Warner Bros. Sci-Fi Epic 'Dune' Finally Hits $400 Million At The Global Box Office

Mumbai, February 15 - Warner Bros.' big-budget sci-fi epic film "Dune" has broken into $400 million at the global box office, after getting a major boost due to its domination at the 94th Academy Awards nominations last week. ## The Denis Villeneuve-directed adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert scored 10 nominations, including the Best Picture, in the recently announced nominations. After getting re-released in the domestic market (North America), "Dune" gets benefitted from Oscar's nominations buzz and scored $145K on its 17th weekend for a total domestic cume of $107.8 million. ## Overseas, the film grossed $320K on its 22nd weekend, thanks to the re-release in Korea, reaching $292.3 million at the international box office. The movie currently stands at $400.2 million at the global box office, becoming the 8th highest-grossing Hollywood title of the covid-19 pandemic era.## Interesting to note that "Dune" was released simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. So the box office numbers are satisfying for the studio, especially knowing that fact that it was also a major HBO Max success in North America. It is also Warner Bros.' second-biggest grossing title during the pandemic, after "Godzilla vs. Kong" ($468.2M), which was also a day-and-date release on HBO Max. ## Apart from the USA, the biggest market for "Dune" is China where it has grossed $39.5 million, followed by France with $32.6 million, the United Kingdom with $30 million, Germany with $22.5 million, and Russia with $21.3 million. ## Set in the far future, it follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The movie stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem in key roles. ## The 2nd part of "Dune" is under development. ## Stay tuned...

Tom Holland's 'Uncharted' Opens Solid At The International Box Office

Mumbai, February 14 - With "Spider-Man: No Way Home" still putting strong numbers at the box office, Tom Holland's next film "Uncharted" has kicked off the international box office on a strong note. ## Ahead of its domestic (North America) debut on February 18, Sony's big-screen adaptation of its popular video game series opened in 15 international markets and grossed a solid $21.5 million over Valentine's Day weekend. There were questions about whether Tom Holland could bring audiences to theaters outside his "Spider-Man" movies, and "Uncharted" might have answered all those questions. ## Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the action-adventure film had the biggest start in the United Kingdom, swinging to $6.4 million, followed by Russia with $4.5 million, Spain with $3.5 million, and Ukraine with $1.3 million.## Compared to pandemic-era blockbusters, "Uncharted" movie is tracking 12% above "Eternals", 18% above "Black Widow" and 21% higher than "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" at similar points in their theatrical rollouts, according to Variety.## The $120 million budgeted movie, will debut in the U.S. and Canada in the coming weekend along with India, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea. Marvel Studios 'Doctor Strange 2' Locks Final Release Date In India

Mumbai, February 14 - Marvel Studios' next big feature, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" has finalized the release date for the Indian audience. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, the highly-awaited superhero movie will debut in theaters on May 6, 2022, in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam languages. ## On Monday (Feb. 14), Marvel released the full trailer of the sequel of the 2016's film. It is the second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that explores the multiverse concept, after "Spider-Man: No Way Home". "Doctor Strange 2", however, takes deep into the concept where things become messier than "No Way Home". ## In the latest trailer, one can see that Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme is under attack from all sides after he opened that gate of the multiverse in "No Way Home", which goes wrong as several monstrous beings invade the MCU. To deal with that he seeks the help of Scarlet Witch played by Elizabeth Oleson, however, it is not as easy as it looks. ## Meanwhile, "Doctor Strange 2" is rumored to have many cameos including Captain Marvel. In one of the clips of the trailer, it looks like Captain Marvel is fighting Scarlet Witch. Among the other possible cameos, previously Fox-owned characters like X-Men may debut in MCU with the Multiverse of Madness. The rumors have also stated that Tom Cruise plays a cameo as Iron Man in this blockbuster sequel. ## The movie is being directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, Rachel McAdams, among many other Marvel characters. ## ## Stay tuned...

Gal Gadot's 'Death On The Nile' Opens To Number 1 At The Domestic Box Office

Los Angeles, February 13 - Gal Gadot-starrer murder mystery film "Death on the Nile", took an underwhelming start at the domestic box office with $5.1 million on Friday, followed by Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson romantic comedy "Marry Me" with $3 million at number 2. ## Disney and 20th Century Studios' "Death on the Nile", based on the famous Agatha Christie novel, is heading towards $12.7 million in its opening weekend at the domestic (North America) box office. The opening of the film, however, is only half as much as the opening day gross of its predecessor "Murder on the Orient Express" ($10.7 million) in 2017, which went on to score $102 million domestic gross. ## The Kenneth Branagh-directed cost $90 million in production, and Hollywood trade experts believe that the movie will find it tough to recover the production cost. The movie has faced several delays due to the covid-19 pandemic while the production of the film was greenlit shortly after the release of "Murder on the Orient Express". ## According to Variety, the box office fate of "Death on the Nile" may have seemed prewritten for quite some time now. Many of Disney's projects rooted in the Fox era have been perceived as disappointments, with films like "West Side Story", "The Last Duel" and "The King's Man" coming up short at the box office.## The film is the third screen adaptation of Christie's novel, following the 1978 film and an episode of the television series Agatha Christie's Poirot broadcast in 2004. It stars Gal Gadot, Hercule Poirot, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright in key roles. ## Stay tuned...

'Spider-Man' Best Picture Oscars Snub Disappoints Jimmy Kimmel And Director Kevin Smith

Los Angeles, February 12 - The recently announced nominations for the 94th Academy Awards are being criticized for not picking "Spider-Man: No Way Home", in the Best Picture category. Despite being hailed critically and doing wonders at the box office, "No Way Home" was nominated only for the Best Visual Effects category. ## Jimmy Kimmel called out on Academy on Tuesday's late-night episode and argued that the biggest snub was the movie everyone is going to see, even Academy voters. He also said that "Don't Look Up" was not worthy to be picked for a Best Picture nomination. ## "The biggest snub today in my opinion, and I'm actually even angry about this, I'm kind of embarrassed to say, is the unforgivable omission of Spider-Man: No Way Home", he said. "You're telling me Don't Look Up was better than Spider-Man? It certainly was not", he argued. Kimmel wondered how "No Way Home" didn't get one of the ten nominations this year and called it a "great" movie. ## Among the other people who are not happy with "Spider-Man: No Way Home's" Best Picture snub is director Kevin Smith. On his podcast, FatMan Beyond (via Deadline), Smith did not say which of the ten should be eliminated to make way for Spider-Man.## "I would just like to congratulate the good folks who made Spider-Man: No Way Home for the very deserved Best Picture nomination that I'm sure it got, I didn't read the nods", he said at first, before doing a spit take when he was informed it did not.## "What the f—! They got 10 slots, they can't give one to the biggest f—–g movie of, like, the last three years?" He said it was unfathomable, given that the Oscars ratings are dropping. "Like f—–g make a populist choice, f—, man. You got how many slots? Throw in Spider-Man for God's sakes; let him swing in there. F—–g poor kid's always getting crapped on and s—. Show Peter Parker some f—–g love. I'm not even being facetious, with as many movies as they now nominate for Best Picture…."## The 94th annual Academy Awards will be live at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on ABC Sunday, March 27.## Stay tuned...

Tom Cruise's 'Mission Impossible 7' To Be One Of The Costliest Films Ever

Mumbai, February 12 - The covid-19 pandemic is taking a huge toll on Tom Cruise's long-awaited "Mission Impossible 7" movie. The pandemic has not only forced the makers to push the release multiple times but has also pushed the production budget of this high octane actioner to a whole new level. ## Tom Cruise has performed some of the death-defying stunts in "Mission: Impossible 7", and one of such stunts is, actor driving his motorcycle off a cliff in Norway. Director Christopher McQuarrie said during CinemaCon last year that it was the most dangerous thing he has attempted and Cruise admitted saying that he wanted to do such things since his childhood. ## However, to film those stunts have proved costly for Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media, as the budget of the film has skyrocketed to $290 million (according to Variety), which is way more than what the studios had actually planned. The cost includes the substantial tax incentives that the global production was able to leverage to rein in costs. ## The eye-popping budget of the "MI7" has made it one of the costliest films ever. According to Culture Crave, the action spy film is currently the 6th most expensive movie of all time. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is the costliest film ever with a budget of $379 million. ## Avengers "Age of Ultron", "Endgame", and "Infinity War" are the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th most expensive movies with $365 million, $356 million, and $325 million, respectively. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The World's End", and "Justice League" are the 5th most expensive titles with a cost of $300 million each. ## According to Variety sources, a significant factor in this budget escalation is that "Mission: Impossible 7" was initially scheduled to begin shooting in Venice in February 2020, but it had to stop and start production seven different times. ## "Mission: Impossible 7" was supposed to hit screens in September this year, but in January, Paramount announced that it was delaying the release of "Mission: Impossible 7" to July 14, 2023, citing "delays due to the ongoing pandemic". The postponement will also add interest costs to the film's overall budget. Paramount and Skydance also announced that "Mission: Impossible 8" will open on June 28, 2024, instead of its previously announced debut of July 7, 2023.## Stay tuned...

Warner Bros. Lends In Trouble Over 'Matrix Resurrections' Day-and-Date HBO Max Release

Los Angeles, February 8 - Last year, Walt Disney company faced the heat over Scarlett Johansson's "Black Widow's" day-and-date Disney+ release, which reportedly cost Disney a whopping $40 million to settle the lawsuit filed against it. And now, the same is happening with Warner Bros.## Village Roadshow Pictures, the producers of the recently released science fiction action film, "The Matrix Resurrections", has sued Warner Bros. for breaching the contract. The Keanu Reeves-fronted movie was released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously in December last year, which is the reason behind the lawsuit. ## Village Roadshow Pictures has alleged that Warner Bros. is prioritizing HBO Max to increase streamer's popularity at the cost of movies box office revenue. ## "WB's sole purpose in moving the release date of The Matrix Resurrections forward was to create a desperately needed wave of year-end HBO Max premium subscriptions from what it knew would be a blockbuster film, despite knowing full well that it would decimate the film's box office revenue and deprive Village Roadshow of any economic upside that WB and its affiliates would enjoy, especially as compared to a 2022 exclusive theatrical release", states the complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to The Hollywood Reporter. ## Warner Bros. said in a statement, "This is a frivolous attempt by Village Roadshow to avoid their contractual commitment to participate in the arbitration that we commenced against them last week. We have no doubt that this case will be resolved in our favor".## The production company alleged that "The Matrix Resurrections" was supposed to release in 2022, but was moved up by Warner Bros. to boost HBO Max's subscribers. The day-and-date release of The Matrix sequel really put a massive dent in its box office potential as the movie grossed only $37 million domestically. It is also causing huge losses to actors, producers, and other financial partners whose revenue depends on the film's box office numbers. ## Warner Bros. renegotiated contracts tied to box office performance when it announced that it would put its entire slate of 2021 movies onto HBO Max and in theaters. However, according to THR, the lawsuit said no such deal was reached with Village Roadshow over Matrix Resurrections, adding that the rushed release caused it to be rampantly pirated, further hurting its box office returns. ## Stay tuned...

'Moonfall' Director Blams Superhero And Star Wars Films For Ruining The Film Industry

Los Angeles, February 6 - Hollywood filmmaker, Roland Emmerich joins many other actors and filmmakers who believe that the lack of originality in superhero and Star Wars films is ruining the industry. ## The director, whose latest big-budget science fiction disaster film "Moonfall" opened poorly at the box office, has lambasted the state of the movie business because these types (superhero) of movies exist.## While talking about his newest disaster film, he mentions in a conversation with Den of Geek, "Because naturally, Marvel and DC Comics and Star Wars have pretty much taken over. It's ruining our industry a little bit because nobody does anything original anymore".## Emmerich claims to be all about originality and believes that Christopher Nolan is making bold choices when it comes to filmmaking. "You should make bold new movies, you know? And I think, actually, Christopher Nolan is the master of that. He is someone who can make movies about whatever he wants", he said.## Meanwhile, Emmerich's latest venture, "Moonfall", which was shot in Montreal on a $145 million production budget, opened to poor reviews with 40 percent on Rotten tomatoes while its CinemaScore is also weak C+. At the box office, it opened to nearly $3.5 million on Friday, which is poor for a big-budget film. ## Stay tuned...
