Matt Riddle Eyes MMA Comeback As WWE Non-Compete Clause To Set Expire
Stamford, December 20 - Former WWE superstar Matt Riddle is set to become a free agent as his non-compete clause expires this Thursday, marking the end of his tenure with the company since his release in September. Before making a name for himself in the world of professional wrestling, Riddle was a prominent MMA fighter, notably competing in the UFC. With his non-compete clause ending, Riddle has hinted at a potential return to the MMA scene in 2024.
During the MMA Awards, Riddle spoke with MMA Junkie about the possibility of returning to MMA competition. Expressing his interest, Riddle mentioned ongoing discussions with several promotions and stated, "I’ll say this. There’s been a lot of talk. I’ve been talking to a couple of promotions. I don’t want to get into it until it’s official, but I think 2024 is a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage and fight again."
Riddle reflected on his departure from the UFC, stating that he left on a four-fight win streak and a subsequent victory in Titan FC before transitioning to professional wrestling. He expressed the desire to have a proper exit, stating, "I feel like you gotta get beat up to leave... Pro wrestling's awesome but [I] still wanna get beat up. I wanna have my exit."
Despite a history of tension with UFC President Dana White, Riddle remains open to a possible UFC return if the opportunity arises. He acknowledged their past decisions, emphasizing that he doesn't hold a grudge and would be open to doing business if the circumstances are right.
Commenting on the return of CM Punk to WWE, Riddle expressed no surprise, citing the promotion's affinity for profitable opportunities. He drew parallels to his own potential return to MMA, asserting that, like Punk, he could sell tickets and contribute to the business side of the sport.
