Thalapathy Vijay's 'Ghilli' Re-Release Sees Blockbuster Response
Chennai, April 21 - Thalapathy Vijay's one of the biggest blockbusters, sports action film Ghilli has had a re-release worldwide on April 20 and the response has been the same as it was 20 years ago when the movie opened to houseful boards in theatres.
There has been a dearth of box office successes for Tamil cinema this year, and filmmakers and distributors have been re-releasing older blockbusters to get some sort of outcome. Thalapathy Vijay is easily the biggest name in Tamil cinema and with the re-release of the film, he proved his box office pull once again.
As far as the tracked collection is concerned, Ghilli scored 3.40 crores gross in India, and as per the estimates, it minted a fantastic approximately 7.75 crores gross at the worldwide box office, including around 4.75 crores in India and 3 crores overseas which is higher than most of the new releases featuring bankable stars not just in Tamil but in other languages.
Among the South Indian re-releases, Ghilli had the biggest opening, beating Mahesh Babu's Business Man which scored around 5.25 crores gross worldwide. Jr. NTR's Simhadri is at number 3 with around 4 crores worldwide opening.
In its original box office run back in 2004, Ghilli grossed over 40 crores worldwide (as per Wikipedia) against a budget of around 8 crores and was one of the biggest Indian hits of that year. The movie is expected to stay in theatres for at least a week.
