Thalapathy Vijay's 'Leo' Hits Record Pre-Release Theatrical and Non-Theatrical Business
Chennai, February 26 - The Tamil film industry witnessed one of the best years at the box office in 2022. It was the year that witnessed some of the top Indian grosser coming from Tamil cinema, in the form of "Vikram", "Ponniyin Selvan - 1", and "Beast", among others.
After such a massive year, the Tamil industry is now looking to aim high in 2023 with some of the most-anticipated films at the Pan India level lined up for release. One of the films that are the hottest in the trade is Thalapathy Vijay's gangster drama Leo with director Lokesh Kanagaraj.
"Leo" is arguably the most-anticipated Tamil film of the year. It marks Thalapathy Vijay's second collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj after the blockbuster "Master". Despite not much having been revealed yet about the film, there is already a huge demand for it in the trade.
It was recently revealed that the makers have sold the non-theatrical rights of "Leo" at a record price. Now, according to Pinkvilla, the entire theatrical and non-theatrical rights of the movie have been closed at unheard prices.
The total pre-release business including satellite, digital, music, and theatrical rights of the film is over 400 crores, which is the highest ever for a Tamil title. The worldwide theatrical rights have been locked at approx. 175 crores, including approx. 50 crores for overseas.
Thalapathy Vijay is the only actor to have 5 films with over 60 crores share collection in Tamil Nadu state, and his upcoming movie has been valued at approx. 75 crores. The asking price for Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are approx. 35 crore while the rest of India is pegged at a sum of 15 crores.
The non-theatrical rights of "Leo" have been sold for approx. 240 crores. The digital rights are with Netflix which acquired for approx. 120 crores (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada). Sun TV has bought the satellite rights of T67 for approx. 70 crores, while Sony Music has been announced as the Music Partner and it paid approx. 18 crores for the same. The Hindi dubbed prices are said to be in the range of 30 crores.
"Leo" is produced by Seven Screen Studio. It also stars Trisha Krishnan as the female lead along with Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Priya Anand, and Gautham Menen, among others in key roles. Anirudh is the music director of the movie that is slated to release on October 19, 2023, in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam languages.
