Vir Das takes cue from 'desi' stand-ups for 'Hasmukh'

Mumbai, April 16 (IANS) Actor-comedian Vir Das says preparing for his starring role in upcoming show "Hasmukh" was the best part of working in the project.## He "consciously watched" a lot of shows by local stand-up comics to get his character in the Netflix show right.## "A lot of my research had started when I was writing the show. But when I began my prep as an actor, I consciously watched a lot of shows by local stand-up comics," Vir said.## "I had finished 'Jestination Unknown' around the same time so by virtue of that I'd learned that humor is rooted in local styles and culture. There is more banter. The stories are intimate. I used all of that in Hasmukh's set. Watching more and more comics nudged me towards finding the right persona for 'Hasmukh'," he added.## Talking about his character, Vir explained: "He is essentially an introvert and his stage person is a lot more open. I chalked out everything that Hasmukh would want to include in his set, figured a delivery style for him and made it entirely different from what he is off stage. The prep was actually the best part of the show for me. I enjoyed it to bits."## "Hasmukh" is about an ambitious comic on a mission to prove to his mentor that he is a good comedian. It shows how every dream comes with a price and Hasmukh (Vir Das) realizes that the only way to "kill it on stage", is if he "kills off stage".## Also featuring Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Pahwa, Amrita Bagchi, Suhail Nayyar, Inaamulhaq and Raza Murad, "Hasmukh" is directed by Nikhil Gonsalves and will release on April 17. The Netflix show is produced for Applause Entertainment by Emmay Entertainment.## Stay tuned...

'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja' wrong debut for me: Director Satish Kaushik dissects the flop

New Delhi, April 16 (IANS) Twenty-seven years since the release of the Sridevi-Anil Kapoor starrer "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja", director Satish Kaushik opens up on why he thinks the film failed at the Indian box-office.## "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja" hit the screens in 1993, and was widely regarded as one of the most expensive Bollywood films ever upon release. The film marked the directorial debut of Kaushik, who likes to call it his first child. The film also starred Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, and Johnny Lever.## The project released after a spate of delays. It was announced in 1987, around the time the Sridevi-Anil Kapoor superhit "Mr. India" released. It was initially being directed by Shekhar Kapur, who had also called the shots on "Mr. India". However, when Kapur quit the project halfway, Kaushik was roped in.## The delay, for one, was a reason for the film's failure, Kaushik contends.## "It took really long to make the movie. That's one of the reasons. Also, I feel it was the wrong film to attempt as a directorial debut. The first film for any director should be the one that reflects some elements of his or her own personality, beliefs and background to make it seem real and believable," Satish told IANS.## "In layman's terms, I can say that β€˜pant-shirt pehanne waale ladke ne pehli hi film mein tuxedo pehan liya. When I made Hum 'Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain' with Anil and Kajol, it worked because I felt much more at home and could feel the atmosphere and the world of the film. That was my first hit," he added.## He tags the film his firstborn. " 'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja' was my first child and I had my first child, Kush, also soon after the film's release. I lost both the children (his son passed away and the movie flopped), but I am proud of both of them. As I keep remembering Kush, I keep watching the "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja" train robbery scene, keep listening to songs like 'Chandi ka chamcha' and 'Dushman dil ka', and keep remembering Baba (Azmi)'s camera work, Veeru Devgan's action sequences, Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music, and Anil, Sridevi, Jackie, Johnny, Paresh and Anupam's fine performances. I can proudly say that both my first children were awesome and will never go out of my life."## Kaushik talked about his "box-office" earning from the film, which did not fare well.## "Fair well? It didn't work at all. It was a β€˜flop'. But it worked more than brilliantly for me because I earned some amazing friends and family in the form of Boney Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Javed Akhtar Saab, Sridevi madam, Baba Azmi, Bijon, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and Anupam Kher. Films come and go, but the relations that I earned because of 'Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raja' are still there with me. That's my box-office earning from the film," he said.## Having said that, Kaushik is thankful that he got an opportunity to shoot such a big film at the start of his career.## "I was glad that I, Satish Kaushik, a dreamer from Delhi's Karol Bagh, got such a big opportunity right at the beginning of his career to direct the biggest film of that time. Honestly, everyone involved in the film was extremely supportive and we all worked very hard to deliver a blockbuster, but unfortunately, the film was a dud at the box office. While it wasn't a hit back then, it's amazing how it still receives so much love from the viewers when it telecasts on the television," he said.## Would he like to remake the film again and correct what went wrong?## "Many years ago after the release of the film, I checked into a hotel in Chennai and turned on the TV. The moment I switched it on, I was horrified because the movie that was playing was "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja". So, a big no as far as the remake goes. But yes, there are many young directors who want to give it a shot because they feel that the film was a good masala entertainer with great action, comedy and song sequences," he said.## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.

The movie later had its digital release.## "It's crazy and really sad. I really wish that 'Angrezi Medium' would have released a little earlier or little after -- at least, we would have had a proper release. The movie was taken down after one day of release. It is such a beautiful film and Irrfan Khan hasn't done a film in a long time, given his health conditions. It was such an important thing for everyone to see him, and I was really hoping that people would get a chance to see him in theatre," said Kiku.## Apart from Irrfan and Kiku, the Homi Adajania-helmed also features Radhika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal, Ranveer Shorey, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.## "The response of people who have seen the film is great. People have reached out to me on social media platforms and praised the movie. And of course, everyone is talking about the great ensemble cast. Each and every character is being praised, every actor is apt and remarkably good in the role they performed. The chemistry between Irrfan Khan and Deepak Dobriyal was very much appreciated. People are in awe of the story as well. It is such a beautiful story of a father and a daughter, and it is such a positive film," he said.## Kiku also said that Irrfan Khan was the reason he agreed to do the film. "I knew Irrfan Khan was doing the movie and that was reason enough for me to join the ensemble cast. I knew my character and brief, but the selling item was Irrfan Khan. I would get to work with him, share screen space with him, so that was enough for me. I have loved, adored and admired Irrfan Khan's work. Some of his movies are remarkable. So, working with him has been an honor and pleasure for me," he said.## Kiku Sharda is also part of "The Kapil Sharma Show" on Sony TV, portraying various roles including Santosh and Bumper, and his very famous character Baccha Yadav.## Stay tuned...

What scares me is what if I lose out on the confidence to take new challenges. Hopefully, that never happens. I do not want to live a predictable life. Perhaps that is why change does not worry me, stagnancy does. Every change that is happening now is teaching us something. For us actors, vanity, popularity, beauty -- all these things at times hold us back to take risks. That's the only thing I do not want. I do not want the vanity to take away my enthusiasm to take a risk and that joy of acting, the joy of performing!" Sobhita told IANS.## Starting her Bollywood career with Anurag Kashyap's "Raman Raghav 2.0", she has acted in films such as "Kaalakaandi", "Goodachari", and "Moothon". On OTT platforms, she has been seen in the shows "Made In Heaven" and "Bard Of Blood" and the digital film, "Ghost Stories".## Recalling her first-ever audition, she said: "That was my first audition and I bagged the role. That was the moment I realize that I actually love acting! This is my true calling! I did not know it before. Otherwise, I would have directly looked for such an opportunity instead of participating in beauty pageants and modeling. I always had a love for storytelling, it is a sacred thing to me. But I think all is a part of my journey and I learned a lot about makeup, camera, and many things during my modeling days."## Sobhita participated in Miss Earth 2013 and the general assumption could be that she always had an inclination towards acting. However, she says she was quite the "teacher's pet" in school.## "I spent a good amount of time in the library because I loved reading books and was busy earning grades! I was not at all a 'cool kid' in school, so nobody even imagined, including me, that I could be someone in the glamour industry. At the end of my college days, I just thought of participating in a beauty pageant. Since I had to plan and it was just a 'karke dekhte hai, kya hota hai' type attitude, there was a certain innocence, too. Perhaps that is why I am not the 'heroine' type, you know! But I am happy the way my career has panned out so far," Sobhita signed off.## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.

Jasleen Royal: There's a lack of female composers

Mumbai, April 15 (IANS) Music composer, and singer Jasleen Royal points at the fact that there are few female composers in the Indian music industry.## "I want to see more women in key roles in our music industry. I want to see them taking the Indian music scene to a higher level. Today, the situation is better -- more female solo singers have come up, but there is still a lack of female composers. I really want to see that change in the upcoming time," Jasleen told IANS.## Jasleen, who is the voice behind hits such as "Love you Zindagi" ("Dear Zindagi") and "Nachde ne saare" ("Baar Baar Dekho"), had created singles like "Panchhi ho javan", "Mai ni" and "Din shagna da" before stepping into Bollywood. She had also appeared in the first season of the reality TV talent hunt show "India's Got Talent". One the show, she was given the tag of a one-woman band as she is able to collectively play different musical instruments while singing.## On recalling her journey so far and how she carved a niche for herself, Jasleen got emotional.## "I am really grateful for all the opportunities and for the people who gave me work. It's been a long journey. I got a chance to work with Karan Johar sir and Zoya Akhtar ma'm at such an initial stage of my career. That was really something big for me," she said.## Jasleen believes in creating good music and paying less attention to the result. "There were days when I felt like my songs were not working. I started doubting myself. I remember when 'Din shagna' came out, initially it didn't do well. It hardly reached out to the masses. Then, suddenly a few months later when Anushka-Virat got married, the song was playing in the background of their videos and it became viral! It was playing everywhere. I made a jingle for Paytm and it became viral after demonetization. So, I believe one should do their best and not worry much about the result. Everything takes time to flourish," Jasleen added.## Stay tuned...

Lakshya Kochhar: 'Second Hand' explores dichotomy in new-age relationships

Mumbai, April 14 (IANS) Actor Lakshya Kochhar, who is playing an important role in the upcoming short film "Second Hand", says that the story of the film quite realistically shows a modern-day relationship.## Sharing insight into his character, Lakshya said: "The film explores the dichotomy in modern-day relationships through its turbulent journey, dotted with ups and downs. Till what level can you push yourself to make a relationship work? What role does your past play in being the best self in your current relationship? And how do people react when they have no options left in the relationship. Either all in or out?"## The short film is directed by Navjot Gulati and releases on the OTT platform ZEE5 on Wednesday.## Lakshya, who earlier appeared in the Akshay Kumar-starrer "Gold" said that in the upcoming film his character looks very "non-glamourous", and he stopped working out for a while to put on a few kilos to look the part.## He added: "To reach the psyche of the character, it was very important to browse through my own experiences. Insecurities come with love and hence the balance between being possessive and insecure is the thin thread we walk on, to make any relationship work. We live in a very complex world and too many interlinked dynamics are at play. Manoeuvring your relationship through this chaos and surviving the ride can be very challenging. So in that sense, I feel most people will relate to the film and draw something from it."## The short also features Abhishek Banerjee and Parul Gulati.## Stay tuned...
