Box Office: 'Empuraan' Notched Up Biggest Indian Film Opening Weekend of 2025; Tops 200 Crore Worldwide

Kochi, March 31 - Superstar Mohanlal's Malayalam action thriller L2: Empuraan has stormed the box office to score the biggest extended 4-day opening weekend for an Indian movie of 2025 and the biggest ever for a Malayalam title by a huge margin. ## Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, Empuraan scored approximately 176 crores gross collections globally and became the third highest-grossing Mollywood film of all-time during its 4-day weekend. Chhaava had grossed approximately 165 crores worldwide in the traditional 3-day weekend. ## During its opening weekend, the Mollywood blockbuster grossed over 100 crores at the overseas box office, which made it the first ever Malayalam film to do so. Mohanlal's 'Empuraan' Re-Censored After Facing Backlash

Kochi, March 30 - Superstar Mohanlal's action thriller is doing excellent business in the home state, Kerala and at the overseas box office and is already one of the biggest Malayalam grossers of all time. However, the movie has come under fire amid its box office dominance for allegedly displaying an anti-Hindu agenda. ## According to the latest reports, the producers have decided to re-edit and re-censor the film after massive backlash and protests. Kochi, March 22 - Superstar Mohanlal's highly-anticipated Malayalam action thriller L2: Empuraan has shattered a massive record in advance booking, beating the biggies of Bollywood and Tollywood industries. ## Empuraan is witnessing an unprecedented demand for tickets across Kerala state and this led to the record-breaking response on the first day itself. Kochi, March 7 - One of the biggest Malayalam films ever, superstar Mohanlal's action thriller L2: Empuraan is all set to hit the big screen on March 27 in multiple languages. Unni Mukundan's 'Marco' TV Premiere Gets Halt By CBFC; A Right Decision?

Kochi, March 5 - Malayalam star Unni Mukundan's box office blockbuster Marco has reportedly been halted for the television premiere and is also likely to be stopped from OTT release due to the violent content. The movie is directed by Haneef Adeni. ## Touted as the most violent film, Marco was censored with an A rating (18+) for the big screen release by The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) but the body has denied the permission to screen the movie on television. CBFC has also reportedly asked the government to ban the movie from streaming on OTT platforms.## It is to be noted that to premiere the film on television, it has to obtain a U/A or U certificate from the board. In the case of Marco, the central board accepted the recommendation of the regional examination committee and based on that, it was found that the movie contained too much violence to be changed to a U/A or U-category film. ## If the makers want, they can re-submit for permission by cutting more scenes but they are unlikely to do so as it will make the film irrelevant. It is probably the first movie in recent times to get banned from TV premiere and the decision is not surprising given the scrutiny CBFC has been under recently.## Marco, despite its huge box office success with a 100+ crore gross collection, has faced criticism for showing too much violence, and so has the CBFC for allowing its release in theatres. Meanwhile, the producer of the film has said that he will not make films like Marco in future, though their intention was not to promote violence. Kochi, February 8 - Malayalam megastar Mammootty's highly-awaited action thriller film Bazooka has officially been postponed from Valentine's Day release. Kochi, January 12 - Unni Mukundan's action thriller Marco is in the last leg of its box office run but running out of time, it has done what no other A-rated Malayalam film did in the past as it has become the first adult-rated Mollywood title to to 100 crores at the worldwide box office. ## Touted as India's most violent film, Marco was released on December 20, ahead of the Christmas weekend in 2024. Box Office: 'Marco' Emerges Career-Biggest Grosser For Unni Mukundan

Kochi, December 29 - Malayalam cinema strikes again as A-rated action thriller Marco, touted as the most violent film in Indian cinema, has emerged as a big success and is heading towards 100 crores gross mark at the worldwide box office. ## Through the second Saturday (9th day), the film grossed approximately 63 crores, including 37.50 crores domestically and around 25+ crores at the overseas box office.
