Why Bollywood Is Down And What They Need To Do In The Future?
Mumbai, February 6 - Bollywood is the biggest film industry of Indian cinema in terms of everything be it stars, reach, business or potential. But from the past few years, there's huge negativity happening for the industry. So despite recording one of the best years ever in terms of business produced, the Bollywood industry is not at its peak anymore.##
What went wrong for the Bollywood industry and what they should do now. One major problem that occurred for the industry, in general, is that the older megastars are working in much fewer films than they were working a decade ago. The Bollywood industry is star-driven. The bigger the star, the higher the business would be there, at least initially, and then if the content is liked, the film will put huge numbers across the board. The 90s stars who are still the most popular should go for more releases especially the Khan Troika as this is their last phase. ##
The next big problem is originality and novelty. The remakes in Bollywood were always in the fashion but since the past few years, it has peaked and as a result, the public is not getting excited for Bollywood as there is nothing new. Due to the arrival of OTTs, The public can watch the original films and when the same is being remade, they don't go for it. Of course, the exception is there as Kabir Singh became a huge blockbuster being a remake film but it was backed by blockbuster music which is a must for a youth mass love story for the Hindi audiences. What Bollywood needs to do is - Have to produce original films with a new and fresh story and if possible, with a bigger star cast as they will guarantee a wider reach.##
Another main problem of Bollywood is - They are targetting the niche audiences of metros rather than a larger section of an audience which limits the potential as masses can't relate to those films unless the films are extraordinary. Almost 80% of cinema-goers who watch Hindi films in theaters are from the middle class. They are the audience that is responsible for a HIT or A FLOP. ##
Before the advent of the multiplex, niche films were known as art films and which do not use to collect well due to non-existing audiences for those types of cinema then as it was a single screen era. But after the arrival of the multiplexes, these niche films are started collecting well and they were also started known as multiplex films which is fine as they contributed to the overall business of the films. But from the past few years, these types of films are made on a larger number than they should be, and mass commercial cinema which caters to almost 90% of the film-goers is being ignored. It is not that they are not being made but in a less number than usual and not in a correct way. So what happens is why you don't make movies for them, they don't have another choice than lapping on a different industry film even if the film is dubbed. ##
A similar scenario has happened on Xmas 2021 when an event film from Bollywood 83 was released alongside south dubbed the film Pushpa. 83 was not a bad film from any angle but it was not for the larger section of the audience and then they decided to go for the south dubbed film. The collections are there to prove which kind of films the Hindi audience are want to watch. If south dubbed film can reach 100cr even after opening to a mere 3cr then with Hindi stars who are bigger, 200cr can come eyes closed. But you need to make a film for the first. Our Directors and Producers need to make films for a larger audience. ##
As mentioned before, The Bollywood industry is star-driven and this is where another problem arises. The last huge star our industry has created was long back in 2000 in the form of Hrithik Roshan. Since then the Industry did not get a star with a genuine box office clout and popularity. Some stars who debuted in the late 2000s and early 2010s are still being considered new stars even after 10 years after their debut. Few of them are very talented but when the workload is so less than the expectations increases for their every single outing and it is tough to hit the expectation every single time. ##
They have followed the bandwagon of the Khan troika as all of them (Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Aamir Khan) have slowed down and working in a selected number of films. But what the new generation is forgetting is that it is their initial phase so they can't work in a limited number of films as that puts a lot of pressure on huge numbers. When you work in more films, failures don't affect you as success could be just around the corner. The new stars have to work in more films every year.##
