WWE Monday Night Raw, August 21, 2023: Live Coverage
THE Judgment Day-Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn PromoWe start by revisiting last week's Judgment Day and examining the potential issues that arose. Sami Zayn strides towards the ring. Once the crowd's chants and songs for Sami die down, he warmly greets everyone in French, marking the beginning of Raw. Just as Sami is about to continue, THE Judgment Day's entrance interrupts, and they make their way to the ring, encircling Sami from all sides. Sami speaks up, asking a question before they proceed with whatever they have in mind. He says something in French, drawing enthusiastic reactions from the crowd. He questions whether they would really choose to appear here, of all places, without any backup.
Suddenly, Kevin Owens' entrance music blares, and he heads to the ring. Kevin strikes Dom with a punch, causing him to collide with the ringside barrier. He swiftly trips Finn, sending him crashing into the ringside barrier as well. Kevin executes a kick and follows it up with a stunner on Priest. Snatching a microphone, Kevin gazes at THE Judgment Day, with the crowd erupting in chants for him.
Addressing the audience's longing, he mentions that it's been quite a while since he had a match on Raw. Proposing an idea, he suggests that right here, tonight, it could be Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn taking on any two members of THE Judgment Day. Kevin delivers a line in French, altering the tone and dynamics of the moment.
Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods Vs Matt Riddle and Drew McIntyre
The action commences with Woods and Riddle taking the lead. Woods employs a side headlock and follows it up with a cheeky pie face. Riddle swings for a clothesline but misses, allowing Woods to counter with a dropkick. Woods then drives a clothesline into the corner and propels Riddle into Kofi's waiting boot. Following this, Woods executes a belly-to-back suplex, setting the stage for Kofi's incoming splash that nearly secures a pinfall. Kofi's attempt at a belly-to-back suplex is thwarted as he nimbly lands on his feet, subsequently unleashing a well-placed dropkick.
At this point, Drew enters the fray. Kofi employs a side headlock coupled with a crisp dropkick. Taking advantage of the corner, Kofi lands a forearm, but Drew promptly counters with an Irish whip. Demonstrating agility, Kofi leaps off the turnbuckles, only to be ensnared by Drew, who executes an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Not stopping there, Drew repeats the move on Woods. Riddle playfully embraces Drew, who seizes Riddle and effortlessly tosses him over the top rope with a belly-to-belly suplex.
We've returned to the action, and Kofi inches close to securing a pinfall. Riddle employs a double wrist lock that transitions into a waist lock. To thwart Riddle's attempt at a tag, Kofi executes a side Russian leg sweep. Following this, Kofi employs a snap mare followed by a chest-kicking strike. Woods joins the fray with a sliding clothesline, setting up Kofi's springboard splash. Woods follows up with an elbow drop, coming close to a pinfall. He ensnares Riddle with an arm bar and lands an elbow across the bridge of Riddle's nose. Riddle retaliates with a series of strikes, but Woods anticipates a kick and adeptly avoids an enzuguigiri. Woods then executes a sliding DDT, prompting Kofi to tag in. Kofi launches into Shadows Over Hell, nearly clinching a victory. Kofi subsequently applies an arm bar. Scaling the turnbuckles, Kofi readies for a high-risk move, but Riddle counters with a jumping knee as Kofi descends. Woods reenters the ring, delivering an elbow drop to Riddle's back, thwarting his tag attempt.
Riddle dishes out chops to Woods while positioned on the turnbuckles. Setting up for a superplex, Riddle executes a fisherman's superplex. However, as Riddle crawls towards his corner, Woods grabs his ankle. Riddle retaliates with a series of kicks, and Erik intervenes by pulling Drew off the apron. Seizing the opportunity, Kofi tags in and leaps over Riddle, connecting with Trouble in Paradise to secure the three-count victory.
WINNERS: Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods
Erik and Ivar launch an attack on Kofi and Woods after the match concludes. Ivar delivers a powerful spin kick to Kofi, knocking him down. Drew retaliates with a headbutt against Erik, but Ivar counters with a kick aimed at Drew. We shift focus to Chad Gable's triumph over Giovanni Vinci and Gunther's ensuing reaction. Gunther declares that the world will bear witness to the glory of the greatest Intercontinental Champion ever. Chad, on the other hand, believes time is on Gunther's side, but in reality, it's his ally. Every passing day only adds to his legacy. Gunther won't establish his name at Chad's expense; Chad assures that Gunther's fairy tale ends tonight. Chad Gable stands alongside Otis and Maxxine. Byron Saxton appears, directing a question to Chad.
Otis chimes in, acknowledging Chad's role in lifting him from his lowest career point to becoming a tag team champion. Tonight presents a golden opportunity for Chad. Maxxine shares her perspective, admitting she never anticipated becoming a ring performer, but Chad demonstrated her potential. If anyone can accomplish the seemingly impossible, it's Chad Gable. Chad adds a final note, expressing his gratitude with a simple yet profound "THANK YOU."
Chad Gable Vs Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship
They grapple, and Gunther drives Gable into the corner but comes up short with a chop. Gable responds with a chop of his own. Gunther applies a wrist lock, bringing Gable down to the mat and following it up with a knee drop on the arm. Cody makes it clear that he holds no affection for THE Judgment Day, and he intends to watch closely.
