'Oppenheimer' and 'Barbie' Advance Booking Status and Opening Day Box Office Expectations

Mumbai, July 19 - Hollywood films have done well at the Indian box office this year and the momentum continued with Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. It was released on July 12 and is doing very good business, grossing over 85 crores so far. ## The month of July is particularly going to be a major period for Hollywood titles as next in the month are Christopher Nolan's atom bomb movie Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's fantasy comedy film Barbie. Scheduled to release on July 21, both Oppenheimer and Barbie are set to spring a big surprise at the Indian box office. ## Oppenheimer is particularly having an excellent response in the advanced sales in India as far as the national multiplex chains are concerned. It has sold approx. 200K tickets in three national chains (PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis) for the opening day which is among the top advances post the covid-19 pandemic. ## The IMAX format of the movie is almost witnessing a near-sold-out opening day while the English 2D format is also having a very good response. With these sorts of pre-sales, the opening of 20 crores would have been a sure shot given but the movie is expected to have low spot booking. However, it will still be eyeing a 15-17 crores start which will be termed very good. ## Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Pictures' Barbie starring Margot Robbie in the title role and Ryan Gosling as Ken, also has good pre-booking despite the competition as it has sold approx. 80K tickets for the opening day in three national chains. The advance sales of the film got momentum over the last 48 hours. ## Barbie is expected to score around 6-7 crores which will be a good opening. Had it been a solo Hollywood release, an opening of 10+ crores net was given with these sorts of advances, but due to the competition, the Hollywood audiences will be divided with most of them likely to prefer Oppenheimer. Also, there will be Mission Impossible 7 which is also likely to retain a decent amount of screens. ## The combined opening of both films should be around 20-23 crores net in India and if they receive positive talks, the opening weekend could well be around 75-90 crores net. The extended 9-day first week is looking in the range of 80 crores net. ## MI7 is set to emerge as the 4th Hollywood hit in India this year after Fast X, John Wick 4, and Evil Dead Rise and is likely to top 100 crores net to become the second Hollywood film to do so this year after Fast X. ## The Tom Cruise-starrer movie will see competition this weekend from its fellow Hollywood movies, Oppenheimer and Barbie. Los Angeles, July 18 - The Hollywood trade is buzzing for the epic clash between two of the most-awaited movies, Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" which are scheduled to take on each other on July 21. ## The stakes are high for both the aforementioned films and the anticipation is skyrocketing as the release date is getting nearer. Both the movies, completely opposite to each other, are expected to be box office heavyweights and the latest projections indicate the same. ## There has been a significant improvement in "Barbie" as well as "Oppenheimer's" box office projections after the recently concluded premieres where both the movies received rousing receptions from critics. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age. ## "Oppenheimer" will reportedly be run for nearly three hours and it consists of unbelievably zero CGI shots, as confirmed by Nolan himself recently. Meanwhile, Cillian Murphy said during an interview on Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast (via Variety), that the movie was filmed in just 57 days.## "We made the movie unbelievably quickly. We made it in 57 days. The pace of that was insane", the actor revealed. In comparison to Nolan's previous movies, the World War II survival thriller "Dunkirk" was shot in 68 days, and his massive spy movie "Tenet" was shot in 96 days. ## "The sets are huge, but it feels like being on an independent movie. Los Angeles, July 16 - Tom Cruise muscles his star power as his latest summer blockbuster "Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One" scores a huge opening weekend of $234.10 million at the global box office, the biggest global debut for the franchise. ## Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the 7th installment in the Mission Impossible series hits the franchise's best 5-day record with a $78.5 million launch, including $55 million between Friday and Sunday. The movie was, however, projected to reach $90 million over the 5-day weekend.## The Friday to Sunday opening of $55 million of "MI7" landed behind 2018's "Mission: Impossible – Fallout" ($61 million) and 2000's "Mission: Impossible II" ($57.8 million). Trade believes that a traditional Friday release of the latest blockbuster would have easily hit $75+ million over the Fri-Sun weekend, however, the 5-day opening is still reasonable as the movie has enough power to have a long run. ## Overseas, Tom Cruise scored his biggest opening ever with $155.60 million on a 5-day opening weekend over 70 markets. The previous best for the actor was "Top Gun: Maverick" which grossed $126 million overseas opening weekend before the movie finished its run at around $1.5 billion globally. ## China was the number one overseas market of MI7 with a $25.4 million opening weekend, followed by Korea with $14.3 million, the UK with $13.8 million, India with a huge $9 million, and Australia with $8.3 million start. ## MI7 will have a stiff competition going forward as Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" and Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" are opening on July 21.
