Box Office: Don Becomes Sivakarthikeyan's Biggest Grosser Ever

Chennai, May 29 - Tamil summer blockbuster, Don has become the highest-grossing film ever for actor Sivakarthikeyan whose rise over the years has been phenomenal. After scoring his first 100 crores grosser in the form of Doctor in October last year, Siva has done it again, and this time with much more ease. ## Directed by debutante Cibi Chakaravarthi, "Don" has so far grossed approx. 105 crores worldwide through the third Saturday. The coming-of-age romantic comedy breached the 100 crores gross mark in just two weeks which also took it past "Doctor" to become the biggest grosser for Siva. "Doctor" had grossed a little over 100 crores worldwide. ## "Don" is a big hit in the home state Tamil Nadu as it has grossed approx. 67 crores in the state through 3rd Friday. It is among the biggest grosser in Tamil Nadu this year with "Beast", "Valimai", "KGF Chapter 2", and "RRR". In Chennai city, "Don" has managed to collect approx. 7 crores which are fantastic numbers. ## Produced by Lyca Productions and Sivakarthikeyan Productions, "Don" is currently the 4th biggest movie in Tamil this year and it will finish with that spot. The high-octane actioner set the tone for a massive opening weekend with a superstrong $19.3 million in Thursday previews.## Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the sequel to Cruise's 1986's Top Gun, couldn't have bought more joy than taking the flight on the biggest opening day ever of the actor's career. Top Gun 2 grossed an earth-shattering $51.8 million on Friday, including $19.3 million in previews from record number of theaters in North America. ## The Paramount and Skydance pic is on track to score the best Memorial Day openings of all time with a projected three-day domestic haul of $123 million and $150 million for the four days, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is the current record holder with $139 million. ## The opening day collection of Top Gun 2 is almost 80% of Tom Cruise's biggest opening weekend grosser War of the Worlds, which is the biggest opening ever for him with $65 million in 2005. Top Gun 2 will become Cruise's biggest opening weekend grosser. The cinemagoers have bestowed the film with a coveted A+ CinemaScore. ## Internationally, Top Gun 2 collected $24.5 million on Friday, pushing the total international cume to $64.7 million. The U.K. led with $4 million to mark the highest opening day for a Cruise film and also for a live-action Paramount release. Japan followed with $2.6 million. Mumbai, May 28 - The Indian cinema biz went through a lot of challenges due to the covid-19 pandemic since the second quarter of 2020. The massive covid break out forced theaters to shut for nearly 1 and a half years which posed serious questions about theaters' existence. ## However, despite remaining shut for such a long time, the magic of big-screen remains unaffected as after opening their doors to viewers in the second half of 2021, theatres are back to the pre-pandemic level of collections this year. The tentpole titles of this year along with surprise blockbusters helped theaters' revenue to go up to the pre-pandemic level cinema owners are hoping that the momentum will continue throughout this year. ## "Last three months have been good for us. On average, we are clocking more than ₹1000-1500 crore every month", Inox Leisure's chief programming officer, Rajender Singh Jyala, said (via business insider) adding, "Movies RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi pushed the recovery. Before that, Kashmir Files and now with Bhool Bhulaiya 2, our footfalls and domestic ticket sales are at pre-pandemic level or even better".## With such a highly positive trend as far as theater revenue is concerned, 2022 could turn out to be a golden year for the Indian cinema industry as Rajender Singh Jyala is optimistic that the upcoming movies such as Prithviraj, Brahmastra, and Lal Singh Chaddha, among others will set the ball rolling. ## Media consulting firm Ormax Media's Partner, Gautam Jain, said, "The overall domestic box office collections have crossed the ₹4000 crores gross mark from January to April. This is the highest gross box office collection for January to April since 2018. Given this growth trajectory and looking at the line-up of films slated to release this year, a gross box office collection of ₹12,000 crore looks possible, which would make this year the highest ever in terms of the gross box office [collection]". ## While the revenue of theaters has increased significantly, the overall footfalls remain average as compared to the pre-pandemic level. Explaining why the gross box office revenue is higher than 2019 while footfalls continue to be low, Jain said, "The gross box office collections are higher due to the ticket prices being higher by 15-30% across languages. Raaj Kamal Films International, the production house headed by Kamal Haasan, has warned websites against pirating the movie and is on high alert to stop such development. ## The Madras High Court restricted Internet Service Providers (ISP) and over 1000 websites from unauthorized screening or copying of "Vikram", and now, RKFI has communicated to all the Internet Service Providers and sites that stringent legal action would be taken if the movie is copied or transmitted.## Madras High Court judge, Justice Saravanan had, on a petition filed by R. Murali Krishnan of Raaj Kamal Films International, restrained 29 ISPs including BSNL, Vodafone idea, Airtel, and Reliance Jio, and 1308 websites from unauthorized copying or transmission of "Vikram", the complete movie or in parts.## "Vikram" is one of the most awaited movies of 2022 and RKFI is worried that if the movie is copied or reproduced, it would amount to major financial losses. The movie is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by RKFI. The movie also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil in prominent roles while Suriya has played a cameo role. Mumbai, May 27 - Yash Raj Films has agreed to change the title of Akshay Kumar-fronted magnum opus, Prithviraj to Samrat Prithviraj. The decision of changing the title is taken after Karni Sena objected to it and decided to not let the movie screen. ## The producers have reportedly written a letter to the national president, youth president, and the Maharashtra president of the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena on Friday to convey their decision that the film has now been titled Samrat Prithviraj.## It is reported that Karni Sena has no objection to the story of the film and had reportedly given a green signal after watching it. However, they asked Yash Raj Films to change the title of Prithviraj and add 'Samrat' to it, to which YRF has agreed. ## Written and directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, Samrat Prithviraj is based on Prithviraj Raso, a Braj language epic poem about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, a Rajput king from the Chahamana dynasty. Akshay plays the title role while Manushi Chhillar makes her Hindi film debut playing the role of Sanyogita. Israeli Director Rotem Shamir On-board To Helm Afghan Rescue Film 'Garud'

Mumbai, May 27 - Israeli director Rotem Shamir is all set to make his Indian debut with the upcoming Hindi Bollywood film on the Afghan rescue crisis, Garud. Shamir is best known for his hit series Fauda and Hostages. ## Inspired by real events, Garud presents a fictionalized depiction of the rescue mission in Afghanistan, based on the story of an officer in the Garud Commando Force, a special forces unit of the Indian Air Force. Ajay Kapoor, who jointly bankrolled John Abraham's Attack: Part 1, will be producing "Garud" with Subhash Kale. ## Shamir said in a statement, "Garud is a very exciting film, while it is focused on the Indian aspect of the story, it has a universal appeal that promises to connect with people all across. I have been fascinated with the content from the Indian entertainment industry for a long time, hence when Ajay Kapoor brought this film to me, I knew I had to take it.
