Box Office: 'PS-1' And 'Kantara' Opening Day Early Estimates

Chennai, September 30 - Maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam's dream project, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 has taken a bombastic start at the domestic box office.

The epic period action drama film, based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name, is touted to be the biggest film in Tamil cinema and has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The movie started on a fantastic note in the morning and it kept improving as the day progressed despite the mixed to positive reviews from critics.



"PS-1" was expected to take a big opening and it has managed to live up to those expectations as early estimates suggest 45-48 crores gross on an opening day for all languages. In Tamil Nadu, the movie scored an estimated 27 crores gross, which is the third highest in 2022 after Thalapathy Vijay's "Beast" and Ajith Kumar's "Valimai". The final number could be higher or lower, which remains to see.

On the other hand, the Kannada movie Kantara, fronted by Rishab Shetty, has taken a very good start at the box office. Produced by Hombale Films, "Kantara" has scored an estimated 4 crores gross on the first day despite the limited number of shows due to other releases.

"Kantara" has been the best movie of the day along with "Vikram Vedha" as far as the critical acclaim is concerned. Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, "Kantara" started on a decent note but showed an incredible jump as the day progressed and as a result, the evening and night shows are going houseful. If the early indication has anything to go by, "Kantara" is on its way to becoming a word-of-mouth sensation.
