Box Office: 'Wicked' Becomes The Highest-Grossing Musical Adaptation In North America
Los Angeles, November 30 - A record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend is ongoing at the North American box office with the top 3 films - Moana 2, Wicked and Gladiator 2 going all out for the big money. Only these three films alone are projected to earn a gigantic over $375+ million over the 5-day weekend.
Meanwhile, amid the Moana 2's monstrous opening, Ariana Grande-Butera and Cynthia Erivo's epic musical fantasy film Wicked has breached a major box office milestone at the domestic box office as it has become the highest-grossing musical adaptation and first to reach $200 million in North America.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked grossed a strong $32 million on its second Friday, pushing total domestic (North America) cume to $214.3 million. It has beaten Grease (1978) which grossed $190 million to become the biggest musical adaptation grosser domestically.
Wicked is projected to finish its run, at least, at $450 million with a chance to go past $500 million at the domestic box office. It is also being seen as a serious Oscar 2025 best picture contender with critics going gaga over it.
