Patriot Week 1 Box Office: Record-Breaking Overseas, but Underwhelming Rs. 26.98 Cr Net Misses Top 10 by a 1.24% Margin

BY SACNILK

Patriot, the high-stakes collaboration bringing together the two titans of Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal and Mammootty, has concluded its first week at the box office. While the film has managed to etch its name into the record books internationally, the domestic performance presents a much more complex and somewhat concerning picture. When a film is mounted on a massive reported budget of 125 Crore, the expectations are naturally sky-high, but the current momentum suggests that the star power of the lead duo is doing the heavy lifting against a tide of mixed audience feedback. If we look at the internal trend, the film started with a solid 10.00 Crore on its opening Friday, but the slide thereafter has been quite steep. By the time it reached its seventh day, the daily collection dropped to 0.93 Crore, marking a 22.5 percent decline from the previous day. For a project mounted on a massive reported budget of 125 Crore, hitting sub-one-crore levels within the first week is a signal that the theatrical run might be shorter than anticipated. Across its first seven days, the film was screened across a total of 14,445 shows with an average weekly occupancy of 30.7 percent. This brings the total India net collection for the first week to 26.98 Crore, meaning it missed out on the all-time top 10 opening week list by a narrow 1.24 percent margin. The ticketing data from BookMyShow tells the story of an initial rush that eventually cooled off. The film recorded a total of 928,010 ticket sales for the week, but it is important to note that a massive 333,000 of these were sold during the pre-sales phase alone. Excluding those early bookings, the film sold 595,000 tickets during its active run. This indicates that while the curiosity to see the two legends together was immense, the subsequent word-of-mouth did not translate into a sustained surge in footfalls. Similarly, the performance in national cinema chains resulted in a final total of 69,950 tickets for the week. Despite the domestic struggle, the international market has provided a massive silver lining. Patriot has officially become Mammootty’s highest-grossing film overseas, surpassing the record previously held by Kalamkaval(₹38.70 Cr). The film earned 41.50 Crore gross internationally in just one week. The Middle East was a major contributor with a 1.2 million dollar opening day, while North America saw a steady weekend total of 334,000 dollars. In Australia and New Zealand, it made history by becoming only the second Malayalam film to ever cross the 100,000 Australian dollar mark on an opening day. By its first Monday in North America, it had already reached a total of 442,000 dollars. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) However, when we look at the historical rankings of Malayalam cinema, Patriot narrowly missed a spot in the elite Top 10 opening week collections. It currently sits at the 11th position, having been edged out by Marco by a razor-thin margin of just 34 Lakhs. Given the 125 Crore budget, missing this list highlights the uphill task the film faces in reaching the break-even mark. Here is how the current Top 10 stands for the opening week net collections in Mollywood: Top 10 Malayalam Movies - Opening Week India NetRANKMOVIE NAMEWEEK 1 INDIA NET1L2: Empuraan₹ 80.70 Cr2Vaazha 2₹ 55.05 Cr3Thudarum₹ 50.34 Cr4Lokah: Chapter 1₹ 42.45 Cr5Aadu Jeevitham₹ 40.82 Cr6Aadu 3₹ 36.63 Cr7Sarvam Maya₹ 35.10 Cr8Aavesham₹ 30.45 Cr9Guruvayoorambala Nadayil₹ 28.65 Cr10Marco₹ 27.32 Cr At the close of Week 1, the total India gross for Patriot stands at 31.30 Crore, with Kerala accounting for the bulk of it at 23.81 Crore. When combined with the record-breaking overseas gross of 41.50 Crore, the worldwide total has reached 72.80 Crore. While the overseas success is a personal milestone for Mammootty and a win for the industry's global footprint, the film will need a miracle of a second weekend to recover its massive investment and find stability in the domestic market.

Patriot Opening Weekend Box Office: Overseas Drives Nearly 60% of Total, Matching Top Mollywood Openers Despite Domestic Slide

BY SACNILK

So, what's the story with Patriot's opening weekend? The final numbers paint a picture of two very different battlegrounds: a struggling domestic run that saw interest wane day by day, contrasted by a blockbuster performance in overseas markets that ultimately powered the film's global total. Let's break down what happened in India first. The film's journey began with a bang but quickly lost steam. It kicked off with a strong ₹10.00 crore net on Friday, backed by a very healthy 66.0% occupancy rate. However, that momentum didn't carry through the weekend. Saturday's collections dropped to ₹6.15 crore, and the real test was Sunday, where the film saw its collections dip further to ₹5.50 crore, a notable 10.6% drop from the previous day. This Sunday figure also places it at the 12th spot for a Mollywood film's first Sunday, which is respectable but not in the top tier. This downward trend wasn't just in the overall numbers; it was clearly visible in key audience metrics. Take the national multiplex chains of PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, for instance. After selling nearly 55,000 tickets on Friday, sales plummeted to just over 32,000 by Sunday. Consequently, occupancy in these premium theaters cratered from a promising 47.81% on day one to a tepid 24.22% on day three. We see the exact same story reflected in BookMyShow sales, where after strong pre-sales, new ticket bookings dropped significantly from 251K on Friday to just 96K on Sunday. It's clear the initial buzz didn't translate into sustained walk-ins over the weekend. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) While the weekend trend was downwards, the overall first-weekend India net collection of nearly ₹22 crore is a significant figure. This performance places Patriot firmly in the top 3 biggest opening weekends for Mollywood this year, highlighting that despite the drops, its opening day was strong enough to secure a high rank. L2: Empuraan - ₹35 Cr Thudarum - ₹24 Cr Patriot - ₹22 Cr Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros - ₹21 Cr Aadu 3 - ₹21 Cr But while the domestic box office was cooling, the international circuits were on fire. The film pulled in a massive ₹38.50 crore gross from overseas markets in just three days, a figure that surprisingly eclipses its total India gross of ₹25.11 crore for the weekend. This overseas performance was the film's saving grace. Despite relatively underwhelming promotions, the film still delivered a strong overseas opening purely on the strength of star power, as both Mollywood heroes drew significant attention and turnout from the diaspora audience. Patriot Day-Wise Overseas Gross Collection DAY OVERSEAS GROSS Day 1 (Friday) ₹16.50 Cr Day 2 (Saturday) ₹13.00 Cr Day 3 (Sunday) ₹9.00 Cr Total ₹38.50 Cr (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The North American market was a standout performer, delivering a combined premiere and Day 1 gross of $177K. To put that in perspective, this is the third-biggest opening day for a Malayalam film in the region, a remarkable achievement. The total for the weekend from North America alone reached $334K. So, when you combine the modest ₹21.65 crore net from India with the stellar overseas run, you get the final picture: Patriot's opening weekend worldwide gross stands at ₹63.61 crore. In terms of audience engagement, its total of 805,000 tickets sold on BookMyShow places it alongside another major release this year, but it's not quite in the same league as the top-tier blockbusters. 1. Empuraan - 2.71M 2. Thudarum - 1.31M 3. Vaazha 2 - 1.28M 4. Aadu 3 - 1.16M 5. Lokah - 1.08M 6. Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil / Patriot - 805K Ultimately, Patriot's weekend is a story of international triumph compensating for domestic underperformance. Its journey from here, especially during the crucial weekdays in India, will be critical to watch. The film's global performance also marks a significant industry milestone. Patriot crossed the ₹50 crore worldwide gross mark in just three days, placing it among the fastest Mollywood films to ever achieve this feat. For context, here is how it compares to the top films in this category: 1. L2: Empuraan - Day 1 2. Thudarum - Day 3 3. Patriot - Day 3 4. Aadujeevitham - The Goat Life - Day 4 5. Lokah: Chapter 1 - Day 4 Securing the third spot on this list, alongside Thudarum, is a notable achievement. It directly underscores the power of the film's overseas opening, which was strong enough to propel it into the top ranks of worldwide openers despite a softer domestic trend. This solidifies Patriot's position as a major global success for the industry, driven primarily by its international appeal.

Parasakthi Box Office: Sivakarthikeyan's Political Drama Secures a Solid Start

BY SACNILK

Directed by the acclaimed Sudha Kongara, the highly anticipated Tamil historical political drama Parasakthi made its theatrical debut yesterday, January 10, 2026.The film arrived amidst high expectations and significant pre-release buzz, particularly as it marks a departure from lead actor Sivakarthikeyan's usual commercial roles into a more intense, content-driven narrative.Despite facing last-minute hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and concerns regarding a crowded January release window, the movie has managed to capture the audience's attention across the state. According to early estimates, Parasakthi has collected approximately ₹12.35 crore India Net and ₹14.75 crore India Gross on its opening day, while the overseas collection is around 10 crore. It is important to note that these figures are based on initial tracking and early estimates; the final figures may vary slightly as official data from all territories is consolidated. The film recorded an impressive overall Tamil occupancy of around 62.79% on Saturday, with night shows peaking at nearly 79%, indicating strong word-of-mouth that could propel the film through the rest of the Pongal week. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})   The film features a stellar ensemble cast, including Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role of Chezhiyan and Ravi Mohan (Jayam Ravi) as Thirunaadan. It also marks the highly anticipated Tamil debut of actress Sreeleela, who plays Rathnamala. The cast is further bolstered by Atharvaa Murali, Rana Daggubati and Basil Joseph in a cameo role, and a host of veteran actors like Prakash Belawadi and Guru Somasundaram.Set against the turbulent backdrop of the 1960s anti-Hindi imposition agitations in Madras State, the story explores the personal and political struggles of two brothers during a defining chapter of Tamil Nadu's history. Produced by Aakash Baskaran of Dawn Pictures, the film boasts high production values with music composed by G. V.Prakash Kumar and cinematography by the veteran Ravi K. Chandran. Parasakthi benefited significantly from a solo release window following the postponement of Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan, allowing it to secure extensive screen space across Tamil Nadu. While critics have offered mixed reviews regarding its pacing, the performances and the authentic recreation of the 1960s era have been widely praised, setting the stage for a competitive box office run in the coming days.

From Dhurandhar to the Universe of Hanu-Man: Akshaye Khanna is the formidable Shukracharya in Mahakali

BY SACNILK

The ambitious Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU) is expanding with a massive new addition. Acclaimed Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna is set to make his Telugu debut, stepping into the mythological world of Mahakali, the next major film from the universe of Hanu-Man. Khanna will be seen in the formidable role of Shukracharya, the powerful and wise guru of the asuras. The poster, which showcases the actor in a never-seen-before avatar, had already created significant buzz. With a long, flowing silver beard, ascetic robes, and luminous eyes, Akshaye Khanna embodies the powerful sage, radiating both meditative calm and immense power. The intense and mystical aesthetic of the poster, set against a backdrop of flames and ancient altars, was widely praised and set high expectations for his role in the PVCU. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Mahakali is the third installment in the PVCU, which began with the blockbuster success of Hanu-Man. While conceptualized, written, and created by Prasanth Varma, this new chapter will be directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru. The project is backed by RKD Studios and producers RK Duggal and Riwaz Duggal, promising a large-scale production. The inclusion of a character as pivotal as Shukracharya, the keeper of the secret to reviving the dead, hints at deeper cosmic conflicts and a significant expansion of the universe's lore. This role marks a significant milestone for Akshaye Khanna, not only as his official entry into Telugu cinema but also as another testament to his versatile acting prowess, following his recent lauded performance in Dhurandhar. The film will be released in multiple languages, including Hindi, ensuring a pan-India reach for this epic mythological saga. Mahakali is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films from the PVCU, especially with the powerhouse addition of Akshaye Khanna to its cast.

Chennai, November 13 - Actor Dulquer Salmaan's period drama thriller Kaantha is creating a strong buzz ahead of its November 14 release worldwide. Also starring Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani, and Rana Daggubati, the film had its premiere on November 12 in Chennai for media and critics, and the early reactions are highly positive. Set in the 1950s, in Madras, the film revolves around the legendary director in Tamil, Ayya, and his strained relationship with T. K. Mahadevan, a film star he helped establish and popularise. When Mahadevan renames a female-focused film production that was previously called "Shaantha" to suit his own image, to "Kaantha", the story takes a different direction. The early reactions hail Duqluer Salmaan and Bhayashri Borse's performances as standout among the rest. The direction by Selvamani Selvaraj is said to be one of the best in Tamil cinema recently, while the music by Jakes Bejoy is top-notch. Produced by Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films, Kaantha has its night premiere shows today, while the full-fledged release is on November 14. Akshaye Khanna To Play Asuraguru Shukracharya In Prasanth Varma's Mahakali

BY SACNILK

Hyderabad, September 30 - In October last year, filmmaker Prasanth Varma announced a female-led superhero movie Mahakali, in the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe, with an astonishing poster, showing a cosy moment between the girl and the tiger. Directed by a lady director, Puja Aparna Kolluru Mahakali, Mahakali is about Goddess Kali, an invincible warrior, the protector of the righteous, and the ultimate destroyer of evil. Ever since the announcement, fans have been asking for more updates regarding the film's cast, and the makers have finally dropped a big one. On Tuesday, September 30, the makers officially confirmed Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna on board and also dropped the first look poster of his in the film. The first look introduces Akshaye as Shukracharya, the revered teacher and spiritual guide of the Asuras (demons) in the Hindu epic. The poster shows the actor in a fierce and intense avatar, with long grey hair tied in a top knot, a flowing beard, a sacred tilak on his forehead, and a glowing white eye that adds a supernatural aura to his presence. Set against a dark and fiery backdrop, the imagery perfectly captures the mystical world of the Asuras, with Khanna exuding authority and wisdom as their revered guru Produced by Riwaz Ramesh Duggal under the banner of RKD Studios, Mahakali is the maiden film of Akshaye in Telugu cinema. The actor's inclusion gives the film a significant advantage, apart from being part of PVCU. The film is currently in production and is expected to be wrapped by December this year. The release date is not locked yet. Big Change: Maddock Films' Ambitious Mahavatar Opts Out of Christmas 2026 Slot Amid Vicky Kaushal's Scheduling Conflict

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, August 25 - Vicky Kaushal's ambitious epic action drama Mahavatar is no longer releasing on Christmas 2026, as the makers have reportedly postponed it to 2027 amid the shooting delay. The lucrative festive holiday period is now vacant for other films to occupy. According to the report by Peepingmoon.com, Mahavatar shoot has been delayed to next year amid Kaushal's scheduling conflict. To be directed by Amar Kaushik, the film was originally planned to start rolling by the end of 2025, which is reportedly not happening as the actor's Love and War with Sanjay Leela Bhansali is taking longer than expected to wrap. Apart from scheduling conflict with Love and War, Vicky Kaushal will also have to undergo months of intensive physical training to achieve the muscular physique necessary for his role in Mahavatar, which is based on Lord Parashurama. The report says that the makers are now eyeing to take the film on floors by April 2026. Produced by Maddock Films, Mahavatar is expected to be shot over a period of 6 months, followed by lengthy post-production work due to its heavy reliance on VFX. While the studio has not locked a new release date yet, the report says it might hit the big screen on Independence Day weekend 2027. If that happens, then the studio's Stree 3, which is currently slated for the same weekend, will be delayed. Mahavatar is the most ambitious production of Maddock Films yet, and the studio is leaving no stone unturned to make a visual spectacle on the big screens. In the movie, Vicky plays Lord Parashurama, who is the sixth avatar among the Dashavatara of the preserver god Vishnu. He is one of the Chiranjivi (Immortals), who will appear at the end of the Kali Yuga to be the guru of Vishnu's tenth and last incarnation, Kalki. Stay tuned...
