Mumbai, February 21 - Bollywood has a long-standing tradition of adapting successful films from regional Indian cinema or international markets, often turning them into massive box-office hits. Many of these remakes have not only replicated the success of their originals but surpassed them significantly in terms of India net collection. Here’s a list of the top 10 Bollywood remake movies that earned more than their original counterparts in India net collection.

1. Kabir Singh (2019) – ₹278.24 Crore

Origin: Remake of Arjun Reddy (Telugu, 2017)

Shahid Kapoor’s intense portrayal of a self-destructive surgeon in love made Kabir Singh a cultural phenomenon. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga (who also helmed the original), it earned ₹278.24 crore, dwarfing Arjun Reddy’s ₹51 crore. Its emotional depth and chart-topping music propelled it to the top.

2. Simmba (2018) – ₹240.22 Crore

Origin: Remake of Temper (Telugu, 2015)

Ranveer Singh’s flamboyant cop in Rohit Shetty’s Simmba collected ₹240.22 crore. Adapted from Temper (₹74.3 crore), this remake added Shetty’s signature action-comedy flair and tied it into his cop universe, making it a box-office beast.

3. Drishyam 2 (2022) – ₹239.67 Crore

Origin: Adapted from Drishyam 2 (Malayalam, 2021)

Technically a sequel to Drishyam (2015), itself a remake, Drishyam 2 with Ajay Devgn earned ₹239.67 crore. Based on the Malayalam sequel (₹70 crore globally, India net lower), it’s not a standalone remake but an adaptation of a follow-up story. Its gripping suspense kept audiences hooked.

4. Kick (2014) – ₹231.85 Crore

Origin: Remake of Kick (Telugu, 2009)

Salman Khan’s adrenaline-pumping Kick raked in ₹231.85 crore, far surpassing the Telugu original’s ₹25 crore (approx.). Directed by Sajid Nadiadwala, this tale of a thrill-seeker turned do-gooder became a fan favorite with its larger-than-life action.

5. Baaghi 2 (2018) – ₹165.5 Crore

Origin: Inspired by Kshanam (Telugu, 2016)

Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2 earned ₹165.5 crore, loosely adapting Kshanam (₹11 crore approx.) into an action-packed sequel to Baaghi (2016). While not a direct remake, its core plot of a man searching for a missing child, combined with Shroff’s stunts, made it a hit.

6. Bodyguard (2011) – ₹148.52 Crore

Origin: Remake of Bodyguard (Malayalam, 2010)

Salman Khan’s Bodyguard grossed ₹148.52 crore, a massive leap from the Malayalam original’s ₹10 crore (approx.). The story of a protector falling for his charge was spiced up with Bollywood romance and action, cementing its success.

7. Shaitaan (2024) – ₹148.21 Crore

Origin: Remake of Vash (Gujarati, 2023)

Featuring Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan, Shaitaan earned ₹148.21 crore. This supernatural thriller, adapted from Vash (₹6 crore approx.), turned a regional hit into a pan-Indian sensation with its chilling narrative and star power.

8. Judwaa 2 (2017) – ₹138.55 Crore

Origin: Remake of Judwaa (Hindi, 1997)

Varun Dhawan’s Judwaa 2 collected ₹138.55 crore, rebooting the 1997 Salman Khan classic (₹22.09 crore, unadjusted). This twin-brother comedy got a modern makeover, outgrossing its predecessor’s unadjusted earnings with updated humor.

9. Rowdy Rathore (2012) – ₹133.25 Crore

Origin: Remake of Vikramarkudu (Telugu, 2006)

Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore amassed ₹133.25 crore, adapting Vikramarkudu (₹25 crore). Directed by Prabhu Deva, its mix of action and mass appeal turned this cop-conman story into a crowd-pleaser.

10. Ready (2011) – ₹120.9 Crore

Origin: Remake of Ready (Telugu, 2008)

Salman Khan’s Ready earned ₹120.9 crore, outperforming the Telugu original’s ₹19 crore (approx.). This lighthearted tale of a man aiding his girlfriend’s escape from an unwanted marriage thrived on Khan’s charm and comic timing.

These remakes showcase Bollywood’s knack for amplifying regional or older successes through star power, larger budgets, and mass-appeal elements like action, comedy, and music. Films like Kabir Singh, Kick, and Bodyguard grew exponentially over their originals, often exceeding them by 5–14 times due to wider distribution and celebrity draw. Data from Sacnilk highlights their entry into the 100-crore club, a benchmark of success in Bollywood.
