UFC 291: Poirier vs. Gaethje 2 Fight Card: Prediction & Preview, Date & Location, Tickets, Poster, Odds, Start Time
UFC 291: Poirier vs. Gaethje 2 is scheduled to unfold on July 29, 2023, within the hallowed walls of the prestigious Delta Center, nestled in the vibrant heart of Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.
The upcoming event will mark the Ultimate Fighting Championship's third visit to Salt Lake City, a city that last played host to UFC 278 in August 2022. The highlight of the show is a lightweight rematch between former interim UFC Lightweight Champions Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, both of whom have also held the prestigious WSOF Lightweight Championship.
The two contenders previously crossed paths at UFC on Fox: Poirier vs. Gaethje in April 2018, where Poirier emerged victorious with a fourth-round TKO. Their epic battle garnered widespread acclaim, earning the distinction of "Fight of the Year" by numerous media outlets.
Originally set to take place at UFC 289, a thrilling welterweight bout featuring former UFC Welterweight Championship challenger Stephen Thompson and Michel Pereira has now been rescheduled for this event after contractual issues prevented its previous occurrence.
In another welterweight showdown, Matthew Semelsberger and Yohan Lainesse were initially slated to face off at the event. However, on July 10, Lainesse was removed from the lineup for undisclosed reasons, leading to his replacement by Uroš Medić.
On the women's flyweight preliminary card, Joanne Wood had been set to square off against Priscila Cachoeira. Nevertheless, Wood withdrew from the bout in mid-July, citing undisclosed reasons. Filling in her place is Miranda Maverick, ready to bring her prowess to the octagon.
A welterweight matchup between Jake Matthews and Miguel Baeza had been secured for the event. However, on July 19, Baeza had to withdraw due to undisclosed reasons. Stepping up as the replacement is Darrius Flowers, a fresh face in the promotion.
Though a bout between former UFC Middleweight Championship challenger Paulo Costa and Ikram Aliskerov was initially on the cards, the promotion decided to alter their matchups. Now, they are slated to face Khamzat Chimaev and Nassourdine Imavov, respectively, at UFC 294 in October.
