'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Box Office Projection Revealed
Mumbai, April 9 - Benedict Cumberbatch returns as the Master of the Mystic Arts, Stephen Strange, in the Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", scheduled to release on May 6. Set after the events of "WandaVision", and "Spider-Man: No Way Home", in the film, Strange and his allies travel into the multiverse to face a mysterious new adversary.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies have always been the box office bonanza, and "Doctor Strange 2" is no different. It has been one of the most anticipated movies not just in North America but also overseas. What we saw in the recently released "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was just a trailer, "Doctor Strange 2" will present the full picture of the multiverse concept.
The multiverse concept brings endless possibilities packed with surprising twists and unexpected characters, which is the biggest reason behind "Doctor Strange 2's" sky-high global anticipation. When huge anticipation meets with reality, the box office is bound to shoot up and for that, the analysts aren't shying away from setting the bar high for this particular movie.
Box Office Pro has released its first long-range box office projections for this MCU flick and it has put the film in one of the top opening scorers of all-time. Though the numbers could go up or down as the release of the film gets nearer, the company has projected the movie to open between $165 and $205 million at the domestic (North America) box office.
The opening forecast of $165M - $205M would place Multiverse of Madness between the fifth and ninth-highest domestic opening weekend in MCU history. It could even break into the top 5 biggest MCU movies if it opens to a higher projection. The Disney/Marvel flick is projected to finish its domestic run between $400M and $535M gross.
The current top 5 highest domestic openings in the MCU are as follows:
1. Avengers: Endgame - $375M
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home - $260M
3. Avengers: Infinity War - $258M
4. The Avengers - $207M
5. Black Panther - $202M
Meanwhile, the opening weekend projection of "Doctor Strange 2" is already double the actual opening of the original "Doctor Strange" movie, which opened to $85 million in 2017 and went on to gross $232.6 million domestically, as per Box Office Mojo. The movie finished its global run at $677.7 million.
Directed by Sam Raimi, the sequel stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams in prominent roles. The rumors have suggested that the movie will have multiple cameos including Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, and X-Men, among others.
