The Indian Box Office Grosses 350+ Crore During Independence Day Weekend 2024; 'Stree 2' Leads With 230 Crore Gross

Mumbai, August 19 - The Indian Box Office delivered 350+ crores gross collection during the Independence Day weekend (August 15-18). Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-fronted horror-comedy Stree 2 led the pack with a monstrous 230 crore gross, which is almost 2/3 of the total collection. ## Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 has had the second-biggest opening weekend of 2024 in India after Prabhas-fronted Kalki 2898 AD which grossed approximately 370 crores in its 4-day first weekend. While Kalki 2898 AD was a multilingual movie, Stree 2 was in just the Hindi language. ## Apart from Stree 2, the other movies failed to capitalise on the big opportunity during the long weekend. Chiyaan Vikram's Thangalaan was the second biggest domestic grosser with approximately 33.75 crores collection which is underwhelming. The fellow Tamil title Demonte Colony 2, however, performed well with approximately 17.75 crores gross against minimum expectations.## Akshay Kumar's Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham-fronted Vedaa, which were expected to do well during the Holiday period, failed without making much noise with approximately 17 crores gross and 16.50 crores gross domestic collection, respectively. ## The other two films which failed miserably at the box office are the Telugu movies, Double iSmart and Mr. Bachchan which grossed approximately 13.75 crores and 9.50 crores, respectively. Mumbai, August 19 - Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao's horror-comedy blockbuster Stree 2 has had a sensational extended first weekend at the worldwide box office which saw it crossing all but Fighter to already become the second biggest Bollywood grosser of 2024 in just 4 days. ## Directed by Amar Kaushik, the blockbuster sequel is simply unstoppable in India, earning approximately 191.50 crores net (230 crores gross) collection in the first 4 days+previews. With this, it has become the second biggest Bollywood grosser domestically after Fighter which scored approximately 255 crores gross in India. ## Stree 2 will outgross Fighter with its 5th-day collection which will make it the number 1 Bollywood title of the year at the Indian box office. As far as the Hindi box office is concerned, Pan India superstar Prabhas-fronted Kalki 2898 AD is currently the number 1 with 293+ crores net (345+ crores gross). ## Internationally, Maddock Films' production had a fantastic first weekend with 43 crores gross, for 273 crores worldwide cume in 4 days. It will top 300 crores gross collection at the worldwide box office today and then, will look to down Fighter (359 crores gross) in the second weekend to emerge as the biggest Bollywood grosser of the year. ## Needless to say, Stree 2 is already the highest-grossing movie for Maddock Films along with Rajkummar Rao. It opens with the introduction of Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He is seen fighting like a brave soldier as he turns into the protector of Swarajya and defender of Dharma. ## The makers also revealed the look of Akshaye Khanna who is playing the role of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Mumbai, August 18 - Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-fronted Stree 2 has a monstrous first 4-day weekend at the domestic box office with close to 200 crores net collection after the historic Sunday total of 50+ crores net. ## The Amar Kaushik's directorial blockbuster has had its second 50+ crores net day and the biggest so far in its short run so far. According to the early estimates, the horror-comedy scored in the range of 55 crores net (+/-), which takes its total collection to around 190 crores in just 4 days.## Despite the heavy competition, Stree 2 has been performing like a solo frontloaded blockbuster and the opening weekend numbers are proof of that. There is a holiday on Monday as well due to Raksha Bandhan, so another solid collection is expected as the movie is looking at 225+ crores net extended 5-day weekend. ## Stree 2 has surpassed Shaitaan (148+ crores net) to become the second biggest Bollywood grosser of the year with today's collection. It will beat Figther (212.75 crores net) by tomorrow to become the number 1 Bolly grosser of 2024. Los Angeles, August 18 - 20th Century Studios' science fiction horror Alien: Romulus off to the global opening of over $100 million, against the production budget of $80 million. This is an excellent start for a movie which was supposed to go directly for digital release before the change in plans.## Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), Romulus opened at number 1 this weekend at the domestic (North America) box office, grossing a strong $41.5 million (350 crores). This is the second biggest opening weekend start in the 7 films Alien franchise. ## At the Overseas box office, the Fede Álvarez's directorial collected $66.7 million (560 crores) for the worldwide opening weekend of $108.2 million (910 crores). It opened above industry projection for both domestic and worldwide which was projected at $75 million weekend.## Alien: Romulus is the seventh instalment in the Alien franchise. It will be a Pan India movie and is expected to start rolling next year after the duo of Aamir and Lokesh complete their ongoing projects.## Aamir is the latest in the famous Khan trio to collaborate with a South Indian director. Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan teamed with director Atlee for the action thriller Jawan which was a monstrous box office blockbuster. Salman Khan is also shooting for director A.R. Chennai, August 18 - The trailer of Thalapathy Vijay's sci-fi action thriller The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT) scored 34+ million views in the first 24 hours on YouTube, emerging one of the most viewed South Indian movie trailers. ## Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the GOAT trailer scored 29.25+ million views in the original Tamil version, making it the second most-viewed Tamil trailer of all time in the first 24 hours, behind only Leo (32 million), also headlined by Vijay.## Overall, it is the 4th most-viewed trailer in a single South Indian language, after Guntur Kaaram (37.60 million), Salaar Part 1 (32.50 million), and Leo. Apart from the Tamil version, the GOAT trailer scored 3.25 million views in Hindi and 2.30 million views in the Telugu version, for 34.75+ million overall views during the said period. ## Produced by AGS Entertainment, the GOAT star Vijay in a dual role as a father and son. The makers have used de-age technology to create the son's character. Kochi, August 17 - Malayalam superstar Mohanlal's long-awaited fantasy film Barroz has once again been postponed from September 12 and is now to be released on October 3rd during the Gandhi Jayanti weekend. ## Directed and headlined by Mohanlal, the movie is based on the novel Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure by Jijo Punnoose. On Saturday (August 17), Mohanlal took to social media to announce the new release date. It will be the actor's next release since Malaikottai Vaaliban in January this year.## Produced by Aashirvad Cinemas, Barroz has been in the making since 2021. The movie was initially planned for a March 2023 release before it was postponed to Onam 2023. However, due to the delay in the post-production work, it was again postponed to March 2024, and then to September 2024 release, and will not hit theaters in October.## In the movie, Barroz, a treasure guardian (played by Mohanlal) has been protecting Vasco da Gama's hidden treasure for 400 years and has been entrusted to hand over the wealth only to a true descendant of da Gama. On its third day (first Saturday), it scored an estimated 43+ crores net and with that, the movie has crossed the 100 crore mark, becoming the 4th Bollywood movie and 10th Indian movie of the year to do so.## Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 is the 7th film of Shraddha Kapoor and the second for Rajkummar Rao (after Stree) to top 100 crores net collection.
