Box Office: 'Empuraan' Emerges First 50 Crore Gross Malayalam Opener Worldwide
Kochi, March 26 — The Malayalam film industry is on the verge of joining only four other Indian film industries in scoring a 50 crore opening at the worldwide box office as superstar Mohanlal's highly-anticipated action thriller L2: Empuraan has created history for it.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, Empuraan is all set to storm the box office after scoring sensational advance sales in India and worldwide. The film's opening day pre-sales have crossed 50 crores gross globally, making it the first Mollywood title to do so.
Ever since the advance booking of Empuraan was opened, it has been breaking records with each passing day, and to be able to score more than 2x of the previous biggest Malayalam opener Marakkar (20 crores gross), in pre-sales only, is a remarkable feat no one saw coming.
Previously, Bollywood ("Chennai Express"), Tollywood ("Baahubali"), Kollywood ("Kabali"), and Sandalwood ("KGF 2") were able to score a 50 crore opening. In terms of the size of the industry market, Mollywood is small and that makes Empuraan's opening even more special.
