Scarlett Johansson Reportedly Asked Disney For $100M Due To Black Widow's Hybrid Release!
Los Angeles, September 9, 2021: Scarlett Johansson, who filed a lawsuit against Disney for releasing "Black Widow" on Disney+ on the same date as theaters, had reportedly asked Disney for $100 million compensation after the company changed their release plans of the superhero movie.
According to The Wall Street Journal (via IGN India), Scarlett Johansson's team reportedly tried to negotiate a deal with Disney for the star to receive $100 million for the movie. "The calculation was based on what the star would receive in a hypothetical global box-office take of $1.2 billion", said the report.
The estimated sum of $1.2 billion was based on Marvel Studios' past theatrical releases before the COVID-19 pandemic, plus Johansson's $20 million starting salary for her titular role in the movie. However, that negotiation didn't take off as Disney never made a counteroffer.
A couple of weeks after "Black Widow" opened in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9, Johansson decided to sue Disney over the alleged breach of the contract, which reportedly assuring her that the movie would be released exclusively in theaters, in which her salary was mostly based on the film's box-office performance.
Disney, however, later responded to Johansson's lawsuit, claiming that the company had "fully complied with Ms. Johansson's contract" and that Black Widow's simultaneous streaming release had actually "significantly enhanced" the star's ability to earn "additional compensation on top of the $20M" she received as her starting salary for Natasha Romanoff's solo outing.
