Box Office: 'Alien: Romulus' Off To $100+ Million Worldwide Opening Weekend
Los Angeles, August 18 - 20th Century Studios' science fiction horror Alien: Romulus off to the global opening of over $100 million, against the production budget of $80 million. This is an excellent start for a movie which was supposed to go directly for digital release before the change in plans.
Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), Romulus opened at number 1 this weekend at the domestic (North America) box office, grossing a strong $41.5 million (350 crores). This is the second biggest opening weekend start in the 7 films Alien franchise.
At the Overseas box office, the Fede Álvarez's directorial collected $66.7 million (560 crores) for the worldwide opening weekend of $108.2 million (910 crores). It opened above industry projection for both domestic and worldwide which was projected at $75 million weekend.
Alien: Romulus is the seventh instalment in the Alien franchise. Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), the movie follows a group of young space colonists who come face to face with a Xenomorph while scavenging a derelict space station.
In India, the movie will be released on August 23.
