Michael Outpaces Project Hail Mary By Nearly 70% On Day 1; Musical Biopic Takes Significant Lead At The Indian Box Office

The King of Pop has officially taken the lead over the stars at the Indian box office. On Day 1, the musical biopic Michael delivered a superior performance compared to the sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary, out-earning it in both national cinema chains and total domestic net collections. This decisive start highlights the massive draw of Michael Jackson's legacy, allowing the film to set a significant new benchmark for the musical biopic genre in the country.

Michael opened its account with a solid Day 1 net collection of ₹3.80 crore, supported by a wide release across 3,029 shows. When combined with its Day 0 preview earnings of ₹1.70 crore, the film's total India net collection currently stands at ₹5.50 crore. This compares very favorably to its competitor, Project Hail Mary, which managed to collect a net of ₹2.25 crore on its opening day from 1,324 shows. While the sci-fi film had a respectable start, it was clearly outscaled by the massive reach and show-count of the biopic, which had already established a historic lead through its record-breaking advance sales.

The gap between the two releases is equally evident in the performance within national cinema chains (PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis). Michael sold approximately 45,000 tickets for its opening day in these chains, resulting in a gross of roughly ₹2.00 crore. In contrast, Project Hail Mary, which had shifted its release date to avoid a clash with the domestic giant Dhurandhar 2, sold around 30,000 tickets in the national chains for a gross of ₹1.15 crore. Michael's ability to pull ahead by nearly 40 percent in the premium urban centers highlights its massive popularity as a global event film.

Project Hail Mary1,324₹ 2.25 Cr₹ 2.25 Cr

Looking at the trajectory, Michael is currently trending at an elite level for Hollywood releases in India. Having secured over 1.10 lakh ticket sales for its opening weekend through advance bookings alone, it has comfortably shattered the records of genre predecessors like Bohemian Rhapsody and Elvis. The film now ranks as the fourth-highest Hollywood film in terms of all-time advance sales in the country, trailing only the massive trio of Avengers: Endgame, Oppenheimer, and Barbie. This momentum suggests that the film is headed for a lucrative full run, provided the weekend holds remain steady.

Looking back at the journey of Project Hail Mary, the sci-fi epic has now completed a full month at the box office following its release on March 26. While Michael has taken the lead on a day-to-day basis this week, Project Hail Mary has already cemented its status as a massive global phenomenon. In the Indian market, the film has managed to rake in a total net collection of approximately ₹66.89 crore, with the English version dominating the charts by contributing over ₹63 crore. The dubbed versions saw a more limited response, with the Hindi version bringing in nearly ₹2.50 crore, while the Tamil and Telugu markets combined for just under ₹1 crore.

Despite entering its fifth week, the film continues to show respectable resilience in premium urban centers. For its performance today on April 25, the film has secured nearly 11,000(As of 3 pm) ticket sales across the national chains of PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, resulting in a gross of approximately ₹38.00 lakh . On a global scale, the film has reached stratospheric heights, with the total worldwide gross standing at a staggering ₹5,400.84 crore. While the King of Pop biopic Michael is now the primary driver for current theatrical footfalls

Akshay Kumar's Welcome To The Jungle Advance Booking Update Revealed, But No Confirmation For Paid Previews

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Mumbai, June 21 - After the back-to-back box office successes, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is gearing up for his next potential big hit, Welcome To The Jungle. The comedy entertainer is generating strong excitement ahead of its theatrical release, with the makers now planning a special paid preview strategy to boost early momentum at the box office. According to the Pinkvilla report, the film will have paid preview shows on June 25, one day before its official release on June 26, 2026. The strategy, though not a regular practice, has become increasingly popular in Bollywood, as it helps films create early word-of-mouth and build strong opening-day collections. Considering the popularity of the Welcome franchise, the paid previews could work in the film's favour. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Paid Previews Strategy, But No Confirmation While there is nothing official from the makers yet, it is said that they are targeting family audiences and fans of mass entertainers through these preview shows. Positive audience reactions from the early screenings could significantly improve the film's opening weekend performance. The film marks the third instalment in the successful Welcome franchise and promises a complete package of comedy, action, confusion, and entertainment. Akshay Kumar's last release, Bhooth Bangla, also had previews, and it did very well in those by grossing over 4 crores and setting the stage for a successful theatrical run. The makers of Welcome 3 aim to replicate a similar trajectory, and if it manages to get a positive reception from paid shows, the movie has enough star power and franchise potential to make it a huge box office success. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Advance Booking Update Meanwhile, the makers have officially confirmed that the full-fledged advance booking for Welcome To The Jungle is set to begin on Tuesday (June 23), 3 days ahead of the full-fledged theatrical release across major ticket-booking platforms. Even before the official bookings open, the film has witnessed impressive online interest, indicating strong anticipation among audiences. As per the latest trade projections, Welcome 3 is expected to take a very good start at the domestic box office. With paid previews, strong pre-release buzz, and a star-studded cast, the movie is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Bollywood releases of 2026. All eyes are now on the booking response and whether the film can translate its online hype into massive box office numbers. Akshay headlines the film alongside a massive ensemble cast that includes Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Arshad Warsi, Jacqueline Fernandez, Disha Patani, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, and several other actors. The trailer and promotional content have already created strong social media buzz, with fans particularly excited to see Akshay Kumar returning to the comedy genre on a large scale.

Pawan Kalyan's OG 2 To Undergo Major Creative Changes

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Hyderabad, June 22 - In a major update, powerstar Pawan Kalyan's much-awaited sequel They Call Him OG 2 has been confirmed and is likely to go on floors sooner than expected. The sequel was confirmed after the almost 300 crore worldwide success of the first film; however, the uncertainty over the second instalment was looming large due to PK's busy political schedules. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) According to the latest Telugu media reports, OG might start rolling by this year itself if all goes well; however, not before major production changes. Despite the impressive box office numbers, the film failed to meet the massive targets the makers had hoped for due to its high production and distribution costs. Now, reports indicate that OG 2 will be produced by Pawan Kalyan in association with People Media Factory, replacing the original production setup led by DVV Entertainments. The development is said to come after alleged disagreements between director Sujeeth and producer DVV Danayya over budget overruns during the making of OG. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Reports claim that director Sujeeth had initially planned to begin work on OG 2 after completing Nani's Bloody Romeo. However, with delays surrounding the actor's The Paradise, the director is now reportedly expected to prioritise the sequel first. Interestingly, Pawan Kalyan is also said to be actively participating in script discussions for OG 2. The makers had earlier hinted at expanding the OG Universe with future sequels and prequels, and the actor's direct involvement could play a crucial role in shaping the franchise moving forward. With Pawan Kalyan potentially taking charge as producer, industry insiders believe the sequel could benefit from tighter creative control and smoother production planning. An official announcement regarding the complete cast, crew, and shooting schedule is expected soon.

Cocktail 2 Box Office: The Rom-Com Sequel Clocked A Good Weekend But Big Challenges Lie Ahead

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Mumbai, June 22 - Director Homi Adajania's Cocktail 2 has managed to deliver the kind of opening weekend Bollywood's rom-com genre has been desperately waiting for. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna, the spiritual sequel opened well and continued to hold well across its first three days. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Produced by Maddock Films and Luv Films, Cocktail 2 grossed an estimated 57 crores (47.50 crore net) over its 3-day opening weekend. The sequel showed healthy growth through Saturday and Sunday, indicating that audience reception is leaning towards the positive side. After a promising start on Friday, the film managed to build momentum over the weekend, which is always a crucial sign for urban multiplex-driven films. The weekend trajectory will come as a major relief for the makers, especially considering how difficult the theatrical market has become for Bollywood rom-coms in recent years. Positive word of mouth appears to be helping the film, with younger audiences responding well to the music, glamour, and relationship drama. The strong weekend growth suggests that the film has managed to click with its target audience, at least during the initial phase of its run. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) However, the real challenge for Cocktail 2 begins now as the film enters its crucial weekday period. The movie effectively has only one week of open run before Akshay Kumar's Welcome To The Jungle arrives in cinemas next week. That makes the Monday hold and weekday sustainability extremely important. A healthy trend through the weekdays could place the film in a comfortable position heading into its second weekend, but any major drop could quickly change the narrative. The situation becomes even more complicated because an unexpected box office rebound is currently happening in the form of Imtiaz Ali's Main Vaapas Aaunga. The period romantic drama appears to be staging a strong comeback after witnessing massive growth over its second weekend. Theatre reaction clips from the film are going viral across social media platforms, which is significantly boosting awareness and spreading word of mouth among family audiences. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Despite the crowded release period, Main Vaapas Aaunga has managed to grab audience attention in a big way, and that could emerge as a genuine concern for Cocktail 2 over the coming days, as the former is completely aligning with every age group, while the sequel is mainly targeting the younger audiences. Both films are operating within the broader romantic drama space, and if the Imtiaz Ali directorial continues attracting family audiences in large numbers, it could impact the sequel's weekday and second-weekend business. For now, Cocktail 2 has done its job over the opening weekend with a solid 57 crore domestic gross and over 70 crores worldwide amid an encouraging audience response. But with competition intensifying and major releases arriving soon, the film now needs exceptional weekday stability to emerge as a clear box office success.

Peddi Day 16 Box Office: Collection Slumps to Rs. 2.00 Cr Gross as Film Struggles to Find Takers Outside Telugu States

BY CHRISTA LINCY

Peddi completed its 16th day at the box office with an India gross collection of 2.00 Cr on its third Friday. This brings the total domestic gross to a solid 272.05 Cr. If you have been following the journey of this movie, you will notice that after a massive start, it is now entering a phase where regional loyalty is keeping the wheels turning. The movie is now entering a more stable phase after its high-octane opening weeks, with the latest daily gross reflecting a 12.5 percent decline from the previous day. While a dip is expected on a weekday, the consistency in the Telugu states remains the main highlight. The international circuit tells a much different story than the domestic one. On its 16th day, the film managed to add only 0.05 Cr from overseas markets, bringing the total international gross to 52.60 Cr. Despite the overall worldwide gross reaching 324.65 Cr, the overseas run remains a major disappointment. As we have tracked in previous reports, the film has failed to gain any real traction outside India and is now certain to end its international run as a flop, far from reaching the breakeven point. While the Indian audience gave the movie a strong run, the weak global reception has clearly impacted its final worldwide standing. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The state-wise gross breakdown for Day 16 further confirms that the film is primarily resonating with its home audience. Out of the ₹2.00 Cr total gross on Friday, the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (APTG) region contributed a lion's share of ₹1.75 Cr. In contrast, the rest of India combined for about ₹0.09 Cr, while Karnataka added ₹0.15 Cr and Tamil Nadu contributed just ₹0.01 Cr. It appears that the movie has struggled to maintain its grip on non-Telugu markets, which is also reflected in the language-wise net. On Friday, the Telugu version netted ₹1.60 Cr across 2,418 shows, while the Hindi version managed ₹0.10 Cr from 542 shows. Kannada and Tamil versions together added about ₹0.05 Cr net from their respective show counts. Occupancy rates tell a similar story of steady but limited interest. On Day 16, the overall occupancy for the Telugu version was around 16.31 percent, with the afternoon and night shows performing better at approximately 17.7 percent. Regionally, Vizag-Visakhapatnam stood out with a healthy 30.3 percent overall occupancy, while Hyderabad and Vijayawada stayed in the 15 to 17 percent range. Bengaluru, however, saw a lower occupancy of just 8.0 percent. The BookMyShow data shows that 22.68K tickets were booked on the third Friday, bringing the total life-to-date ticket sales on the platform to an impressive 37,59,200 tickets. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Looking at the live tracking for today, Day 17, there is a visible improvement in footfalls compared to Friday. In the major national chains—PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis—the film has already sold over 2,800 tickets for Saturday. This is a significant jump when compared to over 1,400 tickets sold across these same chains on Day 16. To be more precise, these tickets have generated a gross of approximately ₹3.30 Lakhs from 330 shows, with an average occupancy of about 2 percent. While these figures are modest in the grand scheme, the fact that the ticket sales have nearly doubled early in the day is a clear indicator of a weekend surge. The morning occupancy for the Telugu version has also seen a positive shift, touching 14.36 percent, which is a step up from the previous morning. Although the movie has clearly entered a slower phase of its theatrical run, this uptick in Saturday momentum suggests that we might see a healthy growth in collections by tonight. If the evening and night shows maintain this trajectory, the third weekend could provide a much-needed boost to the domestic total before the weekdays begin again.
