"Dune - Part 2" was always on the cards the way it ended. However, there were always concerns that a high concept sci-fi film might not attract audiences that would justify multiple movies. But recently, WarnerMedia CEO, Ann Sarnoff had almost confirmed the sequel by saying to Deadline, "Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie, you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that".
Despite all the hints and possibilities of a sequel, "Dune" was still needed to perform at the box office and on HBO Max to get greenlit and it hasn't disappointed at all. Among all Warner Bros. films in 2021, "Dune" has the best start at the box office with $41 million in the 3-day opening weekend in North America.
At the back of strong box office performance, "Dune" also done reasonably well on the streamer, HBO Max, on which, 1.9 million US households watched this movie in the 4-day weekend. At the global box office, Dune has grossed over $220 million so far.
Produced by Legendary Pictures, Dune stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.
