South Indian Pongal/Sankranthi Blockbusters Hit 700 Crores At The Worldwide Box Office

Chennai, January 22 - The year 2023 has opened with a bang for the Indian film industry, led by South Indian films as the gamble to release four big films around the same time on this Pongal/Sankranthi festival has paid off. ## Pongal/Sankranthi has always been a lucrative festival for South Indian films at the box office, and this year was no different with four biggies released and got succeeded. Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar released their biggies "Varisu" and "Thunivu", respectively. On the other hand, Chiranjeevi and Nandamuri Balakrishna brought their films "Waltair Veerarya" and "Veera Simha Reddy". ## All four aforementioned films were having over 400 crores on their shoulders as far as the theatrical share collection is concerned. The combined business of all four films has already crossed the break-even mark as the overall gross collection of them has rocked 700 crores at the global box office. Thalapathy Vijay's "Varisu" is leading over the other three films though it is yet to achieve its individual break-even target. ## Have a look at the total collection details of all four films worldwide (as of January 21) - ## Varisu - The family action drama film has grossed approx. 244 crores worldwide, including 166 crores domestically so far in just 11 days and it will soon turn into a profitable venture for the investors despite the high stake. The movie was valued at around 140 crores and has already recovered approx. 128 crores, needing another 10-12 crores for the break-even. It has a direct clash with "Thunivu", and despite that, the movie has managed to cross the 100 crores mark in Tamil Nadu state. ## Waltair Veerayya - The action drama film has become the first clean hit for Megastar Chiranjeevi since "Khaidi No. 150" (2017). It has so far grossed approx. 178 crores worldwide, including approx. 153 crores in India in just 9 days. It was valued at approx. 89 crores and has already managed to make approx. 17 crores profit. It will soon enter a 200 crores club worldwide. ## Thunivu - Another film that has managed to achieve the break-even target within two weeks. In just 11 days since its release, the heist action thriller film has grossed approx. 168 crores, including approx. 118 crores domestically. It was valued at around 85 crores and it has surpassed this mark and turned into a profitable venture. ## Veera Simha Reddy - The Nandamuri Balakrishna's action drama gets saved by the Sankranthi holidays. It will eventually achieve the break-even target but is unlikely to big a big profitable film for the involved parties. Despite all this, it has become the highest-grossing film for NBK. Mythri Movie Makers Hits Jackpot With Two Blockbusters

Hyderabad, January 17 - The new year of 2023 has kickstarted on a blockbuster note for the Indian film industry, led by South Indian films. Amid the uncertainty of the box office future due to heavy clashes, all four top releases - Varisu, Thunivu, Waltair Veerayya, and Veera Simha Reddy, this Pongal/Sankranthi festival have delivered big to step up the stage for upcoming films. ## Among the aforementioned films, Megastar Chiranjeevi's "Waltair Veerayya", and Nandamuri Balakrishna's "Veera Simha Reddy" have been produced by Mythri Movie Makers, one of the leading Telugu production houses. The studio was under extreme pressure before the release but after the opening weekend, it is having celebrations with the kind of response its films have got from the audiences. ## Both Mythri's films have crossed the 100 crores gross mark at the worldwide box office and are likely to achieve the break-even mark in the opening week itself. "Veera Simha Reddy" was released on January 12 while "Waltair Veerayya" hit screens a day later. While both films have performed exceptionally well it is the Chiranjeevi-starrer action drama that emerged as a bigger hit. ## Directed by Bobby, "Waltair Veerayya" has grossed approx. 121 crores worldwide in just 4 days, becoming the biggest grosser for Chiranjeevi since "Sye Ra Narshima Reddy" (2019). The break-even target for the film is around 90 crores and it will reach there in the next couple of days and turn into a profitable venture for the investors. ## "Veera Simha Reddy", on the other hand, is directed by Gopichand Melineni and has also crossed the 100 crores gross mark in 6 days worldwide and becomes only the second film for NBK to achieve the feat. It is all set to become the biggest grosser for the veteran actor, surpassing "Akhanda" which grossed around 120 crores worldwide in 2021. ## Ahead of the release, the Chiranjeevi-starrer was having low advance booking as compared to "Veera Simha Reddy" and the opening was also lower than the NBK-fronted film, however, after the opening day of each, "Waltair Veerayya" started its dominance over other films at the Telugu box office. Directed by Bobby, the movie has completed its 3-day opening weekend on a blockbuster note. ## After grossing approx. 57 crores in the first two days, "Waltair Veerayya" witnesses another mammoth day at the domestic box office as it scores an estimated 22+ crores gross on its third day/first Sunday to push the total collection to around 80 crores gross. ## Also starring Ravi Teja in a pivotal role, "Waltair Veerayya" scored approx. 35 crores share collection in the Telugu states in the first two days. The share collection on Sunday is likely to be in the range of 12 crores, for around 47 crores share in the opening weekend, which is more than 50% of the total business of the film. ## "Waltair Veerayya" also has a shot at crossing 100 crores gross worldwide in the opening weekend. Including today's estimated domestic collection, the worldwide total of the film is around 93 crores. If not today, it will surely go past 100 crores by tomorrow, to become Chiranjeevi's biggest grosser since "Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy" (2019). ## Meanwhile, Nandamuri Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy, after rocking the biggest opening day for an Indian movie in 2023, is holding on a decent level. The Gopichand Malineni-directed action drama grossed approx. 62 crores in the first three days, and grossed an estimated 12+ crores on its first Sunday for around 74 crores domestic opening weekend. ## The share collection of "Veera Simha Reddy" is around 44 crores after an estimated 7 crores share on Sunday. Hyderabad, January 14 - Megastar Chiranjeevi and Ravi Teja's action drama Waltair Veerayya has had an excellent opening day at the domestic box office for approx. 35 crores. The movie managed to outdo conservative opening-day expectations and put up very good numbers. ## Directed by Bobby, "Waltair Veerayya" got mixed to positive responses and despite that, the movie sees a phenomenal hold on the second day. As per the early estimates, the film grossed 20+ crores on its second day, dropping below 40%. The share collection on the second day is approx. 13 crores.## The total domestic gross collection of "Waltair Veerayya" after two days is approx. 56 crores gross while the share collection is around 36 crores, which is approx. 40% of the total business of the movie. The advance booking for Sunday is excellent for the movie, indicating another big day at the box office for it. ## Meanwhile, Nandamuri Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy had a huge drop of approx. 75% on the second day for 10 crores gross. It witnesses a good jump of around 40% on its 3rd day for an estimated 14+ crores gross. The total gross collection for the movie now stands at around 63 crores after 3 days while the share collection is around 38 crores. ## Both "Waltair Veerayya" and "Veera Simha Reddy" are getting advantage of the Sankranthi holidays with the former clearly showing signs of audiences' acceptance after the big opening days advantages. Hyderabad, January 13 - Megastar Chiranjeevi and Ravi Teja's action drama film Waltair Veerayya is off to an excellent start at the box office. Despite the mixed reviews and audiences' responses, the Bobby-directed film utilizes the Sankranthi holiday. ## As per the early estimates, "Waltair Veerayya" grossed an estimated 33+ crores on the opening day. The share collection is expected to be 20+ crores, which is almost 1/4 of the total business of the movie.## "Waltair Veerayya" has a much better opening than Chiranjeevi's last release "Godfather" which opened to around 24 crores gross last year. The latest tentpole could have taken an even bigger start if it had got a solo release as there is also Nandamuri Balakrishna's "Veera Simha Reddy". ## Meanwhile, "Veera Simha Reddy", which opened to the biggest start for an Indian movie in 2023 with a domestic gross collection coming in close to 40 crores, has a drop on its second day. As per the early estimates, the movie dropped in the range of 60% for an estimated 10+ crores gross. The final numbers on the second day can go to 12-13 crores depending the night shows. ## The Gopichand-directed movie gets affected due by "Waltair Veerayya" as the screen count reduced drastically but still, the second-day numbers are poor considering the huge opening.
