Box Office: Vijay Sethupathi's 'Maharaja' Scored Excellent Opening Weekend
Chennai, June 17 - The Tamil film industry has returned to winning ways with a fourth success within two months at the domestic box office. After no-hit for the first four months of the year, the industry scored first hit in horror-comedy Aranmanai 4, followed by Garudan. Now, Vijay Setupathi's Maharaja joins the list.
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja was released on June 14 and scored an excellent first weekend at the domestic box office with approximately 25.15 crores gross mark, which is the second biggest opening weekend for a Tamil movie of 2024, behind Dhanush's Captain Miller.
Maharaja opened to an estimated 5.40 crores gross collection, including 1.20 crores in Telugu. The action thriller witnessed a big jump of over 60% on Saturday to score an estimated 9 crores gross, and there was a further jump of around 20% on Sunday for around 10.75 crores gross.
The Tamil version of Maharaja has minted an estimated 19 crores gross while the Telugu version has grossed approximately 6 crores gross. The movie surpassed expectations after opening to excellent reviews and audience word of mouth.
Maharaja is expected to have another solid day today due to the Bakrid holiday. The momentum is currently with the film which should help to continue doing solid business in the coming days despite the holdover movie, Garudan which is also doing good business domestically.
