Los Angeles, March 22 - Ryan Gosling's sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary has delivered a powerful start at the global box office, debuting to a record $141 million worldwide opening for Amazon MGM Studios. In just its first week, the film is already nearing the $150 million mark globally. The film exceeded expectations overseas, pulling in $60.4 million across 82 international markets over a 5-day weekend, well above initial projections of $40–45 million, making it the biggest international opening ever for Amazon MGM. The movie is yet to be released in 8 more markets. Domestically (North America), the film posted a solid $80.6 million 3-day opening weekend, combining with overseas earnings to deliver one of the strongest starts for an original film in recent times. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and based on the novel by Andy Weir, the film's performance is being driven by strong word-of-mouth and premium format screenings. Mounted on a reported $190 million production budget, Project Hail Mary has opened not far behind recent blockbuster debuts like Dune: Part Two ($182.5M) and Oppenheimer ($180.5M).
