Coolie Vs War 2: Rajinikanth-starrer To Dominate Overseas Box Office Against Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR's Spy Actioner
Mumbai, August 6 - The stage is set for one of the biggest box office clashes of the year as superstar Rajinikanth's gangster action drama Coolie gears up to take on Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR's spy action thriller War 2 this Independence Day weekend. Both movies are scheduled to hit the big screen on August 14 in multiple languages.
While both films are carrying tremendous buzz and fanfare, early trends suggest that the Lokesh Kanagaraj's directorial Kollywood blockbuster is poised to dominate the overseas box office, outpacing its Bollywood competitor in pre-sales and audience anticipation across major international territories.
According to early tracking data, Coolie has taken a solid lead in North America, where advance bookings have already crossed the $1 million mark ($1.25 million with 7 days to go), with significant momentum in Gulf countries, Malaysia, Singapore, and the UK, where it has already sold over 20K tickets, as well. Overall, pre-sales of Coolie have crossed $2 million overseas.
The film marks director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s biggest release yet and showcases Rajinikanth in a vintage mass role that seems to have struck a chord with the global Tamil diaspora and general South Indian audience abroad. Meanwhile, War 2 is also showing healthy signs in international markets, but at a comparatively slower pace.
For the North America premiere, the pre-sales are nearing $300K, as the momentum is expected to pick up as the release nears. Other territories are also showing a decent pace. War 2's appeal is strong, especially in Hindi-speaking territories and Telugu belts, due to star power and the franchise value, but Coolie's mass appeal and the Lokesh-Rajinikanth combo seem to be translating better into overseas footfalls.
Industry insiders believe that Coolie could emerge as one of the highest-grossing Tamil films overseas, especially if the early reviews and word-of-mouth remain positive. With a superstar, a hit director, and a solid supporting cast, Coolie has all the ingredients to lead the charge internationally, while War 2 may find its strength more dominantly in the domestic Hindi and Telugu markets.
