Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' Officially Hits $1 Billion At The Worldwide Box Office
Los Angeles, August 6 - Greta Gerwig creates history by becoming the first female director (solo) to deliver a $1 billion grossing movie as her latest blockbuster, fantasy comedy "Barbie" officially surpassed the box office milestone worldwide.
The Margot Robbie-led movie reached the billion-dollar mark on its third Sunday, becoming only the second movie of the year and 53rd of all time to do so. The last movie to enter this coveted box office club was Universal Pictures' "The Super Mario Bros." which grossed $1.35 billion worldwide earlier this year.
At the domestic (North America) box office, "Barbie" has grossed $459.4 million (INR 3800 crores) while overseas, it has minted a staggering $574.2 million (INR 4750 crores) for a worldwide cume total of $1.03 billion (INR 8515 crores) through the third Sunday.
The top 5 international markets of the movie are as follows - 1. the UK with $87.9M, 2. Mexico with $48.9M, 3. Australia with $41.1M, 4. Brazil with $39.5M, and 5. Germany with $33.7M. In India, the movie has minted approx. $6 million (49.50 crores).
"Barbie" also ended Warner Bros. Pictures' long search for the billion-dollar movie. The last tentpole movie of the studio to reach the mark was the Joaquin Phoenix-led DC film "Joker" which grossed $1.07 billion in 2019. "Barbie" is also the first movie for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling to score $1 billion worldwide.
Based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films. The film follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis.
