Patriot Week 1 Box Office: Record-Breaking Overseas, but Underwhelming Rs. 26.98 Cr Net Misses Top 10 by a 1.24% Margin
Patriot, the high-stakes collaboration bringing together the two titans of Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal and Mammootty, has concluded its first week at the box office. While the film has managed to etch its name into the record books internationally, the domestic performance presents a much more complex and somewhat concerning picture. When a film is mounted on a massive reported budget of 125 Crore, the expectations are naturally sky-high, but the current momentum suggests that the star power of the lead duo is doing the heavy lifting against a tide of mixed audience feedback.
If we look at the internal trend, the film started with a solid 10.00 Crore on its opening Friday, but the slide thereafter has been quite steep. By the time it reached its seventh day, the daily collection dropped to 0.93 Crore, marking a 22.5 percent decline from the previous day. For a project mounted on a massive reported budget of 125 Crore, hitting sub-one-crore levels within the first week is a signal that the theatrical run might be shorter than anticipated. Across its first seven days, the film was screened across a total of 14,445 shows with an average weekly occupancy of 30.7 percent. This brings the total India net collection for the first week to 26.98 Crore, meaning it missed out on the all-time top 10 opening week list by a narrow 1.24 percent margin.
The ticketing data from BookMyShow tells the story of an initial rush that eventually cooled off. The film recorded a total of 928,010 ticket sales for the week, but it is important to note that a massive 333,000 of these were sold during the pre-sales phase alone. Excluding those early bookings, the film sold 595,000 tickets during its active run. This indicates that while the curiosity to see the two legends together was immense, the subsequent word-of-mouth did not translate into a sustained surge in footfalls. Similarly, the performance in national cinema chains resulted in a final total of 69,950 tickets for the week.
Despite the domestic struggle, the international market has provided a massive silver lining. Patriot has officially become Mammootty’s highest-grossing film overseas, surpassing the record previously held by Kalamkaval(₹38.70 Cr). The film earned 41.50 Crore gross internationally in just one week. The Middle East was a major contributor with a 1.2 million dollar opening day, while North America saw a steady weekend total of 334,000 dollars. In Australia and New Zealand, it made history by becoming only the second Malayalam film to ever cross the 100,000 Australian dollar mark on an opening day. By its first Monday in North America, it had already reached a total of 442,000 dollars.

However, when we look at the historical rankings of Malayalam cinema, Patriot narrowly missed a spot in the elite Top 10 opening week collections. It currently sits at the 11th position, having been edged out by Marco by a razor-thin margin of just 34 Lakhs. Given the 125 Crore budget, missing this list highlights the uphill task the film faces in reaching the break-even mark. At the close of Week 1, the total India gross for Patriot stands at 31.30 Crore, with Kerala accounting for the bulk of it at 23.81 Crore. When combined with the record-breaking overseas gross of 41.50 Crore, the worldwide total has reached 72.80 Crore. While the overseas success is a personal milestone for Mammootty and a win for the industry's global footprint, the film will need a miracle of a second weekend to recover its massive investment and find stability in the domestic market.
