Kirti Kulhari Turns Producer With Upcoming Movie 'Nayeka'

Mumbai, Jan 10 (IANS) Actress Kirti Kulhari has made her name in the entertainment industry with movies such as 'Pink' and 'Uri: The Surgical Strike', now the actress is all set to show her talent as a producer with the upcoming feature film 'Nayeka'.## The actress shares about the movie and says: "'Nayeka' is a story of a struggling actress who gets caught in a crime by mistake followed by a cat and mouse chase further leading into a series of crazy events".## Kirti started shooting for the film on January 2.## She further elaborates on her new journey as a producer, saying: "When Vashisht (producer) first brought the film to me last year, I was immediately on board as an actor and I can proudly say I couldn't have asked for a better start to my journey as a producer as well. The kind of content I choose as an actor is pretty much the content I would want to make as a producer too. 'Nayeka' is a fun space for me to explore something I've never done before".## "It's a fast-paced dark comedy thriller and consists of very young, dynamic, and talented people coming together. Director and writer Ajaykiran Nair has done a wonderful job. A unique script such as this makes for a perfect beginning to my journey as a producer".## Kirti has launched her own production house called Kintsukuroi Films, whose first project will be a dark comedy thriller 'Nayeka' and she will be featuring in it.## She explains: "'Kintsukuroi' is a Japanese word which means the art of mending broken pottery with gold. The idea behind this thought is that when something is broken, one uses gold to mend it, making it even more beautiful than its initial broken state." "Similarly, with my production house, through the stories, I wish to mend broken hearts and fill the emptiness in people's lives through the art of films", she adds.## Kirti says: "Starting a production house has been an organic thought that has stayed with me strongly for a couple of years. As an actor, the last three years have been very fruitful for me and has got me interested in widening my horizon and delving into other aspects of filmmaking".## 'Khichdi: The Movie' actress says that the motive behind her production house is to create a more equal and collaborative atmosphere in the process of making a film and also to provide a platform to young talents.## "Unfortunately, a hierarchy does exist in the way things work and I would aim to bridge that gap, embrace and respect the talent brought to the table in all equality. The idea is also to create opportunities for young talent. Be it writers, directors, actors, technicians", asserts Kirti.## The shooting has started for the movie 'Nayeka', produced by Ward Wizard Entertainment in association with Kintsukuroi Films with producers Yatin Gupte, Sajid Melek, Vashisht Upadhyay, and Kirti Kulhari is directed and written by Ajaykiran Nair.## Stay tuned...

Peter Dinklage: Don't Try To Recreate 'Game of Thrones'

Los Angeles, Jan 10 (IANS) Actor Peter Dinklage, who played the part of Tyrion Lannister in the hit TV series "Game of Thrones", has warned HBO about the potential pitfalls facing the makers of 'House of the Dragon', the upcoming prequel show.## The 52-year-old actor explained: "I think the trick is not to try to recreate 'Thrones'. If you try to recreate it, that feels like a money grab. With a lot of sequels, the reason for them is that the first one made a lot of money, which is why they aren't as strong.## He added: "But I am excited to watch the 'House of the Dragon', purely as a viewer, not knowing what will happen next".## 'Game of Thrones' came to an end in 2019 and although some viewers were disappointed by the finale, the actor suggested that their frustration was over the top, reports femalefirst.co.uk.## He told The Independent: "People were just mad because nobody wanted it to be over. I know a lot of people were supposedly surprised by the ending, but if you paid attention, the clues were there".## In December, Dinklage called on 'Game of Throne' fans to "move on" from the show's finale. The actor urged viewers to rethink their criticisms of the much-maligned final season.## He said: "They wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together. By the way, it's fiction. There are dragons in it. Move on".## He also likened the show's conclusion to a break-up.## He explained: "I think the reason there was some backlash about the ending is because they were angry at us for breaking up with them.## "We were going off the air and they didn't know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that. We had to end when we did because what the show was really good at was breaking preconceived notions: Villains became heroes, and heroes became villains.## "It was the right time. No less, no more. You don't want to wear out your welcome, although I'm not sure that show could have".## Stay tuned...

Ram Charan Explains The Importance Of Big-Ticket Releases For Film Industry (IANS Interview)

Mumbai, Jan 9 (IANS) Telugu superstar and producer Ram Charan, whose upcoming release 'RRR' has been postponed till further notice, states that big releases play a vital role in regulating the economy of the film industry.## The big-budget films not only generate employment but also make sure that people working at the lower rung of the crew get paid well.## The actor recently spoke with IANS over the importance of star value for a film, the need for big-ticket releases, and the evolution of his working equation with filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli from 'Magadheera' to 'RRR'.## Elaborating on the hardwiring of star value with a film, the actor said, "The aspect of star value is only to bring the masses to the theatres. Post that the story takes over and the story has the responsibility to talk and make the audience sit in the theatre".## Laying down the framework of commercial potboilers vis a vis the film industry, the producer opines, "Every film has its own role to play the business part of the entire industry but these (big releases) are the films that bring glory back to the theatres. Not differentiating between the OTT films or theatre films but on the whole, all these (spectacle) films have their own part to play. Their numbers and their economy are integral to not just the industry but also to the government in the form of taxes".## Ask him how his working with Rajamouli has changed over the years, and he quips, "As actors, we evolve with every year, there has been a sea change especially since the last decade. S.S. Rajamouli has evolved multifold and just to work with such a person, who knows what he exactly wants from us, is a pleasure".## A filmmaker with clarity of thought at the helm is a blessing for any artiste working on a film set, "Our job gets so much easier when we are working with someone, who is so sure about what he's making. He has evolved so much, I am really blessed to work with him".## Although the third wave played spoilsport for the film's release, he is hopeful that normalcy would soon return and the audience while relieving the stress would also appreciate the efforts into putting this film together, "What I am really looking forward to from this movie apart from it becoming a huge hit is that people appreciate the hard work of the entire team for making a film of this scale".## "I think it's been so long that I have been in a theatre enjoying popcorn. Films like 'Suryavanshi', 'RRR' and 'Radhe Shyam' are those that should bring back the theatre days to glory and provide a holistic experience of movie watching to people", he concluded.## Stay tuned...

Kevin Smith Recalls Writing Failed 'Superman' Movie For Ben Affleck

os Angeles, Jan 9 (IANS) Filmmaker Kevin Smith spoke in detail about an unsuccessful attempt to get a 'Superman' movie off the ground with Hollywood star Ben Affleck in the title role.## Smith was the inaugural guest on Yahoo Entertainment's 'The Never-Weres' series, reports variety.com. Both men were coming off the success of 'Mallrats' at the time.## Warner Bros. was in development on a new 'Superman' movie titled 'Superman Reborn', but Smith thought the screenplay was "terrible". That's when Smith pitched his own 'Superman' movie based on 'The Death of Superman' comic series. Smith's script went into development with producer Jon Peters, but the two clashed overcasting.## "I was writing it for Affleck," Smith said.## "Ben was heating up. Like he was there. I think he'd been hired for 'Armageddon'. Affleck, he's a f***ing giant, like he's built like a superhero, built like a giant action figure, particularly with the height. And then he puts on the muscles there too. So in my head and heart, it was always Ben and Michael Rooker".## Smith wanted Affleck for Superman and Rooker for the villainous role of Lex Luther, but Peters had a different idea. The Hollywood producer wanted to cast Sean Penn as Superman, as the actor was hot off an Oscar nomination for Best Actor thanks to his role in the 1995 drama 'Dead Man Walking'.## "(Jon Peters) goes, 'Look in (Penn's) eyes in that movie, he's (got) haunted eyes, the eyes of a killer'", Smith said.## "And I was like, 'Dude, it's Superman. You know, that's not how most people think of Superman. But he wanted to reinvent it. He wanted something gritty, graphic, and grown-up. He essentially wanted like what Zack Snyder eventually did (in 'Man of Steel' 'Batman v Superman' and 'Justice League,' which coincidentally featured Affleck as Batman opposite Henry Cavill's Superman)'".## Tim Burton eventually took over the reins of 'Superman Lives' and set Nicolas Cage to star. Affleck would get his superhero shot years later by being cast as Batman/Bruce Wayne in 'Batman v Superman'.## Affleck is reprising the character in Warner Bros' upcoming comic book tentpole 'The Flash', due in theatres on November 4.## Stay tuned...

IANS Sunday Special: The Return Of The Character Actor (Column: B Town)

Mumbai, January 9 - The character artistes lent credibility to a film's story, they filled the screen and, what is more, helped break the monotony of the lead pair dominating the screen. All that because these characters were woven into the script. Whatever the draw, popularity, or fan following of a star, he or she alone could not carry a film through.## Some of these artists who propped up a film were versatile, but a lot of the character actors in our earlier films were typecast and chosen when required for a particular character for which they were loved by their audience. In fact, some of these were so popular, roles were written especially to cast them in a film.## Some specialized in negative characters, some as backup comedians (just about every film had a leading comic actor). People never got tired of these actors playing the same role again and again. In fact, that is what was expected of them!## A film's hero could not deliver it all. The character artistes made a film wholesome and held it together. There were some great character actors such as Balraj Sahni, Jayant, Iftekhar, Rehman, Sapru, Kanhaiyalal, and Jeevan, whose very names in the credit titles added to a film's value.## Balraj Sahni and Jayant enjoyed a towering personalities besides being great talents. Iftikhar, while also doing varied roles, made a strong presence playing a no-nonsense top cop. Sapru was gifted with a royal presence and fitted all roles of a 'khandani' wealthy man. Om Prakash was in a class of his own. Kanhaiyalal and Jeevan were both scheming, deceptive manipulators each in their own inimitable style.## And, then there was Jagdish Raj, who was typecast throughout his acting career to play a police inspector, so much so he acted a cop in as many as 144 movies and this has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.## Can you imagine Manoj Kumar's 'Shaheed' or, later, 'Upkar' without Pran, or Irrfan's 'Hindi Medium' without Deepak Dobriyal, or 'Chupke Chupke' without Om Prakash? There are many such films. Comic characters have been a part of our myths and stories of great kingdoms among other tales. Narad in our myths is the ultimate example. The film stories continued this tradition.## Be it a family drama, a thriller, or an action movie, a comedian in the cast was a must and his/her appearance on the screen was looked forward to like clowns in a circus. It is no wonder that some comic actors such as Rajendra Nath, Johnny Walker, Mehmood, and Deven Verma went on to become legends.## They were a must in a film's cast and often a script was altered to accommodate a comedian. A comedian was a stress reliever and, what they called, relief!## There came a time when Mehmood was the draw for a film and not the film's hero! Legend has it that he was paid more than a film's lead actor! Mehmood's success never went to his head, but it started eating into others' heads. Stars nursed bigger egos than their success could afford them. Despite knowing that Mehmood was a factor in the success of their films, they did not want him in their films anymore.## The other cause of the fall of many character actors was their ambition to make their own films. Mehmood managed it quite well for a time. but others, such as Deven Verma, Asrani, Mohan Choti, from among the few sought-after in those days, took to making their own films only to play the lead role and, in the process, stopped getting assignments from other makers.## Johnny Lever was a highly sought-after comic star, the best since Mehmood. His name in the cast brought people to cinema theatres. Filmmakers are prospect hunters. One well-known producer got this bright idea to cast Johnny in the lead and print some quick money!## Tempting though it would have sounded initially, Johnny sat over the offer for two months and decided he was better off doing what he was doing, playing a comic sidekick, and continuing to make the Rs 15-20 lakh (considered very high in those days) he was making per film, instead of falling for a lead role and losing it all.## Then followed an era when the character artists were out of favor almost totally. There were no writers who could pen a script involving many characters. No writer to script a near-three-hour film. On their part, the lead actors started doing it all. The hero filled in for all, negative, comic, buffoon, whatever.## Amitabh Bachchan's films accommodated many character actors but there came a time when just about every other character was woven into his and the films suffered. The same happened with other film heroes till Hindi filmmakers started remaking South Indian hits.## South Indian films and their remakes filled the screen with dozens of actors. Half-a-dozen comic villains such as Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Ranjeet, Tej Sapru, Asrani, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Amjad Khan, Anupam Kher, and so on.## Then came a phase when the lead heroes of yore staged a retune in character roles. Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Dharmendra, and then Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff were some.## But now, real character actors have staged a comeback. Not through the big bill commercial potboilers, but through small films by makers who chose closer-to-life stories. The films told stories a viewer could relate to. Their films, as a rule, were low- or moderate-budget productions, such as 'Fukrey', 'Vicky Donor', 'Piku', 'Kahaani', 'English Vinglish', 'Paan Singh Tomar'.## There are some character artists who have carved a niche for themselves. Certain films are identified with them, rather than the other way round!## There are actors such as Pankaj Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra, Imraan, Rajesh Sharma, Deepak Dobriyal, Nawazudddin Siddiqui, Pitobash Tripathy, Atul Kulkarni, Manish Chaudhary, Ranveer Shorey, Brijendra Kala, Adil Hussain, Pawan Malhotra, Ali Fazal, Jimmy Shergill, Vipin Sharma, Annu Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Yashpal Sharma, Kay Kay Menon, Manoj Joshi, Ashutosh Rana, Arshad Warsi, Ronit Roy, Varun Sharma. The list can go on.## Sadly, most of these talents do not get their due in mainstream cinema. The story is the same. Our writers don't think of creating characters, besides the hero and villain (the heroine being mandatory). But, now, the popularity of some of the actors on OTT is compelling filmmakers to cast them.## Take for example, Pratik Gandhi. An unknown stage actor till the other day, he is now doing about half-a-dozen films. Imagine, Pankaj Tripathi is now seen in as many, if not more, television commercials as any top hero!## Stay tuned...
