Box Office: Sports Biopic '83' Goes Past Rs. 100 Cr. Domestic Net

Mumbai, January 10 - Ranveer Singh-starrer "83" has become the second Bollywood film to reach Rs. 100 crores net at the domestic box office since the last year. The sports biopic netted approx 3.50 crores in the 3rd weekend, pushing its total India net to Rs. 100.50 crores for all languages. ## "83" becomes the 6th film for Ranveer Singh to enter Rs. 100 crores net club. "Padmaavat" remains his highest net earning film of all time with Rs. 302.15 cr., followed by Simmba (Rs. 240.3 cr.), Bajirao Mastani (Rs. 184.3 cr.), Gully Boy (Rs. 139.63 cr.), and Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (Rs. 117.53 cr.). ## At the overseas box office, the Kabir Khan-directed has grossed approx Rs. 59 crores in 17 days, helping its worldwide gross total to reach Rs. 176 crores after the 3rd weekend. It is only the second Bollywood film after Akshay Kumar's "Sooryavanshi" to gross over Rs. 150 crores worldwide since Ajay Devgn's "Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior" in January 2020.## Despite all the aforementioned box office numbers, makers would be feeling that the movie has underperformed at the box office. It was looked like an outright blockbuster, however, the competition with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Allu Arjun's "Pushpa" have reduced its chances to go big in Hindi markets, plus, the restrictions on cinemas have also hit it hard. ## While "83" is finding it difficult to cope up with current circumstances, Allu Arjun's "Pushpa - The Rise" is going wild at the box office in Hindi versions. In fact, this action-thriller is growing day by day, especially on single screens. The dubbed Hindi version of the film netted approx. Rs. 9 crores in its 4th weekend, and its total Hindi collection now strongly stands at Rs. 81.50 crores. ## Directed by Sukumar, the "Pushpa" Hindi version has contributed 35% to the total India gross collection of the film, making it one of the biggest contributions for a dubbed version of a Pan-India film. "Pushpa - The Rise" has already become the first Indian film since "Tanhji" to cross Rs. 300 crores worldwide mark. ## Stay tuned...

5 Direct OTT Bollywood Films Of 2021 That Deserved Theatrical Release

Mumbai, January 9 - The year 2021 was like starting afresh for the Bollywood film industry after facing a massive jolt from the covid-19 pandemic. However, it was another year dominated by the digital platforms as covid continued to strike at the theaters. ## The theatrical releases in 2021 couldn't grab much attention, apart from a couple of films. The lack of quality content kept the audiences away from visiting theaters, which directly benefitted the digital platforms. However, the theatrical scenario could have been completely different had Bollywood shown more confidence in their films that they sent directly to OTT platforms. ## Many believed, including the critics and audiences, that some of the films that succumbed to OTT, would have or could have done wonders at the box office had they been released in theaters. Some of the OTT films got highly positive responses and strong words of mouth that helped them to gain views in millions. The strong words of mouth came in handy during the success of "Sooryavanshi", "Pushpa - The Rise", and "Spider-Man: No Way Home". We have listed out 5 such films in this article. ## 1. Shershaah - Shershaah was a golden opportunity missed by the makers for not making it a theatrical release. Those who watched it on Amazon Prime Video shared their views and regretted not watching it on the big screen. Based on the life of Param Vir Chakra-awardee Captain Vikram Batra, this Sidharth Malhotra-starrer had a missed opportunity to have a special place in the box office history.## ## 2. Mimi - Mimi is possibly the finest film in Kriti Sanon's career. This heartwarming comedy-drama film might not have earned Rs. 100 crores but it had all the elements to become a massive box office hit. Kriti Sanon played a young woman who opts to be a surrogate mother for a foreign couple. The movie was loved by one and all. Just like Allu Arjun's "Pushpa", "Mimi" too could have built upon strong word of mouth had it a theatrical release.## ## 3. Sardar Ka Grandson - Yet another heartwarming comedy-drama film that won the hearts of the viewers for its unique love stroy spanning three-generation. This Arjun Kapoor, Neena Gupta, and Rakul Preet Singh-starrer received mixed-to-positive reviews from the critics and viewers, but its subject could have made it a memorable theatrical experience. ## ## 4. Toofan - The Hindi audiences haven't seen many films on boxing drama, so "Toofan" could have done that for them in theaters. Many believe that post-covid, the movies that will appeal to the masses will work at the box office, and this Farhaan Akhtar-starrer was one such film. It could've worked very well on the emotional front, and solid casting of Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal. ## ## 5. Sardar Udham - Vicky Kaushal's "Uri: The Surgical Strike" was a box officer monster, thanks to its patriotic real story. "Sardar Udham" might not have achieved what "Uri" did, but it could've been another box office success story for Vicky. The biographical historical drama is based on the life of Udham Singh, a freedom fighter from Punjab who assassinated Michael O'Dwyer in London to avenge the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. ## ## Stay tuned...

IANS Sunday Special: The Return Of The Character Actor (Column: B Town) Bollywood

IANS Sunday Special: The Return Of The Character Actor (Column: B Town)

Mumbai, January 9 - The character artistes lent credibility to a film's story, they filled the screen and, what is more, helped break the monotony of the lead pair dominating the screen. All that because these characters were woven into the script. Whatever the draw, popularity, or fan following of a star, he or she alone could not carry a film through.## Some of these artists who propped up a film were versatile, but a lot of the character actors in our earlier films were typecast and chosen when required for a particular character for which they were loved by their audience. In fact, some of these were so popular, roles were written especially to cast them in a film.## Some specialized in negative characters, some as backup comedians (just about every film had a leading comic actor). People never got tired of these actors playing the same role again and again. In fact, that is what was expected of them!## A film's hero could not deliver it all. The character artistes made a film wholesome and held it together. There were some great character actors such as Balraj Sahni, Jayant, Iftekhar, Rehman, Sapru, Kanhaiyalal, and Jeevan, whose very names in the credit titles added to a film's value.## Balraj Sahni and Jayant enjoyed a towering personalities besides being great talents. Iftikhar, while also doing varied roles, made a strong presence playing a no-nonsense top cop. Sapru was gifted with a royal presence and fitted all roles of a 'khandani' wealthy man. Om Prakash was in a class of his own. Kanhaiyalal and Jeevan were both scheming, deceptive manipulators each in their own inimitable style.## And, then there was Jagdish Raj, who was typecast throughout his acting career to play a police inspector, so much so he acted a cop in as many as 144 movies and this has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.## Can you imagine Manoj Kumar's 'Shaheed' or, later, 'Upkar' without Pran, or Irrfan's 'Hindi Medium' without Deepak Dobriyal, or 'Chupke Chupke' without Om Prakash? There are many such films. Comic characters have been a part of our myths and stories of great kingdoms among other tales. Narad in our myths is the ultimate example. The film stories continued this tradition.## Be it a family drama, a thriller, or an action movie, a comedian in the cast was a must and his/her appearance on the screen was looked forward to like clowns in a circus. It is no wonder that some comic actors such as Rajendra Nath, Johnny Walker, Mehmood, and Deven Verma went on to become legends.## They were a must in a film's cast and often a script was altered to accommodate a comedian. A comedian was a stress reliever and, what they called, relief!## There came a time when Mehmood was the draw for a film and not the film's hero! Legend has it that he was paid more than a film's lead actor! Mehmood's success never went to his head, but it started eating into others' heads. Stars nursed bigger egos than their success could afford them. Despite knowing that Mehmood was a factor in the success of their films, they did not want him in their films anymore.## The other cause of the fall of many character actors was their ambition to make their own films. Mehmood managed it quite well for a time. but others, such as Deven Verma, Asrani, Mohan Choti, from among the few sought-after in those days, took to making their own films only to play the lead role and, in the process, stopped getting assignments from other makers.## Johnny Lever was a highly sought-after comic star, the best since Mehmood. His name in the cast brought people to cinema theatres. Filmmakers are prospect hunters. One well-known producer got this bright idea to cast Johnny in the lead and print some quick money!## Tempting though it would have sounded initially, Johnny sat over the offer for two months and decided he was better off doing what he was doing, playing a comic sidekick, and continuing to make the Rs 15-20 lakh (considered very high in those days) he was making per film, instead of falling for a lead role and losing it all.## Then followed an era when the character artists were out of favor almost totally. There were no writers who could pen a script involving many characters. No writer to script a near-three-hour film. On their part, the lead actors started doing it all. The hero filled in for all, negative, comic, buffoon, whatever.## Amitabh Bachchan's films accommodated many character actors but there came a time when just about every other character was woven into his and the films suffered. The same happened with other film heroes till Hindi filmmakers started remaking South Indian hits.## South Indian films and their remakes filled the screen with dozens of actors. Half-a-dozen comic villains such as Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Ranjeet, Tej Sapru, Asrani, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Amjad Khan, Anupam Kher, and so on.## Then came a phase when the lead heroes of yore staged a retune in character roles. Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Dharmendra, and then Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff were some.## But now, real character actors have staged a comeback. Not through the big bill commercial potboilers, but through small films by makers who chose closer-to-life stories. The films told stories a viewer could relate to. Their films, as a rule, were low- or moderate-budget productions, such as 'Fukrey', 'Vicky Donor', 'Piku', 'Kahaani', 'English Vinglish', 'Paan Singh Tomar'.## There are some character artists who have carved a niche for themselves. Certain films are identified with them, rather than the other way round!## There are actors such as Pankaj Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra, Imraan, Rajesh Sharma, Deepak Dobriyal, Nawazudddin Siddiqui, Pitobash Tripathy, Atul Kulkarni, Manish Chaudhary, Ranveer Shorey, Brijendra Kala, Adil Hussain, Pawan Malhotra, Ali Fazal, Jimmy Shergill, Vipin Sharma, Annu Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Yashpal Sharma, Kay Kay Menon, Manoj Joshi, Ashutosh Rana, Arshad Warsi, Ronit Roy, Varun Sharma. The list can go on.## Sadly, most of these talents do not get their due in mainstream cinema. The story is the same. Our writers don't think of creating characters, besides the hero and villain (the heroine being mandatory). But, now, the popularity of some of the actors on OTT is compelling filmmakers to cast them.## Take for example, Pratik Gandhi. An unknown stage actor till the other day, he is now doing about half-a-dozen films. Imagine, Pankaj Tripathi is now seen in as many, if not more, television commercials as any top hero!## Stay tuned...

Bollywood Box Office Report: 2021 Bollywood

Bollywood Box Office Report: 2021

Mumbai, Jan 7, 2022: The cinemas remained shut for most of 2021 due to Covid 19 but things were back to normal with the release of Sooryavanshi on Diwali 2021. There was a total of 73 films released in 2021 and 32 of them were theatrical releases. Those 32 films have contributed around 550cr collections at the box office which is a fair result as there is something in the bag rather than nothing. These 32 films also include the dubbed version of Allu Arjun starrer Pushpa: The Rise. ## The Biggest plus of the year was the business of Sooryavanshi and dubbed version collections of Pushpa. Released on Diwali, The Akshay Kumar fronted Sooryavanshi was the first film that brought back the audience to the theatres in a big way if we ignore the dubbed version of Pushpa which is a non-Hindi film. With collections of around 196cr - Sooryavanshi has become the Biggest Grosser of the Hindi film industry. ## After Sooryavanshi, the only other film which did decent business was Salman Khan and Ayush Sharma starrer Antim: The Final Truth with collections of around 40 Cr. After this, there was a Tadap that had done okayish business with 26cr collections. Tadap was the launch of Suniel Shetty Son Ahan Shetty and according to that, the business is decent. ## The Biggest disappointments of the year were the rejection of big films like Satyamev Jayate2, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, and 83. While John Abraham starrer Satyamev Jayate2 was expected to put big box office figures as the first part was a huge hit, Ayushman Khurrana's Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui was expected to draw a premium multiplex audience due to its premise but both the films have failed to live onto the expectations. The big Xmas event film of the year starring Ranveer Singh - "83" was expected to challenge the numbers of Sooryavanshi but the film has failed to do that with just 95cr collections till now and nothing is coming from the theatres now as the cinemas across many states got shut. ## There were some Hindi films which released in February and March like Mumbai Saga And Roohi. Roohi had collected around 22crs at the box office while Mumbai Saga did 17cr approx business. ## The Top 5 Highest Hindi Net Grossers Of The Year ## 1. Sooryavanshi: 195.55 Cr ## 2. 83: 95 Cr (running) ## 3. Pushpa(Hindi): 70 Cr (running) ## 4. Antim: 39.57 Cr ## 5. Bell Bottom - 33.31 Cr ## Stay tuned.

Aanand L. Rai: 'Zero' Was Not A Failure But A Lesson Learnt

Mumbai, Jan 4 (IANS) Filmmaker Aanand L. Rai is known for collaborating with several superstars be it Dhanush, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, or Anushka Sharma while he kept experimenting with his storytelling instead of following any formula of commercial Bollywood films.## In conversation with IANS, Aanand shares why he opts for conviction in storytelling as opposed to formula and why a film like 'Zero' with one of the biggest superstars of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan - was actually not a failure but learning for him.## Asked how he plans his casting of bringing superstars on board for his projects and Aanand told IANS: "Well, firstly, by not looking at them as a superstar but the talented actors that they are...you see the moment I would start thinking about casting from a commercial point of view as in, let's bring Dhanush from the south (Indian film industry) and Akshay sir from Hindi so that when the film is released, both their fans will gather in the theatre to watch a film, I might compromise on a story.## "It is my good luck that Dhanush and Akshay sir, both are superstars; but before anything else, they are good actors and perfect for the characters they played on-screen. It was the same process for every film that I have done. Perhaps that is why my films are more to do with how interesting and experimental the story is, rather than the box-office success. The business of a film cannot be predicted but what I can offer is an original story. That is all I am trying to do".## However, it is not wrong to assume that when a superstar and a successful filmmaker like Aanand come together for a project, the success of the film is expected. But that was not really the result with the film 'Zero' that featured Shah Rukh, Katrina, and Anushka.## Does the pressure of delivering a successful film increase when superstars are on board?## Aanand explained, "I want to put my thoughts on the table on this topic. Look, having an expectation from the audience is one thing and how I, as a director of the film is dealing with it, is another. I think if I am not ready to deal with that extra pressure, then I should have not signed up for a huge project like that.## "Yes, I was working with one of the biggest superstars of our country, Shah Rukh. Making the film itself was an experience and I am proud of the fact that it was one of the original films, an original story. Yes, I took the pressure of Khan's stardom that I shouldn't have. But 'Zero' is not a failure but learning for me. I knew how to take off, I didn't know how to land!"## His next directorial work is 'Raksha Bandhan' starring Akshay Kumar. The shooting of the film has been completed.## Stay tuned...

Covid-19 Surge Has Spoilt The Party For The Resurgent Box-Office

New Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) With the shadow of a third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic lengthening, the Indian film fraternity is taking measured steps to deal with the looming threat of disruption of business.## Production houses have already started pushing back the releases of upcoming films.## The first to feel the heat was the Shahid Kapoor-led cricket drama 'Jersey'. It was followed by the postponement of the period epic, S.S. Rajamouli's 'RRR', and then came to the news on Tuesday that the Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Prithviraj', which stoked a political controversy even before its release, has also been put on the backburner.## In a conversation with IANS, trade analyst Karan Taurani of Elara Capital said: "Producers of big-budget films will be averse to taking risks in the present situation".## With Delhi shutting down cinema theatres and multiplexes, Haryana following suit in five districts up till January 12, and Tamil Nadu and West Bengal imposing a 50 percent occupancy limit (like Maharashtra before them), the box-office, which was in a state of euphoria after the successes of 'Pushpa: The Rise', 'Sooryavanshi' and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', has slipped back into a state of semi-paralysis.## Taurani says he doesn't see a major film release happening anytime soon. "They are all postponing," he said. "For the next three months, I see no releases being announced. I believe normality will return only after April".## The postponement of films will have a domino effect on the theatrical calendar of 2022, independent film trade analyst Sumit Kadel said. "For instance, the postponement of 'Prithviraj' will impact other releases of Yash Raj Films, such as 'Shamshera' and 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar'".## The third wave, according to Kadel, will last till February-March, which in turn will result in the postponement of more films. "The entire calendar will have to be reshuffled for sure," Kadel added.## Taurani expects the big-budget films to suffer because their interest cost goes up with each delayed-release. "They might have to come again to the exhibitors to ask for a higher distributor's share or make some other arrangements," Taurani pointed out.## But he ended on a note of hope. "It won't be as bad as it was during the second wave," he said. It's a hope that is being nurtured by everyone associated with the cinema business across the country.## Stay tuned...

15-City US Promo Tour of Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Kashmir Files' Concludes

New Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) A 15-city promotional tour across the United States for Vivek Agnihotri's upcoming movie 'The Kashmir Files' has concluded. The film shows the systematic violence unleashed against Kashmiri Hindus and their subsequent displacement in 1990.## The Global Kashmiri Pandit Diaspora (GKPD) has been at the forefront of making the world aware of the trauma faced by the Kashmiri Hindu community and the intergenerational effects of the genocide.## The broad outline of the movie was conceptualized by GKPD in association with the I Am Buddha Foundation in early 2018. This culminated in a two-year 'research tour' undertaken by Vivek Agnihotri, director, and Pallavi Joshi, producer, whereby they traveled widely across India, the US, the UK, and Singapore to hear first-hand accounts of the brutalities faced by the community from the survivors. These stories form the backdrop of this well-researched movie.## The movie also aims to increase awareness among the international communities about the scourge of terrorism and the need for it to be uprooted globally so that peace and humanity can flourish. It depicts the humanitarian angle of the challenges that global terrorism brings to communities and the suffering it causes.## To kick-start, the worldwide release of the movie, a US-wide promotional tour -- 'The Right to Justice Tour' -- was organized by GKPD in collaboration with its various partners in the US representing several sections of the Indian community from November 26 to December 30, 2021.## During this period, screenings were held in 15 US cities -- Long Island NY, Edison NJ, Washington DC, Tampa, Atlanta, Boston, Raleigh, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Austin, and Houston.## All the exclusive screenings were held at premier theatres across the US and were sold out within hours of the events being made public. An invited audience of American politicians, lawmakers, media personalities, noted members of the Indo-American, Jewish, and other communities attended in wide numbers.## Hundreds of audience members took to social media and local press after the viewing to express their gratitude to Agnihotri and his team for finally bringing out the honest trust about the genocide, which has hitherto remained hidden from the masses.## Acclaimed actor Mithun Chakraborty, who has a lead role in the movie, attended the Long Island screening and spoke very poignantly about his experience during the filming. Other noted actors, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Puneet Issar, and Darshan Kumaar, are part of the star-studded cast.## On the sidelines of the screenings, various impact events were held at prestigious venues across the US, notably the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, Capitol Hill, Harvard Club Boston, University of Massachusetts, University of Denver, Georgia Tech, and the Meca Center Houston.## GKPD in partnership with US-India Security Council convened a congressional reception at Capitol Hill on December 2 where Congressman Andy Barr emphasized the contribution of Indo-Americans.## Noted Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnammorthi said that "the Kashmiri pandit community is one of the most successful Indian-American communities and the challenges they had faced and overcome in the past make all challenges pale in comparison".## In his keynote speech, Agnihotri said, "The first principle of humanity and oneness comes from Kashmir".## During the tour, Governor of the state of Rhode Island, Daniel J McKee, presented a certificate of special recognition to Agnihotri and Pallavi Joshi. The state Senate of Massachusetts also formally congratulated Agnihotri for his contribution to the Indian film industry.## The grand finale of the roadshow was held in Houston on December 30. A massive car rally was organized and the visiting guests were driven in a motor cavalcade to the screening theatre. More than 400 people, including lawmakers, community leaders, and members of think tanks, attended the screening.## At the screening, Surinder Kaul, chief organizer of the tour and GKPD co-founder, thanked the visiting guests for making this very impactful movie and their extraordinary commitment to bringing the truth out.## 'The Kashmir Files' is due for worldwide release soon.## Stay tuned...
