Worldwide Box Office Projected To Reach $22B In 2021: Analysts

Mumbai, October 26 - The global box office has witnessed a sharp jump in the second half of 2021, especially from October onwards. Gower Street Analytics, which projected the worldwide box office at $20.2 billion in mid-September, has now revised its projection to be up by over $1 billion to $21.6B in 2021.

The revised global box office projection came after the solid response to October titles including MGM/Eon/Universal's James Bond "No Time To Die" ($525M), Sony/Marvel's "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" ($352M), Warner Bros/Legendary's "Dune" ($223M), and China's "The Battle At Lake Changjin" ($830M). Gower Street further anticipates potential growth and that could take the global box office to around $22B in 2021.

Gower Street's $21.6B projection for the year 2021 is up by 80% from the pandemic hit 2020 but still is 49% behind 2019's global box office tally. The latest estimates, however, narrowed the gap from a previous projection of -52%.

The box office projection for the month of October has been increased to $3.2 billion from an original estimate of $2.5 billion. This would put October business just 4% behind the average of the three pre-pandemic years (2017-2019) for the month. No previous month in 2021 has performed better than 40% behind the three-year average.

Gower Street has projected China to contribute most with a 34% projection in 2021 while, overall, Asia Pacific (APAC) is projected to contribute 52% in the global box office. Domestic (North America) is projected to contribute 22% of the worldwide box office. Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) are projected to finish with 22% while the Latin American box office is projected to contribute 5% of the total box office.

This is the final estimate Gower Street plans to publish for 2021 before actuals are announced in early January.

Stay tuned...

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai First Day Offer provides 50% off for David Dhawan’s final directorial venture starring Varun Dhawan

BY SACNILK

The upcoming romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is already generating significant buzz as it gears up for its theatrical release on June 5. This project holds special emotional value for the industry as it marks the final directorial venture of the legendary David Dhawan, who has officially announced his retirement following this film. Known for his impeccable timing and family-friendly entertainers, Dhawan senior is closing his illustrious career by collaborating once again with his son, Varun Dhawan. The duo has previously delivered successful hits like Main Tera Hero and Judwaa 2, making this father-son reunion one of the most anticipated events of the year. The film follows the story of Jass, played by Varun Dhawan, and Bani, portrayed by Mrunal Thakur. Their five-year marriage faces a breakdown due to clashing priorities over career goals and family planning. The narrative takes a comedic and chaotic turn after their separation when Jass travels abroad and finds new romance with a character played by Pooja Hegde. The plot promises a blend of emotional depth and the signature David Dhawan brand of situational comedy, as Jass finds himself entangled in a web involving his past and present relationships. With an audience-friendly runtime of 2 hours and 16 minutes and a U/A rating from the CBFC, the film is clearly positioned as a clean family entertainer. To ensure a massive turnout on the opening day, the makers have partnered with BookMyShow to provide an attractive incentive for early bird viewers. Under this special First Day Offer, moviegoers can get a flat 50 percent discount of up to 200 rupees on their bookings for the release day. By using the voucher code, users can avail of this benefit provided they book at least two tickets. This offer is valid on a first-come, first-served basis for shows scheduled specifically for June 5. It is a strategic move to pull the family audience into the theaters during the crucial morning and afternoon slots. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) This heavy discounting is expected to have a dual impact on the first-day collections. While the Average Ticket Price might see a slight dip due to the 50 percent off scheme, the volume of footfalls is likely to surge. For a film produced on a controlled budget of 50 to 55 crore rupees, a high occupancy rate on Day 1 is vital for establishing positive word-of-mouth. By making tickets more affordable, the makers are effectively lowering the entry barrier for neutral audiences, which could result in a much stronger opening net collection than initially projected. If the strategy works, the film could see packed houses across major multiplex chains, giving David Dhawan the grand cinematic farewell he deserves. Currently, the film has nearly 70,000 interests on ticketing platforms, which is a positive indicator of audience curiosity. The cast, featuring Varun Dhawan alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, has clearly caught the attention of moviegoers. Given that this is David Dhawan's final project, there is a natural interest in seeing how he wraps up his career in the comedy genre. The main question now is whether the promo code will successfully convert this digital interest into actual footfalls on the opening day. For a mid-budget production, securing high occupancy early on is a key part of the strategy, and this 50 percent discount might be the primary driver for that this Friday.

Bhooth Bangla Day 46: Akshay Kumar starrer earns Rs. 0.50 Cr to stay on track to beat Housefull 5 domestic net records

BY SACNILK

Bhooth Bangla has officially entered its seventh week, and it is honestly quite rare to see a mid-budget horror-comedy showing this kind of endurance at the box office. While most films lose their screen count by the fourth week, this Priyadarshan directorial is still pulling in numbers on its 46th day. On its seventh Monday, the film collected a net of ₹0.50 Cr in India, bringing its total domestic net collection to ₹179.85 Cr. If we look at the trend, the Monday collection saw a drop of about 54.5 percent compared to Sunday net of ₹1.10 Cr. Mind you, for a film in its seventh week, a 50 lakh Monday is a very healthy sign of stability. The film ran across 1,589 shows yesterday, showing that there is still enough audience interest to justify this level of screen presence despite newer competition. Looking at the regional occupancy, the National Capital Region led the way with 11.8 percent, while Lucknow and Ahmedabad followed with 10.8 percent and 9.3 percent respectively. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The most interesting part of this run is how Bhooth Bangla is stacking up against Akshay Kumar's other post-COVID hits. The film is currently chasing the domestic net collection of Housefull 5, which stands at ₹183.38 Cr. With Bhooth Bangla currently at ₹179.85 Cr, the gap is only ₹3.53 Cr. Based on the current pace where the film is adding roughly 50 to 60 lakhs on weekdays and seeing jumps on weekends, it looks like this milestone will be achieved in the next 8 to 10 days, likely by the end of its eighth week. While it might be difficult for the film to beat Housefull 5 in worldwide gross due to the latter's massive overseas pull, Bhooth Bangla is very much on the verge of becoming Akshay Kumar's second-highest domestic net grosser in the post-pandemic era, trailing only behind Sooryavanshi. You can see how the leaderboard looks for Akshay Kumar's recent domestic performers in the table below. Top 5 Akshay Kumar Movies Post-COVID - India Net CollectionMOVIE NAMEINDIA NET COLLECTIONSooryavanshi₹ 195.55 CrHousefull 5₹ 183.38 CrBhooth Bangla₹ 179.85 CrOMG 2₹ 151.16 CrJolly LLB 3₹ 117.50 Cr (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The digital footprint also confirms this steady interest. According to BookMyShow data, the film sold 8.28K tickets on its seventh Monday alone, taking the total tickets booked on the platform to over 33.60 lakhs. This kind of consistent footfall late into its theatrical run is a clear indicator that the horror-comedy genre, combined with the nostalgic Priyadarshan-Akshay duo, has worked its magic with the family audience. Looking at the global numbers, the total India gross collection has now reached ₹213.06 Cr. The overseas markets have contributed a solid ₹53.75 Cr to the total, bringing the worldwide gross to ₹266.81 Cr. With the domestic net collection sitting at ₹179.85 Cr, the film is effectively just a day away from crossing the ₹180 Cr milestone. This run has firmly established Bhooth Bangla as one of the most successful outings for Akshay Kumar in recent years, proving that the horror-comedy genre still has massive pull if the content connects with the ground audience.

Deool Band 2 Day 12 collection of Rs. 2.60 Cr puts the film on the verge of hitting the 50 Cr mark faster than Ved and Baipan Bhari Deva

BY SACNILK

Deool Band 2 has just crossed its second Monday, and the results show a very consistent interest from the Marathi audience. The film's narrative, centered on Swami Samarth's teachings, has successfully resonated with viewers across the state. On its 12th day, the film added a net of ₹2.60 Cr to its tally, taking the total India net collection to ₹46.65 Cr. When we look at the trend, the Day 12 collection represents a 54.8 percent drop from the previous day's net of ₹5.75 Cr. Mind you, a drop of this scale on the second Monday is completely normal for a film that had a massive second weekend. The film operated across 1,981 shows yesterday and maintained an overall occupancy of 30.0 percent. The hold in key Marathi hubs like Pune was particularly strong, where it recorded 35.5 percent occupancy across 404 shows. Mumbai followed with 25.8 percent occupancy, showing that the buzz hasn't dried up in the metropolitan areas either. What is truly fascinating is the pace at which Deool Band 2 is chasing milestones. With a total net of ₹46.65 Cr, the film is now just ₹3.35 Cr away from the coveted 50 crore net mark. Based on the current trend, the film is expected to hit this milestone by Day 14 or at the latest by its 15th day. To put this in context, it is set to become one of the fastest films released only in the Marathi language to achieve this feat. For comparison, the massive hit Baipan Bhari Deva took 17 days to reach the 50 crore mark, while Ved reached it on Day 21. It is currently neck-and-neck with Sairat, which also crossed the line around the 14-day mark. The film has already cemented its legacy by entering the elite list of the highest-grossing Marathi films of all time. Within just 12 days, it has climbed into the top five, surpassing several long-standing records. It currently sits at the fifth spot, but given the current momentum, it won't be surprising if it climbs higher in the coming weeks. You can see how the leaderboard stands currently in the table below. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Top 5 All-Time Marathi Net CollectionsMOVIE NAMEMARATHI NET COLLECTIONSairat₹ 80.97 CrBaipan Bhari Deva₹ 76.00 CrRaja Shivaji₹ 70.00 CrVed₹ 61.00 CrDeool Band 2₹ 46.65 Cr Looking at the broader financial picture, the domestic gross collection has reached ₹54.88 Cr. Since the film is strictly focused on its primary regional market in India, there has been no overseas collection reported so far. This brings the total worldwide gross to the same figure of ₹54.88 Cr, with the domestic market being the sole contributor. It is quite rare for a Marathi-only release to generate this kind of volume across 20,898 shows in such a short period. The focus now shifts to how quickly the film reaches the 50 crore net milestone as it moves through the week. The audience connection with the film's themes has been a steady driver for these figures. If the current trend continues, it stands a good chance of moving further up the all-time Marathi list, potentially closing the gap with movies like Ved and Raja Shivaji.

Karuppu Day 18 Box Office: Earns Rs. 2.76 Cr Gross to Record 2nd Highest 3rd Monday; Beats Amaran and Vikram

BY SACNILK

Karuppu has officially completed eighteen days in theaters, and the latest box office numbers indicate that the film is holding its ground remarkably well. For any big-budget South Indian film, the third week is usually where the steam starts to run out, but this one is proving its longevity by maintaining a very steady flow of footfalls. On Day 18, the film managed to pull in a gross collection of ₹2.76 Cr across India. This brings its total India gross to a massive ₹213.75 Cr, while the total India net collection stands at ₹184.85 Cr. Looking at the collection trend, the Day 18 performance shows a 59.3 percent drop from the previous day net collection of ₹5.90 Cr. A drop on a Monday is quite typical for any big release, but the significant part is the show count. The film managed to pull in its numbers while running across 3,141 shows nationwide. Maintaining this volume of screenings into the third week is a clear indication that the demand is still strong enough to sustain a wide release across all major circuits. Let's break down the regional gross performance for Day 18. Tamil Nadu continues to be the primary engine, contributing a gross of ₹2.10 Cr yesterday. The Andhra Pradesh and Telangana markets also added a decent gross of ₹0.45 Cr. Looking at other southern states, Karnataka contributed ₹0.11 Cr and Kerala added ₹0.09 Cr. This regional spread shows that the film has found a wide audience beyond just its primary market. In terms of occupancy, the Tamil version recorded 21.0 percent, with major hubs like Chennai leading at 27.5 percent and Coimbatore at 24.5 percent. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Looking at the record books, Karuppu has delivered a very strong performance. Its third Monday Tamil net collection is now the second-highest ever in Kollywood history, trailing only behind Jailer. By doing so, it has overtaken the collections of major hits like Vikram and Amaran for the same day. This steady pace is a clear indicator that the word-of-mouth remains positive, helping the film maintain its momentum even as it approaches the end of its third week. Top 5 Kollywood Movies - Highest 3rd Monday Tamil NetMOVIE NAME3RD MONDAY TAMIL NETJailer₹ 2.30 CrKaruppu₹ 2.05 CrVikram₹ 1.82 CrAmaran₹ 1.75 CrPonniyin Selvan - Part 1₹ 1.46 Cr (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The digital footprint remains equally impressive. According to the latest data from BookMyShow, Karuppu sold approximately 27,260 tickets on its third Monday alone. This puts it at the third spot for the highest third-Monday ticket sales on the platform, staying ahead of major blockbusters like Leo. To date, the total tickets booked on the platform have crossed the 43.35 lakh mark, which is a testament to the film's popularity across different audience segments. Looking at the global picture, while the domestic gross collection is final at ₹213.75 Cr, the international numbers are currently coming in as early estimates. The overseas market added approximately ₹0.50 Cr on Day 18, taking the total overseas gross to ₹78.25 Cr so far. This pushes the worldwide gross collection to an early estimate of ₹292.00 Cr. With the film now just 8 crores away from the 300 crore worldwide milestone, it is well on its way to becoming one of the most successful outings for the industry this year. The coming days will be crucial as the film looks to sustain this momentum before new big releases hit the screens.

Peddi Box Office: Ram Charan Starrer's Worldwide Pre-Release Theatrical Business Details and Break-Even Target

BY SACNILK

Hyderabad, June 1 - Superstar Ram Charan's upcoming pan-India entertainer Peddi has turned into one of the biggest pre-release business ventures in Telugu cinema. Directed by Buchi Babu Sana and backed by massive buzz across domestic and overseas markets, the film has secured a huge theatrical valuation even before hitting the big screens. Peddi Gets 220 Crore Pre-Release Theatrical Business According to T2BLive, Peddi has closed its worldwide theatrical business in the 220 crore range, placing it among the highest pre-release deals ever for a Telugu film outside the RRR and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion league. The film has been carrying solid buzz; the business details indicate the same. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) In Telugu states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), the rural sports action drama has reportedly secured 135 crores in business, including 48 crores for the Nizam area. Outside the home market, Peddi's pre-release theatrical business in Karnataka has been valued at 17 crore, while the rest of the domestic market has been valued at 32+ crores, including 25 crores for the Hindi region. At the overseas box office, the makers have locked a 34 crore deal, which is among the highest for a Ram Charan starrer. The total worldwide business of Peddi is said to be around 220 crores, the second-highest (solo) for the RRR star, after Game Changer. Huge Break-Even Challenge (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) With such a massive valuation, Peddi faces a huge box office target. To break even and emerge as a box office hit, the film needs to gross around 450 crores worldwide, which will make it Ram Charan's biggest solo grosser and second biggest overall after RRR, if it achieves the target. Distributors are banking on strong openings, premium pricing, and sustained audience reception to recover the investment comfortably. Also starring Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jagapathi Babu, with music composed by A. R. Rahman, Peddi is scheduled for a grand worldwide release on June 4, 2026. Trade analysts expect the film to register one of the biggest openings of the year and potentially challenge several existing Telugu box office records.

Raja Shivaji 5th Weekend Box Office: Nets Rs. 1.42 Cr; Becomes The First Marathi Film to Enter 25 Cr Hindi Net Club

BY SACNILK

Raja Shivaji continues to maintain a steady presence in theaters as it moves through its fifth week of release. For a historical biopic that has already secured its position as a major commercial success, the fact that it is still drawing audiences after a month speaks to the long-term interest in the subject matter. The film offers a grounded portrayal of the iconic ruler, and the Marathi audience has consistently supported the project across both urban and rural centers. While the initial frenzy has naturally slowed down, the current numbers indicate a stable run during the weekends. The performance over the fifth weekend showed a healthy growth trend from Friday to Sunday. On Friday, or Day 29, the movie collected a gross of 0.32 Cr with an overall occupancy of 14 percent across 536 shows. Saturday saw a significant jump in audience turnout, with the gross reaching 0.58 Cr and occupancy rising to 20.4 percent. Sunday recorded the highest collection of the week at 0.68 Cr gross from 527 shows, with occupancy peaking at 24.8 percent. This brought the fifth weekend total gross to approximately 1.58 Cr, which is a respectable figure for a film at this stage of its theatrical life. Ticketing activity on digital platforms remains active, with BookMyShow recording 7.54K tickets on Friday, 11.91K on Saturday, and 10.48K on Sunday. This brings the cumulative tickets sold on the platform to over 25.91 Lakh. In national chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, the film managed to sell over 2,300 tickets during the weekend. These steady sales numbers across 90,279 lifetime shows indicate that the film is effectively utilizing its limited show count to maintain a consistent revenue stream. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The cumulative collections highlight how well the film has performed across different markets. Marathi remains the leading contributor with a total gross of 82.66 Cr and a net of 70.02 Cr. The Hindi version has also found its own audience, contributing 29.71 Cr gross and 25.15 Cr net. Having already established itself as the highest-grossing Marathi film some time ago, these additional collections further strengthen its record-breaking status. The overseas market has contributed 4.27 Cr gross, which, when added to the domestic total, brings the worldwide gross collection to a significant milestone. Obsession Box Office: Curry Barker's Psychological Horror Scored A Good Opening Weekend In India

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, June 1 - Director Curry Barker's psychological horror thriller Obsession has emerged as one of the biggest surprise successes of 2026, and the film is now making its presence felt in India as well. After a sensational run in North America and several international markets, the low-budget horror film has registered a solid opening weekend at the Indian box office. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) After taking a decent opening of 2.10 crores gross (including previews), Obsession witnessed a solid growth over Saturday and Sunday to score 9.30 crores gross opening weekend. This makes it one of the biggest weekends for a horror title in India, amid the ever growing intrest for the genre among the audiences. The weekend trend has been positive, which indicates a long run for Obsession. What makes the performance particularly noteworthy is that Obsession is an original, non-franchise horror film with no major stars attached to it. The movie has benefited from positive word-of-mouth, strong social media buzz, and curiosity surrounding filmmaker Curry Barker, who transitioned from YouTube content creation to directing a theatrical feature. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Globally, Obsession has become one of the most profitable films of the year. Produced on a budget reportedly under $1 million, the horror thriller has already grossed the $148 million worldwide, including $105 million domestically (North America) through its third weekend. It is one of the rare films to witness a growth in the third weekend, both in North America and overseas, continuing to climb new highs. The film stars Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette and follows a disturbing supernatural tale involving a young man whose wish for his longtime crush's affection unleashes terrifying consequences. Critics and audiences have responded positively to the film's psychological horror elements and suspense-driven storytelling.

Blast Opening Weekend Box Office: Worldwide Gross Hits Rs. 21.58 Cr; Sunday Gross Nearly 5X of Opening Day

BY SACNILK

The first weekend for the movie Blast shows how strong word-of-mouth can completely shift a film's box office trajectory. What started as a modest release has quickly turned into a profitable venture for the producers. The movie was made on a reported budget of 15 Cr, and with a major portion of that already recovered through Netflix digital rights, every rupee earned at the ticket window now adds to its success. The gritty vibe of the film and its engaging plot seem to have caught the attention of the audience, leading to an impressive jump in show counts and occupancy as the weekend progressed. Analyzing the growth from the first day to the fourth, the momentum is clearly visible. On Day 1, the film opened with a net collection of 1.25 Cr from 1,728 shows. By Sunday, Day 4, the demand pushed the show count to 2,706, and the net collection grew to 6.00 Cr. This represents a massive surge compared to the opening day. The occupancy levels provide a clearer picture of this trend; in Chennai, the Tamil version started at 39.5 percent occupancy on Thursday and skyrocketed to 73.3 percent by Sunday. Similarly, Coimbatore saw a jump from 25.8 percent to 69.3 percent. This type of growth suggests that the audience is actively recommending the film, which is the best-case scenario for a mid-budget project. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The regional performance has been led by Tamil Nadu, which contributed 3.75 Cr to the gross on Sunday alone, bringing its total state gross to 9.30 Cr. Kerala has also emerged as a strong market, with a Sunday gross of 1.45 Cr taking its total to 2.56 Cr. In the Telugu states, the movie earned 1.00 Cr gross on Day 4, with Hyderabad recording a 32 percent occupancy. Significantly, the total India gross of 16.03 Cr has already overtaken the film's 15 Cr production budget within the first four days. With digital rights already securing the investment and the worldwide gross standing at 21.58 Cr, the project has moved into a super-profitable zone. Ticketing momentum in national chains and digital platforms also tells a story of increasing popularity. Over 42,000 tickets were sold in national chains throughout the weekend. Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge is part of the popular Spy Universe, a franchise known for its connected stories and high-scale action. Being a sequel has helped the film reach a wide audience both in India and internationally. The fact that it has stayed in theaters for eleven weeks is a rare achievement for an action movie, showing that viewers are still interested in this franchise even after two months of its release. During its eleventh weekend, the film showed consistent performance across its limited show count. On Friday, Day 72, it collected a net of 0.10 Cr from 203 shows with an overall occupancy of 14 percent. Saturday, Day 73, saw a 100 percent growth as the collection rose to 0.20 Cr with 225 shows and an occupancy of 20 percent. On Sunday, Day 74, the film held its ground with another 0.20 Cr net from 233 shows, with the overall occupancy peaking at 21 percent. This steady weekend performance brought the eleventh-weekend total to approximately 0.50 Cr net, which is a solid figure for a film at this stage of its theatrical life. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The 0.50 Cr net collected over this weekend indicates a typical tapering of earnings as the film moves further into its theatrical run. Compared to the 0.83 Cr net earned during the tenth weekend, there has been a decline of approximately 40 percent in the collections. This drop is standard for a major release at this stage, especially considering the film is still maintaining over 200 shows daily across the country while competing with newer titles. In national chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, the film sold over 3,100 tickets during the weekend. On Sunday alone, these chains accounted for approximately 780 tickets. PVR led the count with around 450 tickets, followed by INOX with 270 tickets and Cinepolis with 60 tickets. These rounded figures reflect the film's continued presence in major urban multiplexes. Digital engagement on BookMyShow also remained active, with 6.49K tickets booked on the eleventh Saturday alone, bringing the cumulative tickets sold on the platform to a staggering 1.83 crore across its entire run. Regional occupancy on Sunday was led by the National Capital Region (NCR), which recorded an 18 percent average across 59 shows, with afternoon screenings reaching as high as 31 percent. Ahmedabad maintained a 13 percent occupancy over 16 shows, peaking at 26 percent in the afternoon. These localized numbers indicate that the Spy Universe continues to find viewers in key Hindi-speaking markets, helping the film sustain its show count even as newer releases enter the fray.
