Rajinikanth's 'Annaatthe' Bags Second Biggest Opening Weekend After Thalapathy's 'Master' Of Pandemic Era

Chennai, November 8 - Superstar Rajinikanth strikes gold with his latest Tamil action drama film, "Annaatthe". The veteran actor, at the age of 70, proved his commercial worth and scored the century as the box office. Directed by Siva, "Annaatthe", which was released on November 4, scored ₹ 123.4 crores in the 4-day opening weekend at the worldwide box office, including ₹ 96.4 cr. in India alone. ## "Annaatthe" currently is the second biggest opening weekend grosser Indian film during the covid-19 pandemic. Thalapathy Vijay's Tamil blockbuster "Master", which was released on 13 January this year, recorded ₹ 143.90 in the 5-day opening weekend. Akshay Kumar's "Sooryavanshi" is going neck to neck with "Annaatthe" and collects ₹ 116 crores in the 3-day weekend, beginning on Friday (Nov. 5). ## The Sun Pictures' production, "Annaatthe" has earned ₹ 79.20 crores gross in Tamil Nadu alone, followed by ₹ 8 crores in Karanataka, ₹ 5.60 crores in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, ₹ 2 in Kerala, and ₹ 1.60 crores for the rest of India. Overseas, it has grossed ₹ 27 crores so far from the release of over 1100 screens in 66 countries. ## "Annaatthe" took the 3rd best opening of the pandemic era at the Indian box office. Pawan Kalyan's Telugu hit, "Vakeel Saab" earned ₹ 40.10 crores net and is at the top spot, followed by Vijay's "Master", which earned ₹ 34.80 crores on the first day on the occasion of the Pongal festival. "Sooryavanshi" is the 4th biggest opener with ₹ 26.29 crores. ## "Annaatthe" revolves around the relationship of Kaalaiyan (played by Rajinikanth), a village president who only bows to goodness and moral fairness, and his sibling Thanga Meenaatchi (played by Keerthy Suresh). And this is all because of Sivakarthikeyan's action-comedy, "Doctor", which is ruling the box office since its debut on October 9. Earlier, the movie was supposed to release directly on OTT, but at the elevanth hour, makers changed their mind and what a turnaround this has been since then. ## Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, "Doctor" has already been decalred an all-time blockbuster and now, it has entered the Rs. 100 crore club worldwide. On Tuesday (Nov. 2), makers announced that their film has officially broke into Rs. 100 crore league, which is the first 100 crore film for Sivakarthikeyan.## Doctor revived the theatrical business and is the first blockbuster after the second wave of the pandemic. The movie crossed the 100 crore mark on its 25th day, which includes Rs. 80.10 crores in India alone including both Tamil and Telugu versions. Chennai, November 2 - Superstar Rajinikanth's Tamil movie "Annaatthe" is all charged up to set the box office on fire. The action drama film, directed by Siva, is tracing to earn in the range of Rs. 60-65 crores worldwide gross on an opening day. The advance booking at all the centers is close to 90%, which is excellent. It will also be released in Telugu as Peddhana. ## Meanwhile, "Annaatthe" will have the widest ever Overseas release for a Tamil film. It will be released in over 1100+ theaters outside India with the USA being the leader with 570+ theaters. Chennai, November 2 - Maharshi director, Vamshi Paidipally will be directing Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay for the first time in his next film. Tentatively titled "Thalapathy 66", the film will be produced by Dil Raju under his banner Sri Venkateswara Creations. ## Since the film announcement on September 26, there hasn't been much development on the rest of the cast and other details. However, in a recent media interaction, director Vamshi gave major updates about the cast and story of the film. He revealed that the upcoming film will be high on emotions with a touch of Thalapathy's stardom. ## "My core strength is human relationships and emotions so, the film with Vijay sir will also have these two factors. I also penned the script keeping the stardom and the fanbase of Vijay sir in mind", said Vamshi.## There have been reports stating that some of the noted actors and a top-notch technical team will be associated with the project. Since there has been no official confirmation yet, Vamshi said that the updates regarding the same will be out from December before the regular shoot begins. ## "All the updates will be out from December. Chennai, October 23 - Tamil movie "Koozhangal" (also known as Pebbles internationally) will be competing with other international films in the Oscars 2022 for the Best International Film category. ## Produced by Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan under their banner, Rowdy Pictures, "Koozhangal" beaten 13 other films including Vidya Balan starrer "Sherni" and Vicky Kaushal's "Sardar Udham" to be selected for India's official entry in the world's most coveted awards by the 15-member jury. ## Directed by debutant PS Vinothraj, "Koozhangal" was screened at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam held in the Netherlands on 4 February 2021, where it received the Tiger Award at the festival. The film is based on the real-life incident that happened in director Vinothraj's family. ## The film explores the relationship between a young boy and his alcoholic father. The son follows his father to bring back his mother, who goes to her parent's house due to abuse. It shows how the father-son duo win back her trust. Chennai, October 22 - Yogi Babu's acclaimed political satire comedy-drama film "Mandela" is among the 14 films shortlisted for India's entry to the Academy Awards 2022. Yogi Babu, who has become a popular name in Tamil cinema, won praise for his role in the film, which is set on the backdrop of a village panchayat election scenario between two political parties where a local barber's vote will determine the fate of the election. ## Apart from Mandela, Vidya Balan starrer "Sherni" has also been named on the list. In the film, directed by Amit V. Masurkar, Vidya plays an upright forest officer battling social barriers set by the patriarchal society and lackadaisical attitudes within her department. The movie was released directly on Amazon Prime Video and was one of the top-rated films on the streamer. ## Vicky Kaushal's recently released biographical historical drama, Sardar Udham, will also be battling out to become India's official entry in next year's Oscars. The direct-to-digital release is based on the life of Udham Singh, a revolutionary freedom fighter known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer in London to avenge the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Sardar Udham is one of the highest-rated Indian films of 2021 on IMDb. ## Among the 14 films, Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan, and Kunchacko Boban's Malayalam film, Nayattu, has also made the cut on the list. Directed by Martin Prakkat, the movie received critical attention at the time for its tightly packed script and great performances of the actors, though there has been some criticism of its take on caste. ## The 14 selected films from across industries have reached the jury in Kolkata which contains 15 members. Filmmaker Shaji N Karun is the Chairman of the jury who will select India's final entry to the Academy Awards for the category Best International Film category. Chennai, October 17 - What a turnaround this for Sivakarthikeyan's Tamil movie Doctor. At one stage, the movie almost succumbed to the OTT illusion, but now it is going all guns blazing at the box office. The comedy-actioner, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, has been declared one of the biggest blockbusters of 2021, and the reason behind it is the unpreceded response from the audience. ## Produced by Sivakarthikeyan Productions, and KJR Studios, "Doctor" has become the highest grosser Indian film after the second covid-19 wave with INR 63.4 crores worldwide. It has surpassed the Telugu movie "Love Story" starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, which earned 61 crores* worldwide in the first three weeks while Akshay Kumar starrer "Bell Bottom" is at number 3 with Rs. 53.70 crores worldwide. ## "Doctor" was released on October 9 and it has earned Rs. 43.9 crores so far in Tamil Nadu state including Rs. 7.71 crores from Chennai alone. It was also released in dubbed Telugu version as Varun Doctor and it turned out to be a profitable venture for Telugu distributors with Rs. 2.09 crores so far. Thala 61: Producer Boney Kapoor Confirms His Next Is Also With Ajith Kumar And H Vinoth

Chennai, September 29 - It has been some kind of craze that Ajith Kumar's upcoming film "Valimai" kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the year. Thala Ajith, who is not on social media, proved that one need not be on social media to have a loyal fanbase as he has. ## Directed by H Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor, "Valimai" has been a talk of the town ever since it was announced. The movie is now set to release in theaters on Pongal 2022. Even before the release date was announced, there have been reports that the trending trio would be reuniting for their next film. Well, it has now been confirmed by the producer himself, who left mighty impressed with Vinoth. ## In a recent interview with The Hindu, Boney Kapoor asked about what impressed him about H Vinoth, who is still new in the industry. While speaking about the director, he also confirmed his next with him and Ajith Kumar. ## "His work will talk. He believes in expressing himself through his films. It was Ajith who sent Vinoth to my Mumbai residence to narrate some film ideas a few years back. I remember my wife [the late actor Sridevi] conversing with him in Tamil, and being impressed with his storylines. His vision was clear, and ours has been a happy journey. In fact, my next film will also be with Ajith and Vinoth. ## It is not to anyone that Thala Ajith is one of the biggest stars in Tamil cinema and fans stand in a queue to watch his films in theaters. Boney Kapoor, who himself is a big fan of Ajith, had flown to Chennai to watch Thala Ajith's Viswasam (2019), and he was blown away by the response fans gave to the movie. ## "I have never seen or experienced something like that before. There were thousands of people waiting outside the theatre well past midnight, to try to watch the first show. When I walked out after the film ended, there were thousands waiting for the next show", the producer said. ## Meanwhile, the shooting of Thala Ajith's next, tentatively titled Thala 61, is expected to begin in November this year. His first collaboration with Vijay is said to be a Tamil - Telugu bilingual movie.## Meanwhile, Thalapathy is currently busy shooting for his next, titled "Beast".
