Box Office: 'Despicable Me'/'Minions' Becomes The First Animated Film Franchise To Reach $5 Billion Globally

Mumbai, July 15 - Universal Pictures/Illumination's Despicable Me/Minions becomes the first animated film franchise to reach $5 billion at the worldwide box office after the latest blockbuster Despicable Me 4 crossed $440 million. ## The Despicable Me franchise has 6 films so far, including the two prequel Minions movies (Minions, and Minions: The Rise of Gru). These 6 films have combined grossed $5+ billion, making it the first animated franchise to reach the milestone, according to Deadline. It was, however, already the highest-grossing animated franchise.## Minions (2015) is the highest-grossing film in the franchise so far with a worldwide gross collection of $1.15 billion, followed by Despicable Me 3 (2017) with $1.03 billion, Despicable Me 2 (2013) with $971 million, Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) with $940 million, Despicable Me (2010) with $543 million, and Despicable Me 4 (2024) is currently at the last spot with $441 million. ## News of the $5 billion achievement comes as Universal last week dated Minions 3 for release on June 30, 2027. Universal Pictures Tops $3B At The Worldwide Box Office In 2022; First Studio To Reach Milestone Since 2019

Los Angeles, August 15 - The Hollywood box office is on the rise and Universal Pictures is leading it by producing blockbusters after blockbusters. In the major achievement, Universal Studio has crossed $3 billion at the worldwide box office in 2022, the first studio to reach the milestone since Disney in 2019.## According to Deadline, the studio has scored $1.74B at the international box office and $1.28B domestically (North America) this year. This is the eighth time Universal has topped the $3B box office mark worldwide. Jurassic World Dominion is leading the chart for the studio with $975 million ($605M overseas/$373.1M domestic) so far. It has set its eyes on touching the $1 billion mark in the coming days. ## "Jurassic World Dominion" is the 5th highest-grossing film (without exchange rates) for Universal at the domestic box office while worldwide, it ranks 8th for the studio. In 2022, the Chris Pratt-starrer is the second biggest-grossing Hollywood movie worldwide, after Paramount Pictures' "Top Gun Maverick" ($1.4B).## The second biggest film this year for the studio is Minions: The Rise of Gru, which has so far grossed $790.4M globally, including $446.7M overseas and $343.7M from domestic. It is already the biggest animated film during the covid-19 pandemic era. 'Minions: Rise of Gru' Smashes Box Office Records In North America

Los Angeles, July 3 - Universal/Illumination's Minions: Rise of Gru is putting up a big show at the box office, and has surprised the Hollywood trade experts. ## The sequel to the spin-off prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise "Minions: Rise of Gru" scored a gigantic $108.5 million in the first three days as the long July 4th holiday weekend heads for a massive $128 million at the North American box office, as per The Hollywood Reporter. ## The $128 million July 4th weekend of Minions is way ahead of Industry's projection which was around $80 million. While the 4-days total of the film is by far the biggest for an animated movie during the covid-19 pandemic, it is also one of the top starts ever at the domestic box office for an animated Hollywood title. ## At the international box office, "Minions: Rise of Gru" scored a huge $94 million through Sunday, pushing the global cume to $202 million, including a $108 million domestic opening weekend. ## The Hollywood industry is seeing Minions' box office performance differently. The movie has confirmed that parents and younger kids are ready to return to the multiplex in droves, overcoming their covid fear which was holding them back before.
