Suriya To Team Up With Director Shankar For Big Screen Adaptation of Velpari Novel

Chennai, September 21 - Tamil superstar Suriya will reportedly be teaming with maverick filmmaker S. Shankar for the cinematic adaptation of the iconic Velpari Novel. ## Shankar is currently working on Kamal Haasan's "Indian 2" along with Ram Charan's "RC15" simultaneously. After completing his current commitments, Shankar will start working on Suriya's film. ## According to Pinkvilla, "Suriya's 2D Entertainment has acquired the rights to bring the story of Velpari to the big screen". It is said that Suriya and Shanker have already met multiple times to discuss the way forward regarding bringing Velpari's novel to the big screen. ## "The idea to adapt one of the greatest novels of all time and make it a cinematic experience like never before", says the report. ## Suriya's 2D Entertain will produce this mega-budget film while he will also play the lead role. It will be a big Pan-Indian film with actors from across industries coming on board to play key characters. 'RRR' US Distributor Variance Films To Run Best Picture Oscar Campaign For The Movie

Mumbai, September 20 - The Film Federation of India has picked the acclaimed Gujarati film Chhello Show (Last Film Show) for India's official entry for Oscars 2023. ## The news about India's official Oscar entry has left many movie fans in India disappointed as they were hoping that SS Rajamouli's globally appreciated film RRR would get the nod from the Indian jury. The movie, however, can still get an Oscar nomination in the general category, and the USA distributor of the film, Variance Films will be running a campaign for the same. ## Variance Films president Dylan Marchetti said that "RRR" will receive a significant Best Picture campaign, but he also saw the potential for Best Original Song ("Naatu Naatu"), in addition to cinematography, production design, editing, and many other categories. ## The hashtag "#RRRforOscars" has been trending on Twitter for the past week here in India. "The only thing this news changes is one less award we can go after (Best International Film)", Marchetti said, a few hours after the Indian decision was announced (via Indiewire). "There's a dozen-plus other we can go for now. This film is the whole package".## "RRR" continues to play at theaters in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, with additional cities booked through the end of the year in the USA. "I don't think 'RRR' is the best movie from India this year", Marchetti said. "It's the best movie in the world this year. We're going to conduct ourselves accordingly".## Variance Films may be willing to run an Oscar campaign for the movie but it will require a significant and time-intensive push to keep the movie at the forefront of conversations for these categories as the season heats up. Critically Acclaimed Gujarati Movie 'Chhello Show' Selected As India's Official Oscar Entry

Mumbai, September 20 - India has picked Gujarati-language coming-of-age drama film Chhello Show (Last Film Show) as India's official entry to the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards. ## Directed by Pan Nalin, the movie follows a nine-years-old Samay from Chalala, a village in Saurashtra in the Gujarat state of India, who entered a cinema hall projection booth by bribing Fazal, a cinema projector technician, and watched several films through summer. He became engrossed with cinema for life. ## The movie received massive critical acclaim. Indiewire's David Ehrlich called the movie a "coming-of-age story" with "an ethereal take on the magic of movies". Prahlad Srihari of Firstpost called the film "an ode to movie-going, as movie-making" while Tanzeem Pardiwalla of Mashable India rated it 5 out of 5. She praised the direction, cinematography, theme, story, and performances.## "Chhello Show" won the Golden Spike for Best Film at the 66th Valladolid Film Festival (Seminci) held in October 2021. It was nominated for the Tiantan Awards at the 11th Beijing International Film Festival. It premiered in the Spotlight section of the 20th Tribeca Film Festival on 10 June 2021 and became the first Gujarati film selected for the festival section. ## Meanwhile, the two films that were being speculated to be India's entry for the category were "The Kashmir Files" and "RRR", with the latter gaining the most traction in the West. Los Angeles, September 20 - The Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron revealed in a recent interview that he had to disagree with 20th Century Fox Studio to keep his all-time biggest blockbuster Avatar 162 minutes long. ## The filmmaker, in an interview with New York Times, revealed that 20th Century Fox Studio wanted him to trim the movie's flying sequences to keep it shorter. Cameron, however, obviously rejected the studio's notes by telling executives that he directed "Titanic" and thus paid for a large portion of the 20th Century Fox studio lot.## "I think I felt, at the time, that we clashed over certain things", Cameron said to NYT (via Variety). "For example, the studio felt that the film should be shorter and that there was too much flying around on the ikran — what the humans call the banshees. ## "Well, it turns out that's what the audience loved the most, in terms of our exit polling and data gathering. And that's a place where I just drew a line in the sand and said, 'You know what? I made 'Titanic'. This building that we're meeting in right now, this new half-billion dollar complex on your lot? MAI President Says Over 4000 Screens Will Participate In India's First Ever National Cinema Day

Mumbai, September 19 - The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) is expecting massive footfalls on India's first-ever National Cinema Day, scheduled this Friday, September 23. The association said that over 4000 screens - multiplex and single, across India will participate in NCD. ## An initiative of the MIA, the National Cinema Day will give the opportunity to the patrons to pay just Rs 75 per ticket and walk into any cinema of their choice to watch the movie along with other "special surprises" lined up for them. ## MAI President Kamal Gianchandani, who is also the CEO of PVR Pictures Ltd, said that participating cinema chains/screens include PVR, INOX, Cinepolis, Carnival, Miraj, City Pride, Asian, Mukta A2, Movietime, Wave, M2K, Delite, and even some single-screen operators, all over India.## "On average, there are 400 seats per auditorium, which makes around four million seats available in the country for filmgoers. From this, nearly 16,000 seats shall participate in the NCD", Gianchandani told IANS.## Along with the new films releasing on the day, some of the major films likely to be exhibited during the NCD, include KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, Vikram, Bhool Bhulaiya 2, or Hollywood big films like Doctor Strange, and Top Gun: Maverick. These are some of the globally appreciated films both critically and commercially and movie lovers can enjoy them on the big screen again on Sep. 23.## "The multiplexes may also make their own special offers, for people of all age groups, exclusions to welcome the people to the cinemas that day, but we can't reveal the details now", said Gianchandani.## He said that the NCD is intended to be a Thank You to the filmgoers who made it happen by returning to the cinemas after the two years of Coronavirus Pandemic closure, and a warm invitation to those who have still not made it to the local neighborhood movie-halls yet.## Gianchandani said the first quarter of the current fiscal notched up an impressive recovery for cinema operators in India after the covid-19 pandemic, and the NCD - which shall become an annual feature - will be a step forward in the direction.## Stay tuned...
