Ek Din arrived in theaters yesterday with a quiet start that failed to reflect the high-profile nature of its production house. Despite being backed by Aamir Khan Productions, the film managed to collect a net of 1.15 crore on its first day across India. This opening is quite low when you consider the scale of the release, which covered 1,961 shows nationwide. The total India gross for the opening Friday stood at 1.37 crore, with a fairly low occupancy of 14.3 percent. The film marks the much-anticipated Hindi debut of Sai Pallavi, starring alongside Junaid Khan in an emotional romantic drama. Directed by Sunil Pandey, Ek Din is a remake of the 2016 Thai hit One Day, focusing on a slow-paced, heartfelt narrative set against the scenic backdrop of Japan. The story follows a man who spends a single day with a woman who has temporary memory loss, trying to make her fall in love with him for just that short duration. The slow and emotional nature of the story simply didn't create enough excitement to attract a big crowd on its first day. What makes these numbers particularly concerning is the lack of momentum despite a very long promotional window. Advance bookings for the film opened a full month before its release, a strategy usually reserved for major blockbusters to build significant pre-release hype. However, this extended lead time did not result in a strong opening. Over the 24-hour period around the release, BookMyShow recorded roughly 14.56K tickets sold, which is a very modest figure for a film featuring established names and a reputable production house. In the national chains including PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, Ek Din grossed approximately 26.70 lakh from about 9,550 tickets. PVR led the contributions with a gross of 14.25 lakh from 4,950 tickets, while INOX and Cinepolis followed with 8.91 lakh and 3.52 lakh respectively. With an occupancy rate of just 4.40 percent in these major chains, it is clear that the film struggled to find its footing even in urban centers where romantic dramas typically perform better. The 1.15 crore opening suggests that the film is struggling to find an audience. This lack of interest was visible long before the release, as the advance booking was open for a full month with very little traction. Between the slow-paced story and the arrival of bigger films like Raja Shivaji and Patriot, the film faced a difficult start from the beginning. Unless there is a major shift in audience interest over the next few days, the movie will likely continue to underperform at the box office.
