Godzilla vs. Kong Takes The Best Opening During Pandemic In The USA
Godzilla vs. Kong debuted in the domestic market (USA) on March 31st on HBO Max and theaters simultaneously, almost after a week of its international release. The movie was surrounded with solid buzz, and it turned out to be true as Godzilla vs. Kong roared with a $9.6 million opening, according to Deadline.
Since mid-March 2020, when theaters closed in the USA, and slowly returned in late August, no other film has done this type of business. Even though people can watch this monster film at home on Warner Media's streaming service HBO Max for the next 30 days and theaters are also not allowed to operate at full capacity.
According to local surveys, the 5-days opening weekend collection of Godzilla vs. Kong is projected between $25 M and $30 M. And it should easily be achieved after the response it got on an opening day.
Prior to Godzilla vs. Kong, it was Warner Bros' Wonder Woman 1984 that held the best first-day opening title during the pandemic, with $7.5 million on December 25 in the domestic market. Wonder Woman 1984 also released simultaneously on HBO Max and theaters in December last year.
