Farhan Akhtar is set to make his Hollywood feature film debut in Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes' ambitious four-part biopic of the legendary band, The Beatles. According to a report by Variety, the versatile Indian actor, filmmaker, and singer has been cast to portray the legendary Indian classical musician and Bharat Ratna awardee, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Sony Pictures confirmed the development on Thursday, unveiling a star-studded ensemble cast for this biographical musical drama. While Farhan Akhtar was previously seen in a guest role in the Marvel series Ms. Marvel (2022), this project marks his first major appearance in a global cinematic event of this scale. Directed by Sam Mendes, known for masterpieces like Skyfall and 1917, the project is designed as a unique four-film series. Each installment will tell the story of the band from the perspective of a different member—Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The films aim to challenge traditional biopic formats by showing how the four distinct viewpoints converged to create the most iconic band in history. The lineup also features Morfydd Clark , Harry Lawtey , and Aimee Lou Wood . Mendes expressed his honor in narrating the story of the greatest rock band of all time, emphasizing his excitement to explore a new style of theatrical storytelling. The screenplay for the series is being penned by a talented writing team including Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne. Produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment in collaboration with Neal Street Productions and Apple Corps, all four films are expected to wrap filming by the end of 2026. Given the extensive post-production required for a musical event of this magnitude, this quartet of movies is positioned as one of the most anticipated theatrical releases of the late 2020s.

Jack Ma, Chinese billionaire, and Alibaba co-founder, who is rumored to have gone missing for the last two months, has been a massive source of financial support for Hollywood films for the last 5 years. Alibaba Pictures, which was set up by Jack Ma's e-commerce giant Alibaba, has given a marketing push to Chinese films as well as invested in films of that country. ## Apart from investing in Chinese films, Ma also stepped into Hollywood in 2015, and one of the most successful films his company has produced is the 2019 release war movie "1917". The Sam Mendes triple-Oscar winner that also has Reliance Entertainment and Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks Pictures as producers, made $368 million on a $95 million budget. ## Other than 1917, one of the biggest films in which Alibaba Pictures invested is also the 2015's Tom Cruise-starrer "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation". The film was made on a budget of around $150 million and earned a worldwide gross of almost $680 million.## After that in 2016, the company invested in two Paramount Pictures productions, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows" and "Star Trek Beyond". While the superhero film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows" led by Megan Fox grossed $245 million on a budget of around $135 million, the sci-fi adventure "Star Trek Beyond", was made on a budget of $185 million and minted around $340 million worldwide. ## In 2018, Alibaba Pictures produced Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible - Fallout". The film went on to gross $791 million worldwide and it turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the franchise.## That's not all, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter published in 2019, Alibaba Pictures Group had extended a $103 million loan to the Chinese film studio Huayi Brothers Media.## Source - India TV/IANS
