From Sky Force To Bhooth Bangla: Akshay Kumar Staging A Comeback After A Lean Box Office Phase

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, April 21 - In the post-pandemic era, Akshay Kumar has arguably been the most prolific among the top stars, consistently delivering multiple releases year after year and keeping the release flow going amid the shortage of top stars' films. However, despite this remarkable consistency, one key element was missing during this phase — sustained box office success. In 2021, his long-pending cop drama Sooryavanshi emerged as a major hit despite the clouds of COVID still hovering, and played a crucial role in reviving the theatrical business after the pandemic. Directed by Rohit Shetty, the film emerged as the biggest Bollywood grosser of the year with the worldwide collection of around 300 crore, still the highest for Akshay Kumar in the post-COVID era. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Extended Lean Phase (2022 – Mid 2023) Following Sooryavanshi, when the trade was expecting the momentum of Sooryavanshi to expand, the actor went through a prolonged dry spell. During this period, Akshay had five releases which underperformed, either ending up as a flop or below average. Despite experimenting with different genres, the lack of strong box office returns made this one of the most challenging phases of his career. This dry phase ended with social comedy drama Oh My God - OMG 2 (August 2023), which emerged as a box office hit. The release of OMG 2 brought much-needed relief for the actor as the film performed well and ended Akshay's losing streak by grossing over 200 crores worldwide. However, this success turned out to be short-lived, as consistency still remained elusive. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) After OMG 2, Akshay Kumar faced another phase of box office struggles. While not as prolonged as the earlier slump, it indicated that a full-fledged comeback was still some distance away, as four films were released during this phase that failed to deliver box office results the actor was hoping for. Comeback Phase Begins – Sky Force (January 2025) After a string of underwhelming box office results, the turning point for Akshay came with Sky Force, which marked the beginning of a steady recovery. Though not a clean hit, the film's performance signalled improving audience acceptance and hinted at a shift in Akshay's choices towards more grounded films with mass appeal. Sky Force, despite being in the news for various reasons, grossed around 150 crores and escaped a flop verdict. After this film, the Khiladi Kumar released Kesari Chapter 2, Housefull 5, and Jolly LLB 3, all crossing the 100 crore mark, with HF5 finishing near Sooryavanshi numbers. This is the longest hundred crore streak for Akshay since the health crisis, hinting at the comeback the actor was looking for. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Akshay Kumar's Last Five Films S. No. Movie Total WW GBOC 1 Bhooth Bangla ₹ 106+ Cr (4D)* 2 Jolly LLB 3 ₹ 171.65 Cr 3 Housefull 5 ₹ 288.65 Cr 4 Kesari Chapter 2 ₹ 145 Cr 5 Sky Force ₹ 150 Cr As of April 20, 2026 (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Momentum Builds with Bhooth Bangla (April 2026) The comeback trajectory of Indian cinema's one of the most prolific stars is now gaining strength with director Priyadarshan's Bhooth Bangla. The horror-comedy is on course to emerge as a box office success after topping 100 crores in just 4 days, driven by positive word of mouth. This phase suggests that Akshay Kumar is gradually reclaiming his position as a reliable box-office draw, a role he was known for before the pandemic. What Is Next For Akshay Kumar? Akshay is expected to carry this winning momentum into the next phase of his career. With franchise films like Welcome to the Jungle, Golmaal 5, and Bhagam Bhag 2 in the making, along with Priyadarshan's thriller Haiwaan, the actor is probably in the best phase ever since he came out of the lean period.

Year Ender 2025:The year of Sequels

BY SACNILK

Sequel Report 2025 Filmmakers doubled down on nostalgia this year, bringing back iconic characters and expanding beloved universes. From the high-octane face-off in War 2 to the supernatural hysteria of Stree 2, the box office was dominated by the Part 2 phenomenon. However, the results were a mixed bag of hits and shocking disasters, proving that a franchise tag alone is no longer a guarantee of success. As we wrap up the year, here is the verified collection report and verdict of the 10 sequels of 2025. War 2 Director Ayan Mukerji Cast Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani Hindi Net ₹ 236.55 Cr WW Gross ₹ 364.35 Cr Budget ₹ 400 Cr Verdict Flop A monumental disappointment. Despite the massive hype surrounding the Hrithik vs. Jr NTR face-off, the film collapsed due to negative word-of-mouth and a weak screenplay. With a colossal budget of ₹400 Cr, the collections are disastrous, failing to even cross the lifetime figures of its 2019 predecessor. It proves that mounting a project on scale alone cannot save a film if the content doesn't connect. Housefull 5 Director Tarun Mansukhani Cast Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan Hindi Net ₹ 183.3 Cr WW Gross ₹ 288.58 Cr Budget ₹ 250 Cr Verdict Average A classic case of the budget outgrowing the box office potential. While the cruise ship grandeur pushed the cost to an astronomical ₹250 Cr, the collections (₹183.3 Cr Net) failed to match up, falling significantly short of Housefull 4's ₹210 Cr benchmark. Despite decent family footfalls during the holidays, the massive mounting turned a potential money-spinner into a financial burden, signaling clear franchise fatigue. Jolly LLB 3 Director Subhash Kapoor Cast Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Huma Qureshi Hindi Net ₹ 116.75 Cr WW Gross ₹ 170.8 Cr Budget ₹ 120 Cr Verdict Success A classic example of diminishing ROI. While the much-hyped face-off between Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi helped the film match the net collections of Jolly LLB 2 (₹117 Cr), the economics went for a toss. With the budget skyrocketing 4x from ₹30 Cr to ₹120 Cr, what was once a highly profitable franchise has been reduced to just a Success. It proves that while the audience base remained intact, the massive cost escalation ate into the profit margins. Raid 2 Director Raj Kumar Gupta Cast Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Vaani Kapoor Hindi Net ₹ 173.05 Cr WW Gross ₹ 237 Cr Budget ₹ 120 Cr Verdict Hit Bigger numbers, but smaller margins. While Raid 2 saw a healthy jump in collections (₹173 Cr vs the prequel's ₹103 Cr), it couldn't match the massive profitability of the first part. Raid was a 'Super-Hit' because it earned 3x its lean ₹35 Cr budget. The sequel, burdened by a heavy ₹120 Cr cost, settles for a Hit verdict. It was a commercial success, but not the money-spinner the original was relative to investment. Sitaare Zameen Par Director R.S. Prasanna Cast Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh Hindi Net ₹ 167.3 Cr WW Gross ₹ 267.34 Cr Budget ₹ 122 Cr Verdict Hit A case of High Revenue, Lower ROI. While Sitaare Zameen Par clocked an impressive ₹167.3 Cr (nearly 2.6x the prequel's lifetime), the economics tell a different story. With the budget escalating 10x from ₹12 Cr to ₹122 Cr, the massive profitability of the original is missing. However, given the genre and Aamir's recent track record, crossing ₹267 Cr worldwide makes it a respectable Hit, even if it lacks the Super-Hit status of its low-budget predecessor. De De Pyaar De 2 Director Anshul Sharma Cast Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Rakul Preet Singh Hindi Net ₹ 74 Cr WW Gross ₹ 111.5 Cr Budget ₹ 150 Cr Verdict Below Average A shocking misfire. Sequels are expected to take the franchise forward, but De De Pyaar De 2 took a massive step back. Not only did the collections nosedive from ₹104 Cr (Part 1) to just ₹74 Cr, but the budget ballooned to ₹135 Cr, making theatrical recovery impossible. Son of Sardaar 2 Director Vijay Kumar Arora Cast Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur, Sanjay Dutt Hindi Net ₹ 46.82 Cr WW Gross ₹ 65.75 Cr Budget ₹ 130 Cr Verdict Flop A box office catastrophe. The franchise completely collapsed with this installment. While the original was a Super-Hit with ₹105 Cr Net on a lean ₹40 Cr budget, the sequel saw the budget triple to ₹130 Cr while collections crashed to less than half (₹46.82 Cr). It stands as one of the biggest loss-makers of the year, proving that a 13-year gap is too long to sustain brand recall without strong content. Baaghi 4 Director A. Harsha Cast Tiger Shroff, Sara Ali Khan Hindi Net ₹ 52.1 Cr WW Gross ₹ 77 Cr Budget ₹ 80 Cr Verdict Flop The franchise has officially hit rock bottom. While Baaghi 3 managed ₹96.5 Cr even amidst the onset of the pandemic, Baaghi 4 saw collections crash by nearly 50% to just ₹52.1 Cr. Even with a reduced budget of ₹80 Cr, the film failed to recover its costs theatrically. The repetitive action formula has been completely rejected by the audience. Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 Director Anukalp Goswami Cast Kapil Sharma, Warina Hussain,Tridha Choudhary, Ayesha Khan Hindi Net ₹ 7.20 Cr(As of day 3) WW Gross NA Budget ₹30 Cr Verdict NA Kapil Sharma's return to the big screen witnessed some respite over the weekend. After a slow start, the film saw positive growth on Sunday (₹ 2.85 Cr), taking its 3-day total to ₹ 7.20 Cr. While family audiences stepped out, the numbers still pale in comparison to the record-breaking debut of the first part. The film has gathered some momentum, but it now faces the crucial Monday test to see if it can sustain its run and challenge the lifetime collections of its prequel. Kesari Chapter 2 Director Karan Singh Tyagi Cast Akshay Kumar, Ananya Panday Hindi Net ₹ 92.73 Cr WW Gross ₹ 145 Cr Budget ₹ 150 Cr Verdict Average A failed attempt to capitalize on patriotism. While the original Kesari was a Hit earning ₹155.70 Cr Net on a controlled ₹100 Cr budget, the sequel stumbled significantly. With the production cost escalating to ₹150 Cr, the collections dropped by over 40% (₹92.73 Cr Net). Despite recovering ₹34.25 Cr from overseas markets, the film could not overcome its high budget, ending as a major commercial disappointment. Masti 4 Director Milap Zaveri Cast Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Riteish Deshmukh Hindi Net ₹ 14.9 Cr WW Gross ₹ 19.25 Cr Budget ₹ 40 Cr Verdict Flop The franchise remains stuck in a rut. Masti 4 has virtually mirrored the disastrous performance of its prequel, Great Grand Masti (₹13.72 Cr). With collections stagnating around the ₹15 Cr mark against a ₹40 Cr budget, it confirms that the adult-comedy genre in this format has lost its theatrical appeal. It marks a second consecutive failure for the once-popular series.

Overseas audiences embraced it equally, contributing another ₹171.5 crore. Starring debutant Ahaan Panday alongside Aneet Padda, the film became one of the highest-earning romantic dramas of the decade and a defining success for its fresh-faced leads. Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 3 War 2 Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR ₹364.35 Cr War 2, the much-awaited entry in YRF’s Spy Universe, exploded into cinemas with a massive ₹52 crore Day 1 haul. The first week alone fetched ₹204.25 crore domestically, while its overseas earnings stood at ₹81.75 crore. Mounted on a ₹400 crore budget, the Hrithik Roshan-led spectacle delivered large-scale action and global appeal, becoming a major hit despite its high cost and earning acclaim for its crossover storyline. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 4 Mahavatar Narsimha Voice Cast ₹325.74 Cr Hombale Films’ animated epic Mahavatar Narsimha opened modestly with ₹1.75 crore on Day 1 but grew steadily through strong word-of-mouth, collecting ₹44.75 crore in its opening week and ₹28 crore overseas. Made on a modest ₹15 crore budget, the Ashwin Kumar-directed film became the highest-grossing Indian animated movie ever, surpassing even Disney’s The Lion King (2019) at the Indian box office — an unprecedented feat in Indian animation history. Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 5 Housefull 5 Multiple Leads ₹288.58 Cr The fifth instalment of the popular comedy franchise, Housefull 5, began its run with ₹24 crore on Day 1 and collected ₹127.25 crore in its first week. Overseas, the film fetched ₹70.25 crore. Made at a staggering cost of ₹250 crore, it became India’s most expensive comedy film, releasing across 5000 screens domestically and over 2000 screens overseas. Despite mixed reviews, it proved to be a major crowd-puller and ended with ₹288.58 crore globally. Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 6 Sitaare Zameen Par Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh ₹267.34 Cr Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par started slow at ₹10.7 crore on opening day but grew impressively to ₹88.9 crore in its first week and ₹66.75 crore overseas. With an estimated budget of ₹122 crore, the film sustained excellent word-of-mouth and crossed ₹150 crore net in India by its third week. It went on to surpass the lifetime totals of major titles like Tanu Weds Manu Returns, OMG 2, and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, proving Aamir’s emotional storytelling still strikes a chord with audiences. Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 7 Raid 2 Ajay Devgn, Vaani Kapoor ₹237 Cr Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2 maintained his stronghold on the thriller genre, earning ₹19.25 crore on Day 1 and ₹95.75 crore in its opening week. The overseas collection touched ₹31 crore, bringing its worldwide total past ₹237 crore. Produced on a ₹120 crore budget, the sequel built on the first film’s tension and realism — turning into one of the year’s most profitable mid-budget hits. Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 8 Sikandar Salman Khan, Rashmika Mandanna ₹184.60 Cr Salman Khan’s Sikandar roared into theatres with a ₹26 crore opening, followed by ₹90.25 crore in its first week. Overseas markets contributed another ₹54 crore. With a production cost of around ₹200 crore, the film delivered a solid worldwide total of ₹184.6 crore. Although not a record-breaker, it reaffirmed Salman’s festive box office pull and Rashmika Mandanna’s continued streak as a dependable co-star in big-ticket entertainers. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 9 Jolly LLB 3 Multiple Leads ₹170.8 Cr The courtroom comedy Jolly LLB 3 opened with ₹12.5 crore on Day 1 and secured ₹74 crore in its first week, alongside ₹31.5 crore from overseas markets. Despite being mounted on a ₹160 crore budget, the multi-lead setup and familiar humour drew strong word-of-mouth, eventually pushing the film into the ₹100 crore club and proving the Jolly brand’s consistency with audiences. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Rank Movie Cast (Male / Female Lead) Box Office Collection 10 Sky Force Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan ₹149 Cr Inspired by true events, Sky Force took off with ₹12.25 crore on its opening day and collected ₹86.5 crore by the end of Week 1. Overseas, it brought in ₹14.5 crore. Made on an estimated ₹160 crore budget, the Akshay Kumar and Sara Ali Khan-starrer earned ₹149 crore worldwide. While not among the year’s top grossers, the patriotic action drama found appreciation for its emotional storytelling and grand aerial sequences. As the curtains draw on 2025, it’s clear that Bollywood has bounced back stronger than ever. The year was driven by variety — from mythological grandeur to emotional storytelling, each film found its audience and moment under the spotlight. While Chhaava emerged as the year’s undisputed box office king, movies like Mahavatar Narsimha and Sitaare Zameen Par reminded us that content still reigns supreme. With new faces entering the ₹100 crore club and franchises pushing boundaries, the Hindi film industry’s winning streak seems unstoppable as it heads into 2026.

Top 10 Biggest First Week Grossers of 2025 In Hindi: Rishab Shetty's Kantara Chapter 1 Fifth

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, October 10 - Amid the dominance of outright Bollywood films, a South Indian title has also made a noise as far as the biggest first earners of 2025 in Hindi are concerned. Rishab Shetty's Kantara Chapter 1 has lived up to the expectations to score 100+ crores opening week in the dubbed Hindi version. The film's Hindi version has scored a good first-week collection of 107 crore net, making it the fifth biggest first-week grosser of 2025 in Hindi. The achievement is even more impressive considering it's a dubbed Kannada release competing with some of Bollywood's biggest franchises and star-studded blockbusters. Vicky Kaushal's mega blockbuster Chhaava is the biggest opening week grosser of 2025 in Hindi, with dominating numbers of 219 crore, setting a new benchmark for Hindi films this year. It's followed by Yash Raj Films' unexpected blockbuster Saiyaara, starring debutante Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda, with 173 crores, while Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR's War 2 is third in the list with 150 crores first week. Here are the top 10 biggest first-week net-grossers of 2025 in Hindi - 1. Chhaava – 219.25 crore 2. Saiyaara – 172.75 crore 3. War 2 – 150.40 crore 4. Housefull 5 – 127.25 crore 5. Kantara Chapter 1 – 106.95 crore 6. Raid 2 – 95.75 crore 7. Sitaare Zameen Par – 88.00 crore 8. Sky Force – 86.50 crore 9. Sikandar – 90.25 crore 10. Jolly LLB 3 – 74.00 crore While Chhaava continues to reign supreme with an extraordinary 219+ crore first week, Saiyaara did surprise one and all with a massive opening week. YRF's War 2, though it is the third in the list, largely underperformed considering the massive expectations had from it. Kantara 2 entering the 100 crores club within the first week is a solid result for a dubbed version. With multiple 100 crore openers and even mid-range films showing resilience, 2025 is set to hear for a solid end with a few potential blockbusters lined up to release in the remaining months. Mumbai, October 8 - Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar-led Housefull 5 was released in theatres on June 6, 2025, and did decent business at the box office. Also starring Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, and Nargis Fakri, among others, the film is all set for a World TV premiere on October 11 on the Star Gold India channel. As the movie is gearing up for the television premiere, the Housefull 5 star cast, while promoting the film's TV release, sat for a discussion about what could be the plot for Housefull 6, possibly hinting at the sixth instalment of the blockbuster comedy franchise. In the playful promo, shared by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment on X, Riteish Deshmukh revealed his wild idea for Housefull 6. The actor said he would love to see the comedy franchise turn into a horror-comedy, with a twist — all the girls in the film appearing without make-up! His tongue-in-cheek remark had everyone bursting into laughter. When Akshay Kumar was asked about his take on the theme, he couldn't resist one of his signature witty comebacks. The superstar joked that in his version, all the cast members die and go up, but the title still makes sense because, well — "it remains Housefull!".
